How do you use water in filmmaking to make any shot look better?
That's the question we ask Phil Rhodes, a writer for the American Cinematographer and Red Shark news, who presents us with 3 easy ways to utilize water on set. Afterwards, we demonstrate these techniques by recreating a scene similar to what you see in Blade Runner.

The 6D was surprisingly good in comparison.

60D. Sounds like he said 6D but the text says 60D

@@infopimpsrock3631 Debatable. The captions are auto generated and he said Mark II which suggests it's more likely a 6D and considering a 6D is full frame which is more appealing to filmmakers. Could still be either tho as both are popular vlogging cameras.

infopimps rock Even better, that means my 70D should be able to do something similar or even better.

I would think it's a 6D... 60D is hella old and certainly Apreture has better DSLRs laying around. But the titling?
Great tip about back lighting the rain, looking forward to listening to the podcast once it's up

That's crazy. I never thought about all this preparation to shot rain scenes in movies... That makes making a film even more remarkable. Great Tips! Keep it up!

so much prep! If you think about it most lights aren't anywhere close to waterproof which means most movie rain goes through this process
Very cool! Loved that you showed the DSLR version also, which is very useful to see and a reminder how important light and set design really is.
Light and skills are it! Nice work and great to see Phil here!
You guys really need to bring back BFX. this channel is still extremely underrated
How to not get electrocuted while playing with electric lights and water.
You can make a movie in the UK mostly any day you want without spending any money on buckets, hoses and steamers. Be warned though... ...there are one or two days each year when it stops raining. 😜
Wow! This will help me so much in future projects that I'll be doing Thanks!
Yus!!! I was just thinking I needed more Ted in my life. Also that lighting 😍
I just wanted to say, I'm OBSESSED with your channel. You make wonderful content which actually helps a lot. All love and luck for the future 🥰🙏❤🍍
Wow, this was an amazing breakdown! Look forward to the whole podcast!
Thanks for the camera comparison. EXCELLENT!🎬
I loved this episode! So entertaining and the footage looked incredible! Great job!
The Korean Cyberpunk film "Natural City" used water effects to make a couple of the most memorable fight scenes I've ever seen. A lot of high action combat but with actors standing in a couple inches of water with rain effects coming down makes for some big splashes and some great kung fu gunplay.
Thank you SOOO much. I REALLY Appreciate all your hard work.
Great stuff here! On of my favourite channel on YT now 😍 Sense of humor, people and knowledge are excellent! Great job!
More of this please. Fascinating insider tips!!!
Thanks man im always watching your videos youre the best🙏
I’m not a filmmaker, but this is fascinating stuff. 👍🏻

My man, always throwing down. good stuff bro
Insanely good and informative content. Truly creative.
I found your channel today and this is the first video I watched. I'm impressed. Great stuff. And yes, please make more videos like this one. :)
Just awesome tutorial thank you!!
haha unfolding the magic...and every time camera doesn't matter..great idea to boost people like us. Thanks
Very cool episode. I'd love to see more exactly like this, for sure.
Every exterior shot on CSI Miami in front of the police station they would waterdown the concrete before shooting. Made a huge difference to the look and feel. That show was ahead of its time in regards to cinematography, lighting, and color grading for television.
Wonderful as always.
Thank you, never realised the huge effect water played in a scene. I'm definitely using this in my next movie.
Great video Ted and more content like this would be amazing.
Really cool! Thanks, def more tips n pointers!
Wow, I really loved this episode and learned so much. Thanks for creating and sharing. I’m sure that we all would like more of this style of educational content :D
This is so clever and creative. Thanks for that!

great content like always
Very very cool. Interesting, fascinating, inspiring and enjoyable to watch.
Dude, I LOVE this kind of stuff! I just love everything in your channel ! Ahhh! I want to leave work, grab my camera, and start shooting RIGHT NOW!
Great job guys!
Thanks for this Ted! I'm putting rain in everything I film from now on. Oh, plus, this was the video that got me to subscribe to your channel. Cheers.
Love the videos! keep it up!
you always come with the dope information, that reminded me i have a steamer for wallpaper removal i also do home improvement for myself and family lol
Great content. Thanks
This video definitely makes me want to explore the use of water more. That final shot was great. Only weird thing was you could tell it was raining in one plane, as the puddle in the backdrop was static. Great otherwise though, Indy Mogul has been killing it since Ted joined!
More little nuggets! Thank You Ted!
Good stuff. Thanks Ted.
Such an awesome episode!! Never thought of using rain or steam on set of a music video ive directed before but after seeing this episode i def want to try it instead of scheduling a shoot on a rainy day- since that can be hard to plan.
THIS WAS AWESOME. I need to try this.

Awesome. Great tips!
This is awesome !
Great episode. I’d love to have seen more comparison between the Red and Canon images in post. The Canon looked way darker and I wondered if that was a colour correction decision. Always fun to watch your content and super useful tips.
Reflections play a vital role in the depth......Thanks
I love this channel!!!!!!
Thanks guys!!!!!
Last movie I saw that had this effect was the one you guys already showed - Blade Runner 2049, which was amazing. The neon in that film was gorgeous.
Impressive what you can do in an alley with lighting and rain. Looks like a great scene for fighting or karate.👍
Cool video! Now to use all these inside my house to make my photography vlog episodes punchier, crisper and more contrasty!
man you always inspire me for sure. am a filmmaker based in Rwanda(African), and i have learned a lot from your videos.
Wow great content over all Ted! I always knew lighting is key hahahhahaha.... Magic!
I love that you used a cheaper camera under the same lighting conditions for comparison. This just further illustrates the importance of lighting.
Excelente video!
Awesome tips..
good video. good tips. good presenter. good outcome. keep it up. worth a thumbs up.
Man!... This was a bomb for me. Thank you.
Good stuff.... thanks....
Yet another great video. Instant Production Value! Just Add Water! The wetdown does work wonders for urban and sci-fi scenes, but it also makes stuff like vegetation look great. That’s how Indiana Jones jungles look so luscious and steamy.
really glad I found out this channel purely out of luck. Keep it up guys !
Very nice and useful :D
Ted for president? Of our hearts
I like that matrix scene that was chosen for this you tube video. That was the last time I saw this effect one in a movie I watchED:)
Great video!! I thought it was just going to be another video about using luts and a harsh light😂
This channel is still going, crazy
Cool tips! Best line: "I'm the spokesmodel for the HOs."
Just when you think Ted's content can't get any cooler
The last show that I watched use these effects was this show called Indy Mogul. I think it was the episode where they talked about 3 Cheap Water Tricks to Make Any Footage Cinematic 😛
Love it! Where do I get an Indy mogul hat?
You are amazing
Amazing !!! With a some good technique and practice with a 60d can't believe my eyes Thank you ted and ur " voilà" is Perfect ... shoten prod is a french video production 😉
I visited the "Alamo Village"" film set at Brackettville Texas where John Wayne filmed his Alamo. Happened on a small production I think for PBS with 4 or 5 speaking part actors, half a dozen cowboy extras, six or 8 camera and sound crew. But the thing I saw I could use in my own amateur films and low-budget TV commercials- - wetting down the dusty dirt street just enough that it would photograph beige instead of stark white.
Love the design. Where did you get those tubes from?
This is really cool! I still wonder though how one would do this without a spigot handy?
I've been on a lot of urban location shoots and water trucks are used 90% of the time. Most types of road surfaces look washed out (at best gray) without a wet down. I've seen set dressers use push brooms to spread out water so it eliminates any stray dry spots.
Ted thank you, I always wondered why they wet down the streets in movies like Back to the Future. I always wondered if it was to help with exposure in the days night scenes on 35mm film.
Mak’in it Rain!! Great video.

I like this episode
I'd like to get a list of the all the lights/tech you used in this video...
hi first coment hhhhh thinkyou man for thoes tips and tricks love your work am hassen from algeria peace.....
For my most recent short film, "Rain", some of the shots we took we had the PA holding an umbrella over the DP, and I sprayed the umbrella with a handheld weed sprayer. Decently convincing drips, if I do say so! Of course, strapped for time and bouncing around through the city kept us from anything fancy, so most of the actual "rain" was After Effects. Ah, to have had a budget for wider licenses.....
8:57 surprised there's no mention of the strobe lighting to make those water droplets rise back up
I still remember when yall used to do backyard fx

it's like they advanced in their careers or something
I just shot on my 6D for the first time. It's mainly my photography camera, but it worked great. It's missing some auto focus features, but the image quality is amazing. When I put the same lens on any of my crop frames sl2, sl3, t3i the difference is huge. I'd rather look at 6D 720p footage than sl3 4k footage any day of the week. It's like the difference between looking out a perfectly clean and clear pane of glass vs a dirty and hazy one. I think it might be the codecs... because all the cameras can take great stills.
8:15 COOL!!!!
I always assumed that the reason why movies always wet down the ground, is in case it does rain during filming, so the footage won't end up with a continuity problem across multiple takes being cut together.
what brand were the standing tube lighting?
