Once you understand this chord structure, your piano playing will never be the same. It's used commonly in both Jazz and Neo Soul, but you'll really hear it used in an absolutely gorgeous way in modern Neo Soul-Inspired tracks that cross genres as well. A really important part of this sound is the dim(maj7) chord, i.e. a diminished triad with a major 7. The structure comes down to being built like a block chord, but with a major 7 instead of a 6. Use this over any melody or chord progression for a modern sound. Enjoy this jazz and Neo Soul piano tutorial with Noah Kellman.

    All of these chord progressions sound like Robert Glasper’s style right down to the accents on the notes in the melody. He’s the current king of Neo Soul jazz and this was very helpful in breaking down his style! Thanks! Also, I enjoyed your video on my good friend Barry Harris (May he rest in power)

    Wow this channel is EXACTLY what I’ve been looking for. As someone who’s played classical piano for 10+ years and has taught myself a lot of blues/jazz theory, I found myself really stuck at a beginner-intermediate level with my jazz improv and a lot of channels on KZread seem more geared towards very beginner players so I’d spend lots of time listening to them explain concepts I already understood. I’m gonna be watching a lot more of these as I continue to progress

    Really loving these voicings... they remind me a little of early EST, ECM trios as well as Jeremy Sams music for "The Mother" (especially the tune on the end titles to that movie), I'm particularly fond of cluster voicing and inverting them... I think stringing a melody line through these changes is the key thing.

One suggestion I’d personally like to offer is that the background/transition music in particular is quite loud (during describing the video and sharing your advertisers info etc) and would be much less assaulting to the senses and more palatable if it were ~5db~ lower or so. It's cool to hear you lay out all these progressions, but they seem so random! My ear just isn't strong enough to hear what's going on when the tonal center seems to switch around so much, but at least I have some ideas now.

I'm not professionally trained in reading standard notation music. I noticed the written chords above in the example sheet music, but these video breakdowns w/(light-up keyboard) are my best method of learning! Is there a video (light-up keyboard) for each key, for all 25 progressions? Thank you! Have a blessed 2022 New Year everyone! - Luther

  • @NoahKellman

    @NoahKellman

    2 жыл бұрын

    Hey Luther, thanks for the kind words. Really glad the lessons are helping you. With the PDF, there are examples for the first key in each key. However, the example videos are not in every single key. I actually think that after you learn them in one key, there are a lot of benefits to switching to other keys by ear as opposed to using the visuals if you have the patience as well. That said, the sheet music is useful because sometimes you can also use it as a reference and to check your mistakes.
