I've also seen those other videos and thought that running the cable through a pvc pipe would vastly improve the performance of the method. Thanks for doing the experiment and sharing. Great with the frame sitting alone on the garage floor, but probably of little value to someone dealing with the frame of a fully assembled truck or car. The 90 mile/hour wind of a leaf blower is also a great hack. You definitely get a thumbs up.

Thanks Chris. I've heard from subscribers it's better to use a chimney sweep rod and I believe it.

A job like this is perfect for a small electric pressure washer with one of those cheap drain jetter kits on amazon as a pre/post wash. I've just done this on my truck and it flushes out practically all of the dirt, grime, lifted paint, and even some of the scale. Then hit it with the chain and break up the heavy scale.Then follow up with the jetter to flush it all out. After you're finished, you have a good surface for final degreasing and rust conversion. The best nozzle tip to use is the rotating jetter.

I Play To Bag Thanks. Many of my subscribers have suggested using a chimney cleaner instead of the chain I made, but it’s the same idea. I think the chimney cleaner will stand up better over time. Good luck!

I've been using the eastwood internal frame coating, its been holding up great so far, couple of years now. When you say good for another 40 years thats very reassuring :D !

brilliant! Thanks for that, I finally found something new and useful on YT.

I just did this exact thing to my 95 Jeep YJ but I had to make a few adjustments. This is what I had to change, I used 1/2 plastic water line (2- 10' lengths and one coupler), I used the proper glue to hook them together with the coupler, I shoved that from the back side until it hit the front of the frame then cut the pipe about 16 inches or so behind from the back of the frame opening. I used approx. 8 inch piece of 1/4" plastic covered cable to loop through the chain I bought, My chain was very similar to the chain in this video. I attached this piece with the chain onto the end of a 3/8" plastic piece of cable with one 3/8" cable clamp. I used the washers like in this video but before threading my 15 Ft. of cable through the plastic pipe I slipped in about a foot of cable into the plastic pipe then coated the rest with grease. Tighten down that cable clamp as tight as you can. After I fished the chain and pipe under the back shackle tube in the frame (My frame was rusted out at this point or I wouldn't have been able to get this into my frame) I shoved it up until the chain was at the front of my frame. Taking caution to stop if it hung up and then shoving it back up and pulling out until it became unstuck I was able to clean entire length of the frame 5-6 times but it came out of my Drill chuck many times and hung up in my frame often, I drilled 2-1/2 drain holes into the bottom of each frame side at the frame shackle mounts on each end of the flat section of frame allowing a drain so water from now on can drain out of my frame where before there was no drain at all in my frame. I then cleaned out he rust dust with a water hose and air dried it, this was my only option. In the end the inside of my 95 YJ frame was as clean as I could ever have gotten it and I was very happy with the results. This video helped me VERY much in me being able to clean the inside of the frame, Now I can use an internal frame coating spray. This man is redoing a Bronco and his "tool" was perfect for that but these are the changes I had to do for it to fit into my smaller Jeep frame and I hope this helps anybody that wants to clean there Jeep frame inside. I thank you for this video and I can not say thank you enough for this SUPER idea.

Great video. I have a trailer with 40mm box chassis. I am definitely going to try this. There are so many companies trying to sell us chemicals that attack rust but then can't be removed from inside the chassis. I love the more mechanical methods as they actually remove it first.

Try a fiberglass dryer vent cleaning rod or chimney sweep kit rod. More stability and strength

this helped me restore the frame of my 65´ corvette. BTW, great channel, great community as well!

Another great video. Need to do that to my Bronco. Lots of rodent nesting material hidden in there. Would have been nice to see a close up of the final tool build with washers, have links to materials at Home Depot or Lowe's and chain length (# of links). Still will put together one in October, just would prefer not to spend money on the wrong materials. So $40 for a tool of the right build is not crazy but you are right there is not a huge reuse once it's clean. Can't wait for the Eastwood sealer vid. Thanks for all your hard work and knowledge.

I’ve just found this video and will be heading to bunnings as soon as I get a chance. I’m thinking I could get a cheap chimney sweep kit online if bunnings doesn’t have something and adapt the end of it to be able to have some small chain on it instead of the nylon brushes they come with, or I’ve also found a company that does stainless steel brush heads for boiler pipe cleaning which could work pretty well too.

Dave F. Hi Dave. Yes I use metal prep and etch from Home Depot all the time. Many subscribers have suggested using a chimney sweep instead of the cable. It doesn’t bind as much.

I’ll see if my husband will do this for our Isuzu pickup utility , it may be a bit tricky because the frame is a S shape. It high over the back axle then slops downwards.

Great video! I have an older galvanized boat trailer with 2x4 frame rails and I'm looking for solutions for how to remove the heavy scale rust as the previous owner dunked it a lot in salt water. I think your method might work out great. Loved the leaf blower trick too!

Great idea - thanks for sharing. I recently got a Jeep TJ needing to have rust scale removed from inside the frame. I'll try your method. (Although I'm not sure how to access the back part of the frame on the TJ, might have to drill some holes.) Also a guy who runs a TJ restoration business near me, clued me in on using a product called Fluid Film, which he cuts with WD-40 and regularly sprays on the frame and under-body of all his vehicles. For application he uses the sort of hand pressurized plastic pump sprayer people typically use to apply lawn care products. The frames and under-bodies of his Jeeps are immaculate in terms of rust, and this is in Chicagoland, winter salt rust capital of the country. :)

@@MattsGarage, agreed about oil and rust protection. I learned that from my 1985 CJ7, which for many years had a small but annoying oil leak, causing oil to get thrown around under the midsection of the vehicle. While the rest of the CJ has sadly rusted away, the frame and underbody receiving the oil coating, once the oil/grime is wiped away, looks like the day it came from the factory. So this time around I'm definitely going to coat the underside and frame of my TJ regularly with some sort of oil type spray. Because I'd rather have some grime/dirt than rust which has previously attacked my vehicles.

Excellent, although could use heavier cable, and the pvc tube is a must otherwise cable will twist up and jam.

They make wire brushes that will do the same thing. I have seen them at HomeDepot. Great idea !!!!!

Thanks David. It was a combination of sources. 1) I saw this video: kzread.info/dash/bejne/pnuryLukhMe1ibg.html 2) I read on some forum about using a leaf blower 3) I thought about the problem with the twisting and came up with the PVC idea. I can't take credit for the idea but I will take credit for making it look good ;-)

I need to do this to my superduty but I am thinking to just hit it with cosmoline as is. That should keep the rust from progressing for a while.

I would treat it with Ospho (metal prep and etch at Home Depot) and then dry it out before you hit it with the cosmolene. Convert it before Lenore you encapsulate it.

Would this work inside of rocker panels?

I dont know but I would think a spring steel rod of about 1/4"x the same length you had would work a lot better than twisted cable and with smaller 1/8" case harden chain links.

I have a 2009 4Runner, and I want to fully redo the frame and metal parts. It has some thick coating on it, but I will be stripping it off, and giving it a proper rustproof coating. My concern is the inside of the frame. Since this cannot be seen, nor can I clean it out properly, Im not sure how to do this so I can spray it. I cant take the frame apart, so what can I do? Because from what Im aware, you need to clean off the rust inside before applying any sprays - because if you don't, then you'll just trap in the moisture even more, rusting it out faster.

They have products like cavity wax that might work. I’m not sure how you get in there but a petroleum based product that will run out might be your best best.

Suspension is going to be bone stock. Everyone is lifting their broncos these days so I'm going in a different direction. The gears are pretty low I think so if a lift is desired later, it won't be too much of a hassle.

My problem is a tad different. I have steep bends in the frame rails around the back wheels. Plus, I wont be removing the bumper, thus meaning no pvc pipe to use for me. I wonder if it would still work with no pvc? Also , what size cable are you using?

peter davies I think the flaw is that the frame flexes in normal use so even if you got a tight fit initially, after use then small voids would form and it’d be worse because there would be less air flow to evaporate what lever water gets in. Just my theory. Maybe it works perfectly.

Skookum as frig! So how bad was the inside before? Mine is packed with mud in a lot of places and I've been trying to figure out a good method. Will definitely give this a try. 😉

Spend a little more money and by a drain eel that is made for rotating then you can reuse it.

Could you do that without taking off the body?

86 ChevyMane it depends on whether you have a straight shot into the frame rails. If you have to turn any corners to get in then it might not work.

why not use the fiberglass rods from a dryer vent cleaning kit instead of a wire.. Its flexible enough but shouldn't coil up like a nylon coated cable..

Instead of wire rope, why dont you use something like a metal bar? It is little bit elastic + won't tear off so easy like it happened to you on the drill end
