    Hello I also have a question how do you wash your dirty pottery laundry? I don't have a trap and I've been washing them out with a garden hose. And hanging them on my clothes line.

  • @PotteryCrafters

    Yes, Heidi. Very smart! That is exactly what I do with my pottery apron. I wash my rags in a bucket. Never in the washer. 👍😊

  • @PotteryCrafters

    Thank you. Welcome to the wonderful world of crafting pottery. I just put the slab of clay over a big bowl. Make sure you place plastic on the bowl or mold to get the clay off the bowl. Because when it starts to dry the clay will start to shrink and stick to the bowl. It doesn't have to be perfect because I just use them to dry out the clay. Any more questions, feel free to ask.

    Great video!! What do you do with the syringed water? Can it go down the drain?

  • @PotteryCrafters

    @PotteryCrafters

    3 ай бұрын

    Thank you. I put a touch of vinegar in the water and reuse it or I throw outside. I don't pour it down the drain because I don't have a sink trap and even though the water is clear it still may contain clay particles. Now of course it would take many years to clog the pipes but I just stay on the safe side. 😊

    Any advice on how to wash your wheel throwing or handbuilding cloths . I used to use 8 buckets of water to wash them before I put them in the washing machine. It was time consuming, so I started to just throwing them out . I live in an apartment building and I don't even have a balcony, but I don't want to give up on ceramic 😃

  • @PotteryCrafters

    @PotteryCrafters

    Жыл бұрын

    I do the same thing with my wheel water as I do with my floor water; just take the extra water off the top and let the clay dry out. I let my clothes soak, so I don't have to use so many buckets. Then just let the clay settle also. If possible you could get a drain trap and wash your clothes in that sink. I hope this helped. I would not want you to have to give up Ceramics.

    Hi! Thanks for this video. I was wondering why you strain the clay water before waiting for the clay/water to separate? Is this a necessary step?

  • @PotteryCrafters

    @PotteryCrafters

    Жыл бұрын

    You're welcome emilyyyn That is a very good question. You can strain it later if you like. Whichever way works best for you. This way, I can get any debris out of the clay right away. I can take the clay out for slip or let it dry out without having to strain it later. 😊

  • @merryherdt
    @merryherdt Жыл бұрын

    Just a question, Could I just use a double pillowcase, strain the water and hang the case like you did in your recycle video? What is the benefit of allowing the clay to dry first?

  • @PotteryCrafters

    @PotteryCrafters

    Жыл бұрын

    Hi Merry. Yes you can but because the clay particles are so tiny you still can't let that water go down your drain. The great benefit to letting the clay dry first is that the water absorbs faster and more evenly into bone dry clay. You can test it out your self to see the difference. 😊

    do u syringe out the extra water from the mop water bucket too? before leaving it to dry?

  • @PotteryCrafters

    @PotteryCrafters

    Жыл бұрын

    That is a good question. I just throw that water outside because I don't recycle that clay. If you can't throw it outside, then Yes, take the water out and let the dirty clay water dry out and throw it away. 😊

    What about glaze water?

  • @PotteryCrafters

    @PotteryCrafters

    Good question. I treat it the same as clay because it does contain a bit of clay and over time may effect your pipes. 😊

  • @robinlocher1509

    Can you just reuse that water that you suck out of the bucket as wetting water again while you're throwing?

  • @PotteryCrafters

    @PotteryCrafters

    11 ай бұрын

    Great question. Yes you can. It may smell a bit moldy but that's ok because all clay contains mold. If it bothers you just add a little vinegar to the water. Some potters will use bleach but I prefer vinegar.

    I really don't think you should pour your clay water on the ground if your area isn't where you got the clay from - it can have a negative impact on the ecosystem

  • @PotteryCrafters

    That is a great point! That is why you should know your clay and be aware of your environment. I live on the side of a mountain and think of all the new houses being built up here and the damage we are doing to our environment and echo system. That's another reason why I save all my clay. 😊
