Some systems use the space between the inner diameter of the casing & the outer diameter of the tubing, called the annulus, to conduct the well bore fluids to the Christmas tree.

what is tubing and casing? Does it need to be replaced over time? Can it be reused?

+Roo M Casing is the string component that is drilled and cemmented and usually they are hanged with some sort of slips (you can see canh seal assy also for casing packoffs when the hanger type is mandrel). The last casing is called Production string/ production casing. This is also cemmented. Inside the prod. string you wanna install tubing string, which is not cemmented. Tubing is the "casing" that conducts production fluids from the bottom of the well to the surface, through the xmas tree (in natural production). Tubing is not cemmented because fluid flow corrodes it so it must be able to be changed. You'd also want to change the tubing to one of a different diameter to adapt it to the production flow rate). Casing string will never be replaced/pulled out. Tubing must be replaced and maybe reused if downgraded.
