3 Days Camping + Fishing Remote Rugged Canyon (100 Fish Caught)

Ойын-сауық

This may well have been my best trip of the entire 2023 season. My friend and I, him on a fly rod and myself on tenkara, spent 2 nights and 3 days inside this incredibly rugged and remote canyon that was absolutely filled to the brim with wild rainbow and brown trout. We lost track within the first day, but between him and I, 100 fish were easily landed. Sleeping in my hammock, I spent nights under the stars and fell asleep to the sounds of waterfalls. What an incredible place to backpack and fish. Thanks for watching.

It's shocking what kind of streams you'll find out in the Mojave!

Another awesome video! Your scenery and filming is amazing! Think you said there would be more camping video in the future, I would also like to see Travis fish more. I primarily fish with a fly rod now, hardly ever use the tenkara. I use tight line and wool indicators some dry droppers. I sure would love to fish that stream with a streamer, I'd say there are some monster trout in it! Anyway I sure did enjoy it thanks for sharing, and please video Travis more, he seems a little camera shy but he's doing great

Appreciate the feedback! For sure, more camping stuff in the future. This video as well as another trip that I took to Utah for 3 days are filmed last season, so not *as much* of the camping stuff as I'd like, but as I film more stuff this season it'll trend that direction. Definitely want to integrate Travis more but it sure is hard juggling everything. Always something to strive for. Thanks again!

Quite a fabulous canyon! I’ve watched the first third or so (I tend to view your long videos in installments … an age thing with me) and I am enjoying your angling and photographic talents immensely. Looking forward to the balance of the adventure!

Love it! They can be a lot to digest at once - I get it. Glad to hear you're enjoying them though. The long ones certainly are rewarding to put together in the edit for me.

Love the video! When you use a nymph with your Tenkara setup, are you tightening? Or is there some line on the water?

Thanks so much Donnie! Tight line all the way. Long tenkara rods able to reach out over some rapids and place that fly right where you want it, all while on a tight line is so powerful. You can present really natural drifts and the strike detection is off the charts. Same concepts as euronmyphing, really, but with the advantage of an even longer rod.

    Chalk stream in a canyon?

  • @FlickyFlies

Are chalk streams essentially creeks that run through limestone? If so, there's definitely a good bit of limestone down in this canyon.

@@FlickyFlies Limestone or dolomite - carbonates. This type of geology is very productive. I use CalTopo for mapping rock-type. Because rainwater and plant residue dissolve this material, the aquifer becomes porous. The geology buffers pH, regulates temperature, and adsorbs excessive nutrients; the streams are typically clear and productive. Those fish were above average in size, probably because of the geology.

Chalk stream is the British term for spring creeks that flow through limestone. Most comparable to the limestone spring-fed streams of the Driftless region here in the US
