Jazz music will widen your musical vocabulary and make you a better musician! It will make your ears train to listen and comprehend harmonically complex stuff! It will help a guitarist to re imaging guitar in entirety rather than 1st position /second position!

@@RoRo-vr6wxtheory DEFINITELY HELPS, especially as u get into more complex ideas. Jazz can definitely be a complex genre to get into, and it can be a bit much if u don’t have even maybe just the basics of theory down. Unless you rather just copy what is being played and remember shapes, than u don’t need to worry, but to grow and understand it is really advisable to learn the theory behind it

Awesome video mate. You’ve got a great teaching style. I’ve played guitar for most of my life so I’ve picked up kinda jazz style playing abilities along the way. However to be able to play with anyone else and not be a solo hog because all I know are ropey “jazz style” solos, I really want and need to learn the fundamentals! Haha! And also as you say, to be able to play some of the songs I love. I’ll be starting with these three after watching this and I’m off for a look at your other videos to start learning right now haha 😄

This is great news! Been playing guitar for quite a while but new to jazz. Even that simple example of Autumn leaves you gave is inspiring me to practice. I know a few jazz chords and I'm learning arpeggios, and I've found that even that's enough to get started. It doesn't have to be amazing or complex in the beginning, it can be simple and pleasing right away. Thank you!

Some nice suggestions. Starting with Perdido and 'Pent up House' worked great for me because they are almost exclusively made of 2 5 1s and 2 5s. They are such common cadences in jazz, so playing over those progressions repeatedly really helps you build a repertoire of licks that move with those changes and gives you melody fragments that you can apply to new songs. I got the suggestions from Jans Lasen. I would say his video for week 1 and this for week 2. Autumn leaves is great but it moves around a bit more, you don't want to spend energy remembering long chord sequences to start with.

  • @pickinstone

here's the thing, these tunes might be easier to get into--but they aren't "easy tunes". Work over a tune is never done. Tunes like Satin Doll often get the short end of the stick at jams because they are "easy". Same with Autumn Leaves. Show me 1,000 amatuer musicians talking crap about these tunes and I'll show you a true pro using Summertime to dig deep and tell you the meaning of life with his or her solo. Tunes aren't boring, people are. Blue Bossa is a great tune to start learning changes, yes. But it is also a great tune to practice improvisatory composition techniques like thematic development or line contour. That's besides practicing subs, but make those subs tasty--it still has to make sense melodically too :)
