$3,000 Bargain Sailboat for Sale! | EP 57
We spotted this sailboat for sale a few weeks ago and wanted to know what was under the winter wrapping... turns out it was a very popular (almost 1,000 made) Grampian 26. We are delighted to find it in quite good shape despite being wrapped up and on-the-hard for 7 years. Check it out!

Actually some of these older boats deserve the time, unfortunately, people want A/C, dishwasher, washer/dryer, 4 car garage, electric sails, cruise control and absolutely no working on the boat. If any boat requires any work, NEXT! For something they may use every other weekend through the summer only.

maybe this year for me from the Lakehead.
In their day, these boats were rockets, particularly in light conditions. I crewed on one in 1972. The local PHRF handicap committee in Montreal kept increasing our rating until ours matched that of the C&C 30. Even still, we won every race but the last one that season. Our local hot shot, who raced an Alberg 30, called them ugly. My response was, "Yes, but ugly boats go fast."

Captain Q Thank you for this episode. Great foundation to a perfect custom build. This one is making my mouth water. Work and cash, this would be an incredible boat. These are completely capable. Well, as capable as the sailor sailing it.
Great deal providing sails are good? If not: that's another 3-3500 bucks on top of 1500-2500 for reliable outboard. add another 2000 for basic electronics. Add another 2500-3000 for hot water for sink, shower, water pump, water lines, and larger water holding tanks. When done: I see a 10-12000 boat that will safely and comfortably take me anywhere. Not a bad price for a reliable boat. Reasonable and cheap investment for fun times. Sweet boat!
@crankyoldguy2

He didn't show us the head, but my guess is that, because the boat is not large, it's 'good luck' if you want to put a shower (maybe also a sink0 in the space and still be able to sit on the pot. In a boat this small, water is pumped at the tap most of the time, so a water pump would be a luxury that you COULD add without much effort. The boat was manufactured prior to the mandates concerning waste water, so I'll bet there's a direct head, not a chem toilet or holding tank. Et cetera. A great place to start, and as you suggest, it will 'need some work'.

A quick correction on Dirk's name, it's Dirk, not Dick. I grew up in Oakville and my family owned a Grampian 26, a fairly rare one as the hull was chocolate and the topsides were cream. The name was Irish Coffee. I knew Dirk's son as he was friends with the owners of the sailing store I worked at in high school. Great boat and we did very well racing her. In the summer I lived on the boat down in the harbour, many great memories. I would buy it in a heart beat, especially for that price, if I could get it down to Belize without breaking the bank.

1. A little bit off topic but you have wonderful transition music. somebody must be a jazz aficionado. 2 .Depth sounders of the type shown here could also give you a clue as to the type of bottom, a hard or soft bottom, based on the width of the indicator illumination of the face of the "dial".
@YachtHunters
2 жыл бұрын
I never thought of that but what I did like about it was that you didn’t have to stare at it to know what the water depth was you just knew on the “clock face quote of the depth sounder roughly what the depth was at a glance. It was very convenient and somehow more relevant to what was going on with the water. Just reading a number makes you have to think for a second how that relates to you. Watching a flashing line slowly decreasing or increasing tells you that you’re on the right or wrong track

Nice boat
My previous boat was outboard powered and a similar type and size though different design my children my wife and I enjoyed the heck out of that boat and did some serious miles and long holidays away, my current boat is diesel inboard and I miss the outboard no heat or smells in the cabin and repairs were so easy particularly as when all else fails taking the outboard to the mechanic is allot cheaper though as I was poorer then I would just buy old second hand outboards when they wear out. An awesome system only downside was outboards could be a bit poor at handling hobby horsing so an occasional headwind through a tight channel could get difficult.
I knew a couple that lived on a Grampian 26 and ended up taking it South from Boston to Florida 25 years ago or so. Their Grampian 26 had a 2nd forward cockpit as well..I think their cockpit was smaller and the cabin a little further AFT to accommodate the forward cockpit. I don't remember if they had an outboard or inboard. I recognize the hull shape. Their hull was red.

Apart from looks only its mother could love, the downside to such a tall and boxy cabin is the very narrow side decks. As the great Uffa Fox said: "If you want to stand up go up on deck".
That is a REALLY lovely boat. I'd buy it in a heartbeat, but it'd cost an arm and a leg to transport across the continent :)

Small sail boats are very interesting to me because you get to see designers earn their crust with some brilliant out of the box thinking. Big boats are nice but they very quickly become meat and two veg with respect to design.
This is a much more desirable boat than something like a Tartan 30' or Cal 29'. IF you are comfortable with an open outboard pushing it along. On this vessel I would suggest only like a 3HP outboard and the reason being that you can tuck that little engine into a cockpit locker once you clear the channel outbound easily. Just enough to do berthing maneuvers in calm weather but awaiting good weather to berth is nothing new. This would be an excellent boat for many. A couple and a few small toddlers is a reach though. The toddlers would love it but ,,,,, Solar shower on deck to rinse off a sea water wash would be perfect. To me this is a most affordable Caribbean cruiser for the young and adventurous. You could actually circumnavigate on something of this size easily as many have done it on far smaller with no auxiliary power at all. Many have been lost doing that too. Not every sailor is Lynn or Larry Pardee.
I'd give twice that much if it came delivered to Kona. Plus I'd provide return air fare. We're very limited down here.
