3 Crucial Reasons Why Spiritual Experiences Must Be Kept Secret

The goal of Vedantic spirituality is to lead us to experience the ultimate reality of who we really are - that we are neither the body and nor are we the mind. Instead we are the Atman, the Soul - pure, infinite and eternal, which is an indivisible part of the ocean of consciousness known as Brahman or God - the Absolute. This pinnacle moment when the soul experiences its true nature and experiences its unbreakable unity with Brahman, is known as Self-realization, or God-realization, or Samadhi in Vedanta. Reaching it is the ultimate aim of all yogic practices.

Now as a sadhak (spiritual aspirant) begins to make progress along this road to God-realization, he or she naturally starts to have certain spiritual experiences - either through dreams, or during meditation or as flashes of inspiration. Upon having these preliminary experiences many aspirants become so excited that they start to share them willy-nilly with people around.
However, as we shall see in this video, there are three very sound reasons why this should not be done. The video also details an incident that occurred in the life of Swami Brahmananda (direct disciple of Sri Ramakrishna), that highlights the ego-driven hurdles that can occur on the road to Samadhi.
While watching this video please note that the following terms all mean the same: Samadhi = God Realization = Self-Realization = Soul Realization.

With all due respect, Swami Vivikenanda, who was referenced in this video, spoke about his own enlightenment experience many times and, to be frank, many other great spiritual masters did as well. Speaking of one's spiritual experience is not an issue. What is an issue is the belief that such an experience makes one unique. However, if one is truly enlightened, they will know, without doubt, that they are better than no one else. That all is one. Thus, by speaking about their own experience, they are aiming to guide others closer to experiencing The Divine within their own selves. Furthermore, given how modern-day society still very much treats spiritual experiences as taboo, these are often very worrying, lonely and traumatizing experiences for someone who may not have grasped what occurred. In light of this, hearing of other people's own experiences will bring a great sense of comfort.

Isn’t the concept of this video, in itself, a way of “sharing” a spiritual experience or spiritual dogma? In the all-that-is, there are no secrets. Keeping secrets perpetuates separation and ego.. We are all together holding a piece of an infinite puzzle. Each of us holds a critical piece. Hiding your piece in your pocket doesn’t help us put our puzzle together. Although I don’t share the sentiment of this video, I appreciate the alternate perspective it provides as a way to help me articulate what I DO believe. The very act of sharing this video has opened up interesting conversations that might help all of us focus the lens that we perceive our journey with.

Wow, ever since my awakening I've realized very quickly over and over that the universe wants me to keep my experiences to myself and only share in certaint situations. I would even get cut off by something that distracts both of us, right as I realize I'm sharing too much and many times when the person says "what were we talking about?" It was like I knew the universe wanted me to change the subject. At first I didn't know why but over time I started to see why. Its hard tho cuz it feels lonely sometimes and sometimes you feel like you want to tell everyone but you can't

well you can perhaps reflect on this after 1 year. It happened the same way and i realized after so many times there was a sudden distraction when talking about thing very hard to talk about. It's freaky and really weird. And feels very lonely if the spirits give you a call to change the subject. Many times things keep falling around you or other people suddenly interrupt. I think spirits can make them happen as they operate outside of time. So now i tell you one of my physical experiences: Since i felt very lonely in my spiritual path. It almost felt like i was the only one, so i almost cried and said that i must be the only one living this and im probably alone in this. Then on that very moment in daylight i see an amazingly bright dot of light. The light was so beautiful becouse it was the whitest you can emagine. I quickly realized it was no helicopter or plane. It then dissapeared into nothing.

You are right about the danger of pride coming from talking about such experiences or even from experiencing them. But there is one group of people who talk about them. Namely, the "god-realized gurus" that you mention. They often talk freely about their experiences. This is because it is possible to talk about such experiences for good reasons. Talking about such experiences can uplift, educate, and inspire others. In a world that is more cynical than ever before, this is a valuable service.

I feel this is an old school of thoughts when it was the time of darkness (as a game plan for human evolution). Now we are entering the era of light and we must change our framework and thinking. Experiences are like chocolates. After this experience stage is surpassed, one enters some waters of real spiritual realm, the calmness comes automatically and not needed to be taught! Stopping the beginner spiritual aspirant from talking about it is like stopping child from playing. They will learn their own, its a process, even our great sages were full of anger from ego despite doing sadhana in SOLITUDE for years. Dropping ego/pride automatically comes in advanced stages.

The experience should be shared. Its a divine act and as a light worker it should be passed along to your loved ones to open their minds. If your ego gets involved and you actually feel your better than the next person due to this experience, you should reevaluate yourself and what thought you experienced bc in my opinion this experience should've humbled you. If that wasn't the case. I'm sure it wasn't a spiritual awakening.

Shared experiences with those to give thanks and to understand if what ones going through is an alone venture. Ive yet to meet someone that is going through anything similar. I dont potray my journey as better then anyone but rather to understand eaches journey. To not share would be selfish and that is of the ego. We all have our own journeys and to say it's one way or the highway makes me think of a similar idea around your either christian or the not and the not goes automatically to hell. I myself have never shared my spiritual miracles with anybody without FIRST assuring them that this is NOT by any means an egosticle or braggadocious attempt for approval or adulation. On the contrary, It is to share with them as a humble, fellow human what I have been through on my long life journey of good and bad and sometimes very difficult times in my life that brought me to where I am now and let them know that anybody can reach these levels if they choose to put their faith in the Infinite strength of Themselves,God, and the Universe to do so.

There are lessons that can keep the ego down, and jealousy and competition can also bring someone to spiritual path. But I agree one should not discuss meditation itself because it creates unnecessary expectations on other. Meditation experiences are very individual.

It depends on what the individual believes - if you understand divinity as part of oneself as we are part of divinity then there is no need for any confusion. Open debate is healthy between various religions, and one does tend to keep certain things to oneself, however the question is : is anything really secret? Interesting topic.

You don't have to share your spiritual experiences to guide someone on this path. There are many ignorant people in this world who need compassionate guidance to start their journey. And that guidance for others comes naturally when you have experience. Without experience you can not clear their doubts when it arises in their mind. Let them seek it. You don't have to tell them everything untill unless they seek it.

After about four years, I have a little equilibrium within and out side in my life. Because Gopi Krishna shared his experiences, that small ripple has made people knowledgeable to a great extent today. I would say, in an ideal world, I would like to go out and share and talk about these experiences.

Very good, there is also 2 other reasons. The 4th would be getting stuck on the experience and how great it was. This will prevent the aspirant from experiencing more spiritual experience. They really should be forgotten like you forget a dream. The 5th reason de-energisation. When you speak you release the thought energy into world. A trouble shared is a trouble halved. A trouble shared three times becomes one eighth of its original original discomfort. When a Deity like Shiva or Krishna gives you a spiritual experience it is like putting a candy in a child's hand as a reward for doing a chore. If the child eats at the enjoy the sweetness and the experience of the taste. If the child shares it, the child cannot enjoy the sweetness nor his or her reward. What you have been given is a thought candy for the soul. It's designed to enter the mortal soul and help awaken it. If you go and share that then the energy is given to other people who haven't earnt that reward. Therefore, it is wasted on someone who isn't ready for it.

The main problem I have with what's presented here is that when you advise people against hearing the doubts of others lest they doubt their own experiences, you are effectively advising against critical thought. If their experiences are indeed simply dreams, they should be free to conclude it. But when you advise them to only discuss the matter with gurus who share their beliefs, you're saying "only talk to people who already hold the same beliefs you do". Such people are never going to dispute the reality of those beliefs, only confirm them. So if in fact none of this spiritual stuff is real, they will never find out because the only people they're asking about it have also deceived themselves in the same way. This is a poor way to arrive at independently verifiable truths, but an excellent way for people who have been fooled to keep themselves fooled for their entire lives.

Its absolutely ok to doubt your own experiences and certainly as a beginner that will and should happen. As we all know many people hallucinate and imagine all sorts of "spiritual awakenings".. So such delusions have to be avoided but they cannot be cleared away by another who is just as ignorant or deluded as we are. For this one has to: 1. Either seek the help of a genuine guru. Such a genuine guru need not be a living person. Many genuine gurus have left behind immense bodies of literature and one can obtain plenty of guidance from there. 2. Or and this is the BEST path - the aspirant should pray for validation and confirmation DIRECTLY from the Divine. In this way the aspirant starts to establish a strong personal relation with the Divine and thus comes closer to the goal of realizing and experiencing the Divine. Without establishing a personal relationship with the Divine (which is in reality within us all - as our soul) one cannot progress on the spiritual path. 3. Additionally in Vedanta the one quality that is heavily emphasized is for an aspirant to develop is "vivek" - the ability to separate truth from falsehood, the real from the unreal. One has to have strict rationality and firmly self-analyze one's own experiences. This requires humility too. 4. Last point to note is that spiritual truths are a matter of experience. Its like having a baby and then talking to another woman who too has given birth vs. one who has never had kids. The latter can never fully explain to one what it is like to give birth or raise a child. Similarly one has to sit at the feet of a genuine guru to learn about spiritual truths. And for this one has to have enough "vivek" to find and identify such a guru...just about any guru on TV or in a popular ashram will NOT do. One cannot be a gullible novice waiting to be taken advantage of, on the spiritual path. Spirituality requires hard work and preparation, not a blind running helter and skelter seeking for answers from the outside world, but to patiently and persistent turn within and seek the answers from inside our own self, from our soul which is one with the Divine. Hope this clears your doubt, Best Wishes Pulkit

    >"Its absolutely ok to doubt your own experiences and certainly as a beginner that will and should happen." But the video says the way to handle it is to seek guidance from people who will only affirm your religious beliefs. It says to avoid people who will cause you to doubt. If the beliefs are not true, this is a perfect way to remain deceived. >"Or and this is the BEST path - the aspirant should pray for validation and confirmation DIRECTLY from the Divine. " This is not a reliable source of truth. Mormons also pray in order to receive confirmation of Mormonism. It's just people consulting their own feelings. Your feelings will always confirm whatever you most wish to be true. >"So such delusions have to be avoided but they cannot be cleared away by another who is just as ignorant or deluded as we are. " How do you know skeptics are ignorant/deluded? >"Additionally in Vedanta the one quality that is heavily emphasized is for an aspirant to develop is "vivek" - the ability to separate truth from falsehood, the real from the unreal. One has to have strict rationality and firmly self-analyze one's own experiences." Science is how to do that. You should test beliefs against reality, not just consult people who already believe as you do. >"not a blind running helter and skelter seeking for answers from the outside world," Consulting a variety of perspectives and testing your beliefs against the external reality is a time tested way of determining truth. It resulted in the discoveries concerning electricity that made the computer you're reading this on possible. Consulting only your own feelings via prayer, or people who share your religious beliefs, has never produced any comparable, tangible demonstration of the truth of spiritual claims. >"Hope this clears your doubt" Why should I be averse to doubt? Doubt is in fact a very good, constructive thing. When you think of people who do not doubt themselves, do you imagine good people, or bad ones? "The whole problem with the world is that fools and fanatics are always so certain of themselves, and wiser people so full of doubts." - Bertrand Russell

Hi there! Lovely video! I have a question. What about teaching? Do you not recommend sharing personal experiences? I find that sometimes they can be really helpful. I have gotten past having a spiritual ego, and past others' doubts becoming my own. If I am sharing with the intent of teaching, their isn't likely to be jealousy. You are a spritual teacher, do you ever use your own spiritual examples to teach? Or do you think even that is a bad idea?

We all have varied ways of approaching spirituality . But the true journey of the self is wen you keep your spiritual experiences like a journal to note and return to during your journey. When you mature enough through service of others, you can truly share your experience as a blessing. If you try to do it before you evolve as a seeker it may seem arrogant. But even then if you can handle the result if sharing such experience with humility and equanimity, then it becomes a part of your seva or service, not a reason for pride.

Scott Hall..., Yes, you make a good point. But she makes a good also. I think, perhaps, you may both be right. It's not in "what we say" whilst we're socializing.., but rather it's in "how we say it". You know..., (1) no bragging, (2) no "look at me, look at me, I'm God's favorite". I dunno. But whenever we learn new stuff (even spiritual stuff), we experience it at a deeper level when we teach it to others, and share our points of view with others (even if they disagree). We gain deeper knowledge from different perspectives. Once again, only if we're not lauding it over somebody. But you raise an interesting point, Scott. TY.

Spiritual experience must share to everybody, because you want them because experience its blissfulness. Not to the strangers unless u fully self realized. But to your near one those who will believe and trust ur words, otherwise they will think you become psychic. Its okay what the hell they think about you because ur blissfulness doesn't depend on them only you. What I m trying to say is that you want them to be happy and ecstatic the way you feel right now. So it is okay to share. It may drive them towards spirituality if they are willing.

This is true in the case of Sadhana. The seeker can be easily misled by false light. But when one is "aware" or "awakened" to "The Truth" there is an immense righteous desire to help the others who are still asleep. I am not talking about "Samadhi" as in the case Nirvikalpa etc, but "Ajapa" Samadhi where one does everything consciously, fulfilling his every day "Karma". I should say one should follow something called "Enlightened Ethics", and know with whom to share, what to share, and how to share if he wants to help mankind. Else become a "stone Budha". Let the wisdom prevail in dealing with the unawakened people. As regards to finding a Guru, Guru appears whenever you need. One does not search for a Guru. When you find him/her, the Guru can validate your experience in relation to his. Normally, a seeker would need a Guru when he is going through trials and tribulations from the outside world otherwise known as "The Dark Knight of the soul" to assure him that it is just going to be OK.

Who develop the law that says only a Guru can have and speak about a spiritual experience? What about the individuals who genuinely had one, who did not try to evoke a spiritual experience, nor wish it upon themselves, much less get egotistic about it? I really don't believe these individuals think they are better than any other person. Most are seeking to understand the meaning as to why it has occurred, or why it's reoccurring in their life. However, I do believe some do not speak of their experience, only because some people become angry, when they learn of such events. They are the ones who are actually putting false labels on such individuals.

I found this video to be remarkably clear-eyed and honest, very informative while also being free of any hint of preachiness or pretension. I do have one issue with it, and that is with the second point, where you say to avoid the doubt and skepticism of others. I certainly believe that spiritual learning takes time to grow and take form, but I do wonder at what point it becomes proper to begin questioning it? The rational part of my mind believes that there is nothing wrong with having occasional doubt, with questioning your own beliefs, because it is only by questioning them that we learn when we are wrong, and con continue to grow. .On the other hand, if the spiritual experience is genuine, it should stand up to questioning and shine forth through the doubt. We can build on your example of the young plant. It's true that, while young and tender, it is best to build a wall and protect it from harsh winds, torrential rains, and burning sunlight. But what happens when you over-do it? What if you build the wall so thick and tall that the plant is never enlivened by a fresh air, clear rain, or the sun's life-giving warmth? If left alone too long, the plant will sicken and die for lack or stimulation and nutrition. To have a truly healthy spiritual growth, one needs balance. One must have silence to build their own thoughts, but one must also have noise against which to strengthen and those thoughts. One must protect and nurture their beliefs, but one mus also know when to let them go when they are wrong and discover something new.

glad you found the video helpful! Thanks for your wonderful perspective and thoughts. You are absolutely right in your point about doubts arising on the spiritual path and the necessity to question one's experiences. In fact when the sadhak's spiritual experiences are few and far between he or she will certainly question them...and that is healthy. But the thing to note is that resolution of these doubts cannot come from our friends or fellow sadhaks who exist in the same/lower state of consciousness as us. In fact it can only come from the Divine directly. A firm conviction in the truth of one's spiritual experiences, develops only when the sadhak is able to establish a firm and direct relation with the Divine. By this I mean that the sadhak talks to the Divine about his doubts and aspirations and the Divine RESPONDS with the necessary help. This is an active living relationship, just as one would call and talk to a friend. So instead of chatting with one's friends and describing one's spiritual experiences and wondering if they are true or false, one must practice mentally reaching out to the Divine directly and resolving one's doubts. For this one prays to the DIVINE by saying: " Mother/Father I am still a beginner on the spiritual path. I known not whether my experiences are genuine or the result of my mental imaginations - please shine your grace on me and show me the correct path and remove my doubts. Give me the certainty and conviction that I crave. Let me depend only on you...help me progress to developing a firm and absolute faith in your existence and help." That is the objective of sadhana. One has to establish a relationship of dependence on the all-powerful Divine for everything. One must reach out to the highest consciousness in the face of doubts and difficulties and not feel the need to turn to friends etc. who all exist in a state of lower consciousness. Then the Divine responds by sending the necessary help, in the form of books of God-realized sages, or inspiration, or the help from a God-realized guru in the physical body etc. Whatever is NEEDED for the spiritual upliftment of a sincere sadhak, the Divine sends. This is how Sri Ramakrishna, Swami Vivekananda etc. have all progressed on the path of sadhana...Sri Ramakrishna whenever he had a doubt would go to the Kali temple and place it before MOTHER. Mother would resolve his doubts. He did not chit chat with his friends and relatives about his doubts...and the same is the goal for us. ;-) . Hope this gives you some more background on what I was trying to convey in this video. Thanks for your detailed and lovely comment.

Nejka, Try to talk directly with the Divine, and lay out your feelings in a mental conversation with the Divine. That is the BEST route. This way you start to establish a personal relationship with the Divine. You can imagine the Divine either as the Heavenly Father or the heavenly Mother. When you meditate, just have a mental conversation like you would with a person - say "Father/Mother, I know not if my spiritual experience is genuine or not, but please guide me forward. I am confused about so and so thing. Please shed your Grace and show me the right path. Please prove to me that my experience is genuine and provide me with some more experiences so that I can develop a firm and unshaken faith in your Divine presence." Whatever is in your heart express it freely. Admit your shortcomings, worries etc. If you say such a prayer sincerely for some period of time, the Divine WILL respond. This is the best way forward. No one can guide us better than the Divine. This guidance can come in the form of an inspiration, or through dreams, or through books of great God-realized gurus...there are many unfathomable ways in which the Divine responds to sincere prayers. I practice this myself. wishing you all success, Pulkit

Hello Nejka, Really glad you found it helpful! If you would like to know more about how we can surrender and connect in a closer and deeper way with the Divine I would suggest the following books: 1. Words of Mother (Sri Aurobindo Ashram) II and III 2. Some Answers from Mother (Sri Aurobindo Ashram) 3. More Answers from Mother (Sri Aurobindo Ashram) All 3 books can an be downloaded at www.sriaurobindoashram.org/ashram/mother/writings.php 4. Letters on Yoga by Sri Aurobindo Vol 2: There is a chapter in this book on Surrender. And furthermore there is a Section 3 called "The Foundation of Sadhana"...which teaches how to develop equanimity of mind in good and bad circumstances. Equanimity is a critical foundation of sadhana. Download from: www.sriaurobindoashram.org/ashram/sriauro/writings.php Best Wishes Pulkit

Entering a consiousness is just listening to someone talk whether on the inside threw thought, or on the outside threw talk, what better way then to talk about our experiencess to those who will listen and talk back.

I had similar experience where I shared experiences on social media and results were the same as the video. If I really had close friends with similar experience then it would be so cool to share your experiences especially with people you can trust❤🙏❤
