    i love the elbow. in my opinion it is the most versatile weapon in a martial artists arsenal. it is also tends to be the most underutilized.

    The elbow strike (and knee strike) are in the kata of all karate or kenpo styles originating from Okinawa. They are also common to fighting arts that don't have kata. Muay Thai easily comes to mind. Of course, modern sports styles mostly don't allow them. Some of those folks think kata useless. Some alphabets are very long; some are just jab, right, cross, and uppercut. I keep seeing "this style" beats "that style" on KZread. No, this guy beat that guy. Of course there are a lot of folks posted on KZread now who should be shown as plain stupid.

    Excellent video, excellent didactics, Jesse. Sorry because of the question, but, according to your experience, would you recommend the practice of karate as means of self-defence? I would like to begin either with Goju Ryu or Shotokan because of that reason, along with other motivations such as curiosity and interest on the historical aspect of the art as a whole. Greetings from Venezuela, and thanks for sharing your knowledge.

    chromerhodium Unfortunately, many modern Karate practitioners have no idea of neither combative applications nor biomechanics behind elbow strikes. Why? Because it doesn't score in competitions! 😂

  • @chromerhodium

    @chromerhodium

    7 жыл бұрын

    Jesse Enkamp That is very true, Jesse-sensei! Many Karatekas just practiced to compete. That's also the reason why I think that cross training with other arts and a lot of Bunkai would help a Karateka fully utilize his/her skills in combat and self-defense.

    Hi Jesse! I'm thinking about taking up karate and I just wanted to know what karate styles don't contain any grappling or ground techniques. By that I mean that I want to learn a style that focuses on punches, elbows, knees, palms, and takedowns. Please list as many karate styles as you can if there are any that match those requirements. Thanks!

    Wado ryu(kai) what I do focuses mainly on strikes. There's not a lot of throws really apart from some partner work there's few locks though but again that's just during partner work. Take downs are just sweeps

    All styles have these elements because they are contained in the kata that most styles share. Most schools don't practice these elements because they focus on competition not self defense. I train wado ryu and originally it was very apparent it was the karate jujitsu hybrid it was meant to be but most schools no longer teach much of that. You can walk in to any dojo and it will be clear real quick if they do any ground work. Why not learn it though? Karate ground work is different then BJJ and I would say it isn't a waste to do both
