The fact the host told Dawkins to keep it brief but didn't impose time limits on the religious guy to let him pull his definitions of god etc. out of his arse really questions the host's ability.

@@ManMadeOfIdiot i think the host realised how passionate and eager Dawkins was to speak about evolution and he was afraid that he could be talking about it all night. That's why I think he asked him to give a relatively short answer.

@@RogerCanda he didn't try and define nothing. At all. He said that the answer behind how the universe was formed is simpler than trying to explain how a creator planned all existence, and how that creator came to be itself. I was told exactly the same thing in college, a liberal college from which I was kicked out of for reading my bible in the common, I never force my religious beliefs on anyone, however I always down for a debate or conversation, or things of this nature. It is commanded to spread the word of God. I am no soapbox preacher. But I have read the KJV of 1611 and the NIV cover to cover and I have also read origin of species. Personally I find Darwin’s theory wanting. I believe in micro-evolution not macro. I am an old earth, evolutionist with several twist involved. I was always told neanderthals were our cousins, but that would mean that we have a common ancestor... somewhere. And to answer the survey question, yes it makes the world better, save muslims wanting to kill jews and Jews killing who they believed a false prophet.

@@kainable8769 If you believe in micro evolution, where do you draw the line. Did all cats come from a common ancestor? We know all domestic dogs came from wolves, that happened in our own recorded history. If a pug and and great dane have a common ancestor less then 20,000 years ago, then why do you doubt bigger changes happened over the course of hundreds of millions of years. When all scientists are in agreement that this happened.

I love how Richard admits he was not qualified to answer the question about the Big Bang (not being a physicist). I don't understand why George tried to explain it like he actually fully understood it. Same thing with the Neanderthal thing. You would think Richard, being the evolutionary biologist, would be more than qualified to talk about the evolution of humans, than George who acted like he knew it all. That's where ignorance comes from.

I believe I have a reasonable amount of intelligence and I am struggling to comprehend most of what he is talking about. I am aware of, at least, some of what christians believe in and I can't understand where he is going with his explanations. Imagine if I had no religious knowledge and I was listening to him. I would think he is crazy. And anyone who does what he has been jailed for cannot really have faith. That's probably why he struggles to explain or defend it.

The purpose of something is an opinion which varies as with perspective. The cardinal, I think, is trying to assert that everything has a specific purpose so he can then put forward the idea that the purpose must have been assigned by something in existence before all other matter which he will then say can only be God. Even if things did have an assigned purpose (which seems I think an absurd idea) then a good scientist could still argue that God isn't necessarily that assigner of purpose...

I find watching this "debate" ( "discussion"?) frustrating. To have a philosophic discussion involving such words as "God" or "atheism", doesn't one have to define ones terms? So, the moderator is supposed to keep the debate/discussion undercontrol, by seeing there are intelligent definitions. But it seems this is on T.V., so the purpose is entertainment. So, is a discussion about God a metaphysical discussion? How does the question imping on persons in their struggle to live with pain and uncertainty,? Doesn't one have to assume human beings search for meaning in their lives, so God talk has something to do with such a search?

"What we know by FAITH and what we learn by REASON cannot be in conflict." - St. Augustine of Hippo, Church Father (354AD.) Historically, the Catholic Church has often been a patron of sciences. It has been prolific in the foundation and funding of schools, universities, and hospitals, and many clergy have been active in the sciences. Historians of science such as Pierre Duhem credit medieval Catholic mathematicians and philosophers such as John Buridan, Nicole Oresme, and Roger Bacon as the founders of modern science. Duhem found "the mechanics and physics, of which modern times are justifiably proud, to proceed by an uninterrupted series of scarcely perceptible improvements from doctrines professed in the heart of the medieval schools." Catholic scientists, both religious and lay, have led scientific discovery in many fields. From ancient times, Christian emphasis on practical charity gave rise to the development of systematic nursing and hospitals and the Church remains the single largest private provider of medical care and research facilities in the world. Following the Fall of Rome, monasteries and convents remained bastions of scholarship in Western Europe and clergymen were the leading scholars of the age - studying nature, mathematics, and the motion of the stars. During the Middle Ages, the Church founded Europe's first universities, producing scholars like Robert Grosseteste, Albert the Great, Roger Bacon, and Thomas Aquinas, who helped establish the scientific method. During this period, the Church was also a major patron of engineering for the construction of elaborate cathedrals. Since the Renaissance, Catholic scientists have been credited as fathers of a diverse range of scientific fields: Nicolaus Copernicus (1473-1543) pioneered heliocentrism, Jean-Baptiste Lamarck (1744-1829) prefigured the theory of evolution with Lamarckism, Friar Gregor Mendel (1822-1884) pioneered genetics, and Fr Georges Lemaître (1894-1966) proposed the Big Bang cosmological model, he is the Father of Big Bang Theory. The Jesuits have been particularly active, notably in astronomy. Church patronage of sciences continues through institutions like the Pontifical Academy of Sciences (a successor to the Accademia dei Lincei of 1603) and Vatican Observatory (a successor to the Gregorian Observatory of 1580). As the world's oldest and largest continuously functioning international institution, it has played a prominent role in shaping the history and development of Western civilization we now know today. The Catholic Church is the largest non-government provider of education and medical services in the world. The Catholic Church manages 26% of health care facilities in the world, including tens of thousand hospitals, clinics, orphanages, pharmacies and centers for those with leprosy. The church has always been involved in education, since the founding of the first universities of Europe. It runs and sponsors tens of thousand of primary and secondary schools, colleges and universities throughout the world and operates the world's largest non-governmental school system. In the words of J. L. Heilbron of the University of California, Berkeley, the "Roman Catholic Church gave more financial aid and social support to the study of astronomy over six centuries, from the recovery of ancient learning during the late Middle Ages into the Enlightenment, than any other, and all other institutions." This financial and social support extended also to other branches of scientific inquiry. The Church is patron of Learnings and Social Services for almost 2000 yrs.

Religion came to be based on how people observed the creatures and creations around them, the intelligence of their design and order of things. All these they attribute to a Divine Creator, We call God. People call God by different names and worship him in different ways based on how they observe things. Scientists nowadays, in their ultimate brilliance, try to disprove God. However, until man can provide an irrevocable evidence that Something can come out of Nothing to design an intelligent being and replicate the order of things that we have in the universe today, only then can Man drop the notion of GOD.

Science can't prove there is no creator, it's just obvious that the 3 main religion's are man made.

Science and Faith should be the same thing really, Science continues to battle for evidence based truth and the faith should be in it to do so. Eventually we will get there and non fact based beliefs of gods and such will cease to exist.

pell likes this word sophisticated, it actually means to contaminate something that was pure, not imbue with intelligence. hang on a minute, god gives us a soul? god doesn't give us a soul? which is it? science would like to understand at what point we became "humans", and if a soul does exist we need to know at what point we got it, ie, when did god (?) decide "this new lot gets a soul", even if god exists he does the most illogical crap. what does god want, cos there are easier ways to achieve it than setting this lot of monkeys off on a ride with no map.

Like Wow. If Adam and Eve is just a story and not literally true then the WHOLE Christian religion crumbles. There is no Original Sin meaning there was no need for Jesus to be sacrificed. As an atheist I'm very surprised to hear a Catholic cardinal admit to that so nonchalantly like it doesn't hold the weight of it religion on its shoulders.

Agreed. Many Christians don't really believe in Adam and Eve and true it does negate the need for Jesus.
