Just getting rid a small amount in an area really helps. Five minutes a day totally changes a house. The container can only hold the size of the container. The container can be a drawer, a basket, a cupboard, a car, a house, etc. Dana K. White, Clutterbug, and Minimal mom, and Hoarder's Heart are really helpful.

Hoarding is a mental disorder and yes, we have a hard time discarding items bc it’s a coping mechanism for our anxiety, depression, PTSD, etc. I LOVED to talk about the true mindset of hoarding disorder with you! I’m a recovery hoarder from a level 4 to level 1-2. AND I’m on Baby Step 6 in the DR program, I’m also great at saving money too 😉❤

I’m in a similar boat, but the stuff that ended up at my house is 120+ years of family photos, genealogy, and memorabilia. I’m letting go of some things, but I think I’m going to have to see it all once before I can decide what can all go.

I recently had a mystery illness that kept me in bed me for 3 weeks. I didn't have the energy to do anything other to let my dog in and out of the yard. It made me realize that I need very few things, including some of my beautiful furniture. I am determined to get rid of all of that hampers me. I had already begun decluttering things like coffee mugs but I am even more determined now.

I have decluttered and simplified my house, thanks to encouragement from great KZreadrs: The Minimal Mom, Clutterbug, and A Hoarder’s Heart. ❤️❤️❤️. Hearing your definitions, I was probably a level 1 or 2 hoarder, but didn’t realize that I was. I’m so thankful to have a peaceful home...but I do have more craft supplies than I need or can easily fit into my spaces.

When I was single, I had a small apartment. It was easy to have only what I needed. It actually got to the point where one day, I told myself that I did need at least a couple decorative items. Then I got married to somebody who attaches sentimental value to everything, likes to keep things "just in case," and HATES to clean and organize. Life got a little harder, but I learned to still keep my stuff minimal and kept the whole house tidy. Now that we have added children and a pet, that's all out the door. I struggle with toys, toiletries, food, books, and kids' clothes. It's an explosion. And I can't seem to mentally set aside the time to tackle it.

Bro, I had to check and make sure I didn’t write it. I don’t know who you are, but I feel the same way. 2 Toddlers, 4 pets, She hates to clean. I tried to help, but it’s like the house is non existent, she will do the basic stuff, wash clothes, make dinner. Buy them clothes. I’m embarrassed to invite anyone over. You have to lay down some rules. And follow thru with them. It’s like training a pet. I set out a donate bin and ask if she has anything that she wants to donate to but it in there. Ask her to declutter an area of the things she wants, that she wants b/c you are going to clear it out on (this) day. If she is lazy she won’t do it and then you can just throw everything away. Designate a clean area, and tell her if she does want anything thrown away, she can leave it there and you will clear it every night or every other night. I throw away stuff from the counters all the time. It’s hard not to throw away things that her grandmother gave her. See a counselor if you have too. I haven’t done that, yet.

The good thing is that their all in 1 area of our garage. But I find it interesting that these are the items I'm not ready to let go of yet. Excellent video, Rachel ! Great reminders … I totally agree ! Ahhhhh …. Former “Junk Room” person here ! Yikes ! Thank Heavens that is NO more ! I am counting up in my memory right now : four residences with an actual Junk Room, & three with basement or attic with junk. Crazy ! I have let go & downsized significantly over the years. I’m sure there is more I can let go of ( although thankfully , not a ton). I DO hang on to books ! 2 & 1/2 bookshelves worth. But I HAVE let go of at least another full book shelf’s worth. Hmmm … probably two. My closet is calling me to make another purge. But thankfully, I’ve always done that & yes have not only consistently donated quite a bit, but sold as well. And happily, I think I buy a lot less clothes than most.

4300 sq ft house and a 4.5 car garage - I fit 6 cars in the garage parking 2 of them sideways against the back wall if needed. 4/5 of the basement is empty. Our kids are 16 and 12 and we have always purged toys and stuff as a donation and keep a very frugal amount of “stuff”. Many people in my neighborhood have to park cars outside because they have collected so much dumb stuff and have no room. It blows my mind how much clutter people keep

Ohhh, boy.. the "sale" syndrome!.. and online is the worst offender! How often did I buy something I didn't need to get "free" shipping! And while you use the term depreciated.. "where moth and rust destroy and where thieves break in and steal" (Matt. 6).. stuff often DOES wear out,, whether you use it - or not! You mention hobbies.. well, the more "niche" your hobby is.. the fewer people are out there that will want what you have.. and you may have the sad duty of throwing away good, useful, stuff.. because you can't get rid of it easily. Everyone says, "Ebay" at moments like these.. but putting stuff online and successfully selling it isn't something that is as easy to do as you think.. IT TAKES TIME to do all the steps necessary to product a good transaction! How many paint cans are in your garage that haven't been used in longer than 5 years? You might be surprised (I was).. the paint is probably no good anymore.. because the container has rusted inside! All the "lawn remedies" we buy.. but never use. And of course, there are "collectables" people.. one guy had all these "valuable" things in his house.. when he passed away, his kids had to get rid of all that stuff.. and didn't get what he "thought" it should be worth when he was alive. Note to self: if you see the "value" in something.. find someone else who does.. or no one will value it.. wasted money, time, space! Great, short, Video!
