You can rightly say all you want about Rolex. Of course, AP, VC, PP, AL&S are orders of magnitude better. But you can't deny that the Submariner is still a beautiful and timeless watch. Sure, it's "common" nowadays, but it's pretty much perfect. If I had an AL&S, I would spend hours drooling over it with a microscope but for every day use and not detailed inspection, the Submariner is perfect.

all those brands are orders of magnitude better on all fronts except for rigidity, and that's one big fat massive thing to overlook. those pieces will require (very expensive) servicing every 2-5 years and might be away for up to a year or more (patek is notorious for this) while the rolex can easily go even 15 years without service... and many have gone even longer. but of course if you've got an ap, vc, pp, als, then service costs aren't of much concern, and you've probably got a roster of watches to go through while that one's at the shop. but still, the rolexes just feel so much more solid, ARE so much more solid... rigid, harder wearing.

The brand printed on the dial thing was very much dependent on geography. This video takes the British(and her empire at the time) angle on things in the early days of the man's wristwatch. In Britain it was the retailer's name that sold the watch and as such in that market the Swiss supplied non-branded dials where retailers could add their own name later. It was such a trend that Longines as a selling point even circulated a letter in 1915 to British jewellers stating they wouldn't put their name anywhere on the watches they supplied. _However_ beyond Britain and her empire this was not the case. Most obviously in America where US brands most certainly had their names front and centre. Even Tiffany would be added to the existing brand name. Mainland Europe was similar. EG an Omega or Longines supplied to say Italy would have their name on the dial, whereas one supplied to the UK wouldn't. This localisation even translated to movement finishing. British buyers were used to gilt movements on their own home produced timepieces so the Swiss obliged by mostly selling them gilt movements. Continental sold movements were more likely to have geneva stripes. Plus Swiss brands simply didn't have the market recognition back then, compared to a retailer like Harrods. Rolex at the start and for much of the 20th century was almost exclusively a brand of Britain and her empire, later commonwealth and largely unknown outside it. Try finding a Rolex advert in a US magazone of the 40's and 50's. What Wilsdorf did was look to branding beyond those shores and started to insist that his watches carry the Rolex brand(among others. He had a few in the stable back then. Tudor was the only one to survive). His insistence gradually meant the retailer name disappeared from dials and all the other Swiss brands followed his lead. As a company Rolex are one of the least innovative of the Swiss brands, save for in two areas; marketing and spotting trends before they became widespread. Wilsdorf was a true giant and unalloyed genius in that respect. Oh and if anyone is thinking of buying an early wrist watch/tranch watch. If it says Rolex on the dial and is pre 1920 and originally sold in the UK, chances are extremely high that it's a later addition to get a better price.

Nice write up! The slow start in the US market resulted from an agreement that Aegler would supply movements for Gruen's Guild A watches in North America, and to Wilsdorf for his Rolex brand in the rest of the world. I think this arrangement was vacated in the late 30's.

  • @MrGrentch

@@nigelbarker8726 I did not know that Nigel. :) Nice info right there. That would certainly explain their lack of market visibility in the pre war years. They did try to make headway after the war with promotions like giving Rolex watches to US presidents, but it didn't really take off. They only gained ground in the US market in the 1960's and really took off during the 1970's onward with a lot of promotion in US magazines and the like. This also meant that the US market never had the "Rolex is a bit used car salesman tacky" brand image over there.

I just hope Rolex can back to his initial position, a great precise mechanic tool watch which people are able to buy, if cannot, please someone can replace it. And if Rolex want to go premium, just make something people want, transparent bottom cover, open work and complications etc

Very much this. There is no shortage of watches, just a shortage at dealers as they sold them all cheap to grey market dealers to make a quick buck and move stock. Literally thousands for sale new online (all +20% MSRP). I just smile and know the bubble won't last and then there will be a lot around for under market value as they try to recoup losses.
