3 Common New Nurse Struggles

Being a new nurse is hard, and many new nurses get overwhelmed during the transition from nursing student to new nurse. In this video, I'll give three common struggles that new nurses face.

1. Exhaustion. One common struggle that new nurses face is exhaustion. After graduation, there is an onslaught of work. First, you have to actually graduate. Next, you have to study and pass NCLEX. Finally, you have to being orientation. The whole process for a new nurse graduation can be overwhelming.
2. Anxiety. New nurses can become very emotional and filled with all sorts of anxiety. You can begin to worry that you'll make a medical blunder and harm a patient. You might worry that you're going to forget basic skills or concepts that you learned in nursing school. You might also fear talking to doctors.

3. Feeling that nursing is too hard (feeling inadequate to meet the demands of the nursing profession). It can be very hard learning to document efficiently, performing nursing skills quickly, monitoring and assessing patients, admitting and discharging patients, etc.
All of this abrupt change can lead to disillusionment for new nurses, and some even question whether they can keep up with the work.
However, the good news is that these are all normal things that most all new nurses go through. I went through them myself, and this video offers some tips and encouragement for those of you who are struggling.

I've just finished my first 6 months off orientation! Can't believe how much I've learned. I had SO much anxiety the first few weeks on my own, and now I start my shifts feeling confident in my ability to care for my patients. Thankfully, I have an awesome team I can go to with all my questions and concerns. That makes a huge difference!

Omg transitioning from cna to rn is so different! I'm currently on nursing orientation and I'm always exhausted after work even though I was doing more manual labor as a cna. Time management is killing me right now. And I feel like I don't know anything at all! Like I don't know what I don't know! 😭😭

Nursing school and learning how to be an RN is like learning how to walk. It's freaking hard. Which foot goes first? How many centimeters does the foot go forward? What happens if something is in the way? Is elevation needed? Ahhhhhh walking is so hard lol (great video!)

Wow! Thank you for the kind words. I wasnt feeling much anxiety until I made a couple mistakes on my own. Then I really started to question myself and doubt myself! Luckily, my preceptor was there to correct me this time but I'm starting on my own tonight and the anxiety has peaked! But I will do as you say and ask for help when I need it and not beat myself up for little mistakes.

I am glad I came across this video. I am a slow learner. I am still on orientation and trying to get up to taking more patients. I had a really rough week where I just feel incompetent and hoping this week is better. I really hope it gets easier over time like you said. I’m trying to overcome my anxiety and try not to get behind on patient care and also try to know what’s going on with my patients. I look back and can’t believe I’ve been a nurse for 2 months and still struggling but I guess it’s normal. P

You must have been reading my mind because I am in my last semester of nursing school and while I feel semi confident here I am terrified of the prospect of being a nurse and not going back to my preceptor for things I'm unsure of, I wanna do well and be proficiant in my practice and never never hurt anyone definitely not intentionally

I recently got hired as a new grad this past May on a large Labor & Delivery floor on night shift. This will be my first job ever and I’m so nervous but excited. Do you have any advice for new graduate nurses that are starting out in a specialty? We only had three L&D days during clinicals and those lectures were over a year ago so I feel so lost starting out and I don’t want to look dumb when I start orientation 😂 Any advice would be great or even other channels/people to talk to! Thanks!

Time management is killing me . I work on a surgical nurse ICU step down. Sometimes its 4 patients and my self. Im presently supernumerary. My mentore always say im a sharp nurse im very alert but that im very slow and she scared I won't be able to manage my time and complete jobs on time . Thats what I'm worried abt time management but what slows me down im only in this hospital 1 mth and so far I've caught alot so far but they make me feel like im not going hard enough. I feel so stressed . Im an international nurse with 7 yrs post experience but everyone makes u feel dumb at wrk in this new job. The paper wrk is very tedious n sometimes u dont even have 1 hca .
