3 Magnificent Days Fishing and Camping on Skye

3 magnificent days afloat on the Sea of the Hebrides, wild camping on a deserted island and fishing for skate, tope and spurdogs, all in windless sunshine. Not a midge in sight either...
I've fished the shoreline on Skye a fair number of times now, but never hauled a boat all the way up there before. An excellent forecast finally persuaded me to make the effort and do some more exploring.

    Glad you enjoyed it - we certainly did. I think it's the only time I've actually camped on my own desert island, at least on the sea. Definitely one I'll try again if time off and forecasts line up nicely.

    Definitely a great spot, although we were dead lucky with the weather too. It's absolutely down for a return trip at some point - there's just something about having an island to yourself that appeals! And the fishing was good too🙂

    Glad you enjoyed it - I was really surprised how well it came together as it was a rather last minute thing. I was kicking myself for not being better kitted out for tope though. Trevor picked his one up on skate gear, but we lost 2 more which bit off lighter rigs aimed at spurdog and rays. There's always next time...

    Great video. Just back from a week in Skye. Loads of small coalfish and pollock. Bigger pollock thin on the ground. A couple of spurries up to12lbs. Still enough mackerel around to keep me in fresh bait. Always inspiring to see your videos to entice me back there.

    Thanks! A 12lb spurdog is a fine fish from the shore though, and they do look nice and mean as they glide alongside in such clear water. Same as you, we were struggling to get pollack although there were loads of smallish coley around - 4 or 5 at a time on feathers.

    Ah - that bit's actually true! We'd just set up the tents and were loading stuff into them. We were just too lazy to swap the waders for sensible gear when we'd finished offloading the boat. It was a warm, calm day so we paid for that decision in a few buckets of sweat!

    Funnily enough we did very badly with pollack, despite it being a very large tide and trying several different marks. Usually I've found them fairly easy to get, so it was a bit disappointing. I've not really done much bottom fishing from the shore on Skye but have had decent catches of spurdog on a couple of occasions. Rays are frequently mentioned by other anglers but the one in this video is the only one I've caught.

    There are a lot of usable slips on Skye if you have 4WD. Starting at Kyle of Lochalsh and running up the north side of the island, the old ferry slip at Kyle of Lochalsh was fine a few years ago, although I've not been back since, and I assume Kykeakin on the Skye side will be OK too. There is a small boat slip at Sconser (at the Raasay ferry terminal) which looks OK although you're on to rough ground below it. Staffin has an excellent slipway and I know it's been used by many other anglers. There is a slip on Camas More, north of Uig, but I think this is fairly exposed (never been there), and I think it should be possible to get in at Uig itself. Milovaig on Loch Pooltiel. Carbost on Loch Harport will give access to Bracadale - there are other slips/jetties here too, at Harlosh, Caroy, etc. but I'm not sure all are publicly accessible and they may be a little dodgy in poor weather. There's a good slip on Loch Slapin, but I'm not sure whether the fish farm allow you to use it. A badly broken but usable slip at Ord. There will be plenty others too, so just keep your eyes open! To be honest, December in Skye will be cold and dark on a small boat, and probably windy - I'd have a fall back plan ready in case the weather doesn't play ball.

    Hi Doug . I’m planning a very similar trip ! I was thinking about Mull , but like the look of Skye . Can you tell me where you launched the boat . Fantastic video !

  • @Corkwing-DougK

    @Corkwing-DougK

    3 жыл бұрын

    Hi Peter, we launched at Harlosh, where there's a rough slip at Camas Ban. Concrete ramp leading on to shingle and then some sand lower down the tide. We'd to pile stones up against the concrete to get a step down from the concrete to the shingle, but otherwise OK. I'd be wary in a SW or W wind here unless you have someone to hold the boat whilst you park/retrieve the car, and a heavy boat might have problems unless you've a beefy tow vehicle. There's a lot of shallow rocks at low water, so tread carefully until you're well clear of the boat moorings. Parking is pretty limited, but it's not likely to be too busy either!

    Hi Martin, Yes, we were launching at Harlosh - it's a little bit on the rough side but OK. I've fished Skye from the shore a few times but not with a boat before. Not been up to Neist for many years but I'll probably give it a go sometime during the quieter months.

    @@martinnash8085 I've heard of Roag but never actually fished it - that's the problem with Skye, there's just too many choices! I have shore fished just opposite it though, on the western shore of Bracadale for some decent spurdogs and some not so decent pollack. It was a hard scramble, but a fine quiet place to fish. I'm guessing your big fish at Neist are probably tope like the one Trevor picked up off Talisker, although I've hooked a couple of skate from the shore on Skye which I couldn't do anything with. I really need to get back out!!! 😢

    The GPS settled around 15mph, ranging around 14-16mph. That's pretty typical of what I've found on other trips - maybe a little more on a lightly laden day trip with 2 aboard. Three aboard drops that to 11-12mph.
