3/13 Mark and Carrie: Welcome to ZOOM University

Mark Blyth, political economist at Brown's Watson Institute, and Carrie Nordlund, political scientist and associate director of Brown's Master of Public Affairs program, share their take on the news.
On this episode: digital living in the age of Coronavirus; the Trump administration's bizarre, belated crisis response; making sense of the Fed's $1.5 trillion injection; the semi-forgotten Democratic Primary; what the Coronavirus is revealing about our fractured society and economy; and TV shows and movies to binge if you find yourself spending a little more time at home this Spring.

Sadly, no. It won't change much at all. The only organisation that can affect real change is government. Not only have citizens been pushing for smaller government, they've got it. All the power that exists in US government is in the hands of corporations and vested interests that have been pushing for, believe it or not, bigger government in the sense that the government does what they say. Status quo ain't going away because they won't let it. It works perfectly well for them. Always the first to get tax money to bail them out, the last to pay for that protection via taxes. They pay "donations" (bribes) instead of tax. Much cheaper, they get what they want, when they need it and the people can go to hell. Where exactly do you see this great change coming from?

My wife's a nurse down in Houston and I haven't gotten a dwelling permit yet so I'm sitting here up in iceland. Last week they announced that the schools in Houston are closing, so now my wife needs to take care of my stepson instead of showing up to work to be on a shift for the E.R. Closing the schools and daycare centers might cause a hit on the hospitals on the employee side at the same time as a pandemic hits.

Problem with schools is, they're pretty much pathogen distribution centers. Keeping kids in school means they're going to spread it classroom by classroom, instead of friend group by friend group. In France there was a study about influenza epidemics slowing down during and after school breaks. So closing schools makes sense, but it does put on additional stress on parents.

I am in Hangzhou, Zhejiang China. Life is getting back to normal because the local government prepared for the virus before case numbers were still low, by locking it down, after a couple of weeks, case numbers are on the down low. Lesson, you can't have posers in Government, too many times people all over the world, allow such people to walk in government for we don't know what a "qualified" politician is.
