Great to watch someone else go through the Johnification of their serve. First thing I saw was soooooo much tension. He has so much power in his body, watching that instant deceleration of the racquet without release during those first serves made my wrist and shoulder ache in sympathy! Step by step, the transformation is in process!

I can see myself reflected in Cenmar. Wish him the best in his pursuit to get the serve technique right and other things to get to the next level. Not easy, but not impossible...if you have a good coach guiding you. You are a lucky guy, Cenmar. Believe me.

It is incredible how little aware we are of our body and the movements we make when we are learning to serve. Even being a beginner you can identify by looking from the outside the mistakes that the video player is making, however, being in his place, surely I would make many of those mistakes.

My biggest problem on my 3.5 iis my take back is too soon, about the same time the tossing ball leaves my hand. Completely engraved in my muscle memory. Any fix for that?

Practice raising the tossing arm while the racquet is pointing to the ground and the playing is stationary. Do this first without releasing the ball, then add the ball placement. Once you have it, try to play the serve. Let me know how it goes. Best, John

Great lesson and a lot of really good pointers, but i was always told that the ball should fall about a foot in front of you from your left foot because the serve should force the body to step into the court and the angle in that position is what is needed, which makes more sense. Its a good exercise for toss practice, but in practical application it wouldnt work. Pro players toss their balls more forward as well to get the t lean towards the ball during the motion. Great stuff tho

Hi Kevin, Thanks for your comments and contribution to the video. I don't disagree with you about the ball placement...it's all about progressions. At this point, Cenmar needs to develop stability while building his skills. Eventually I will guide him to place the ball slightly more forward, so he can lean into contact, but his relationship to the ball at contact will remain very much the same. A toss that far forward is a myth, as the swing can only come down on contact, and the shoulder action will be absorbed from the motion. Thanks again, John

This guy needs a muscle relaxer! He looks so tense even in his motion practice. The more I learn tennis, the more I realize it's just golf with a big, yellow, fuzzy fast moving ball. Loose is fast, fast is far. And in both sports, one's ability to hold approximately 674 swing thoughts in their heads at once is the most impressive part.

I don’t think a muscle relaxer will help. It will be too sedating and lead to mental cloudiness which will prevent him from remembering the steps of his new stroke.

In my experience, it isn't possible to rehabilitate the serve of an adult player who has been using a waiter's tray serve for more than 2 years, especially if they are playing USTA league. Have you ever been successful, John?

  • @PerformancePlusTennis

Hi Eric, Great question. I have had success when the adult is committed to change and stops playing meaningful matches. Few and far between, but it can be done. It will be interesting see how Cenmar evolves...he has a lot of issues and likes to play matches, so we’ll see. Best, John

I have spent 10 years or more trying to improve my serve, without much success. I don't know if I ever had a waiter's tray serve - I don't think so - but probably spent too long building up bad habits. Combination of my lack of ability and coaches who just go through the motions and are not interested in spending the time and energy to correct fundamental mistakes. Probably most adults are kind of happy just to have some small improvement and not into spending hours and hours going right back to basics; it's been hard for me to convince a coach to start with me from scratch, and it seems like now that I have it's already too late. With a couple of exceptions, all of the adults at my club have pretty ugly serves with lots of basic flaws, easily the weakest part of their games, IMO. Other than the coaches at my club and maybe the top couple of players, none of the adults have a decent second serve.
