Both had oxygen sensor problems before 50,000 miles, which is the ONLY car I've ever had that the car would outright die with bad oxygen sensors. Of course, I did it with the “f-ck you” quote coming in about 25% high, not actually saying “you’re a garbage person and I don’t want to catch some long forgotten disease from your filth.” Though I may have said that to a PT driver, and that thing was immaculate.

PT is Platform Tall. I had a 2003 model that had over 140,000 miles when totalled in an accident. Found a 2007 model with 93,000 miles on it, for a thousand bucks four years ago, needed a clutch and Power steering pump. Now have put 37000 miles on this one with very few problems. Would not own an automatic transmission model, but my manual gets 23 mpg around town and 25 doing 85mph on a highway cruise. I'm a mechanic,65 years old and see alot of PTs in bad condition, poorly maintained. But I am happy with mine, have had a good experience.

It needed about R35k spent on a car that could be sold for R80k with everything fixed so I sold it. There were many offers. Very reliable and cheap to maintain. I don't know why they have a bad reputation in the US, here in South Africa, they've just overtaken VW as the second most popular manufacturer in the country.

I don't agree about Suzuki. Suzuki is popular in many countries around the world. And is actually the biggest selling brand in India. They make small, affordable, simple and dependable cars. That's the secret to their success in many parts of the world. The Jimney is a beloved car too.

I would respectfully disagree on Suzuki being a bad car because I know several people who have or have upgraded due to life circumstances. Most of them have nothing but good things to say. He does have a point about parts though and that is something else I have heard.

The Suzuki XL-7 is made in the Canadian General Motor's plant in Toronto, so it is basically a GM vehicle. When I I have difficulty getting a part for my 2008, I will say its for a 2008 Equinox, problem solved. I would suggest you first check the GM part number to make sure it matches correctly.

Scotty you're right to say Chrysler products don't last a long time but Neons outperformed everything in the subcompact class at the time. It was fun to drive like a Mazda 323. It's true. I also had a 95 Voyager with a 3L engine and 3 speed auto. Served my family well and cheap to get fixed and got 20mpg and it lasted until my son crashed it. It was a good van.

My neighbor has two PT Cruisers. As far as I know they're both still running. They sold a lot of them around here but I don't see many of them on the roads anymore. My understanding is there's an issue with oil circulation in the engine that contributes to the reliability problems. It's funny, I have a 2007 Chevy HHR that I bought because it was the only car I could find that my mom could easily get in and out of (She had severe mobility issues towards the end of her life). Haven't had much in the way of problems with the HHR which is now at 110K, although rust from salt on the roads where I live is starting to show up here and there (like the exhaust system). The HHR was basically a station wagon / panel van version of the Chevy Cobalt with 40's retro design features. Chrysler sold twice as many PT Cruisers as Chevy sold HHR's but I regularly see the later on the road. There are at least a dozen different ones running around my area.

In terms of the PT Cruiser, I test drove one in an attempt to replace my 91 Isuzu Rodeo. I forget the year, but what I test drove was a manual transmission version. The test drive included climbing a mountain. As a rare maneuver I had the salesman ride with me. There were a number of things I didn't like about it, but the kicker was it couldn't climb that mountain. I demonstrated to the salesman what my Rodeo was doing and drove the same test track. Glad I never purchased the PT Cruiser and if I sit in another one, it will be too soon.

Not my experience. I took a PT with a 5 speed manual from Denver to Pikes Peak with four fully grown adults (three of which were obese). It was not ideal, and if you have other options I would not recommend it... it is a compact car... but I had no issues with the car or its capabilities of getting me and my cargo from point A to B, and it handled the altitudes fine.

@@xs10z I'm not knocking the model, just the particular vehicle I was test driving. The one I was driving could not drive up a 45 degree incline. The purpose of test driving a vehicle is whether or not it is a good fit for the driver. I suspect there were issues with it that weren't disclosed. Middle TN has some hills, and I was looking at replacing my 91 Rodeo. As it couldn't climb the hill, no way to take it home. I felt this sad for a manual transmission car, not many of them around. Personally, I think the dealer was a crook.

The Pt Cruiser will last as long as a Toyota if you don't expect too much from it and baby it regularly and tell it you love it. Change your coolant and oil and tans fluid regularly , don't over tax it, and above all, keep your expectations in check. It's kinda like driving a 1960's VW bug: Don't expect too much; keep your promises to it; and you wont be left walking.
