3/4 Dan Cruickshank and the Family that built Gothic Britain
• 1/4 Dan Cruickshank an...
First broadcast: Oct 2014.
As good as any Dickens novel, this is the triumphant and tragic story of the greatest architectural dynasty of the 19th century. Dan Cruickshank charts the rise of Sir George Gilbert Scott to the very heights of success, the fall of his son George Junior and the rise again of his grandson Giles It is a story of architects bent on a mission to rebuild Britain. From the Romantic heights of the Midland Hotel at St Pancras station to the modern image of Bankside power station (now Tate Modern), this is the story of a family that shaped the Victorian age and left a giant legacy.

Dan Cruickshank is my favourite TV presenter. He is a very rare commentator in today's media as he is not full of annoying hyperboles which is so endemic in today's broadcasting; he doesn't overwhelm the viewer, doesn't force the point, rather just lets everything speak for itself and I really appreciate Dan for his laid-back but effective, unobtrusive manner - thank you so much for a Wonderful series.

He is wonderful, I have all of his books, and he has helped me over the years in my history research and studies. I wish I had his work when I was doing my history studies.
My favourite Cruikshank documentary
I love listening to Dan. I would love to go on a trip with him 😊
Scott restored most of England's cathedrals; from Chichester to Chester, Oxford to Ely.
Good old Desperate Dan---none better, if his arms were fastened to his sides, he'd be speechless.

Dan twice says that Queen Anne was early 17th century. Tut tut.

I suspect he meant to say early 1700s not 17th century.

You misunderstood what he said - "it was called the Queen Anne revival ... Queen Anne really is an earlier style, earlier 17th century" - meaning that what we call Queen Anne style, was actually something that had been in use during the early 17th century, but only became popular in the 18th century during the reign of Queen Anne. Do you see what he was getting at? Sorry for being a few years late, only just read the comments section.
Dear me, the great, great great granddaughter is awful
