Being able to turn around precisely and anywhere is the difference between being comfortable exploring the world, and only feeling comfy in the places you know.
These three methods for turning your bike around are some of the most efficient and helpful skills I have developed over the years. I'd love to hear what you have learnt in your riding that has helped you the most!

Putting the inside foot down, leaning the bike over, revving the engine and then dumping the clutch to powerslide in a half circle... but it usually ends up with the bike falling.

That curb bump is also handy if you are nose first into a slightly downhill parking space. It can help you get the backwards momentum to paddle back enough to get out.

I use the old-fashioned 3 point turn when riding by myself. Why risk dropping my bike when I know I can safely do a turn ? Only my ego suffers ever so slightly. On one of my first rides I found myself doing this on a hill !!!! nearly crapped my drawers because I was alone in a very scary situation. But I figured out that the high side of the hill was my friend; no problem reaching the ground. So, foot down on the high side and worked my way backwards going slightly uphill, but gained enough space to power out of the downhill turn.

@@BrakeMagazine I think TheMNB means a downhill U-turn where the road/trail isn't wide enough for a complete U-turn. In this situation gravity is your enemy. Riding in a rut would make it even more fun. One of my nightmares...

  • 2 ай бұрын

Indeed! I found myself in that situation right in the beginning with 0 skills. Shat me pants, cried a bit, then wrestled the bike around. Luckily I'm a 130 kg gorilla and have a "tiny" cb500x, but it shure felt like a pregnant rhino. (Didn't drop it, btw.)

@@SuperJim1986 Pick a speed around a slow run. Stand up. Drop your arse quickly and smoothly unloading the suspension. As your arse touches the seat, extend into the attack position while initiating a small turn and clamping on the front brake. The bike will stand up on the front wheel and pivot around it 180ish degrees. The rear will fall back to the ground. As it hits and the rear suspension bottoms out, apply decent throttle and ease out the clutch sharpish. This lifts the front. Balance it with judicious application of rear brake and clutch allowing you to ride away smoothly with the front wheel at about waist height.
