*2ZZ Swapped* Toyota MR-S vs Honda Accord - 2ZZ vs K24 Rematch

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

A few weeks ago I compared my Honda Accord with a 2ZZ-GE powered Toyota Celica. Well when the owner of a 2ZZ swapped Toyota MR-S got in contact to film a video, I couldn't say no!

As an MR-S owner, I feel your points accurately describe some of the difficulties with it. That's why my other car, my daily, is an AWD GS 350. That way I get something great for two distinct use cases. But lemme tell you.. boooooooooooooy is the MR-S a fun car to drive. It's the best handling & probably most fun car I've ever driven personally.

My first drive in my 2zz mr-s was a 10 hour drive when i flew in to buy it. After about 3 hours of driving my legs were numb lol. Definitely not a long trip car. But as far as every day car, this is perfect for me. I drive it everyday to work, i pick up my daughters from school in it, one at a time of course, i use it to haul stuff from home depot! I mean this thing gets used as a truck and a bus everyday 😂. My idea when i biught the car was to have it as a weekend/track car. It became my daily simply because i enjoy driving it so much and my “daily” cars have become secondary cars. My current daily is a 2014 acura mdx before that was an infiniti Q50S hybrid, and before that was a 2004 subaru sti. My lil mr-s has over 240k miles now and all my other cars barely got any miles put on them. I guess my priority is fun when i drive

Yeah totally get that man. It's super fun but yeah I do quite a lot of road trips so having a second more comfortable for me would be a must. Or (and this is the point I've made in a lot of my videos) I could just make my daily more fun to drive and faster, which is what I've done and that's good enough for me

Yes agreed - the Accord is a better car overall, but it needs mods to be as exciting to drive as the Celica. If the Accord had the K20A instead of K24 (to sound more like the 2ZZ) it wouldn't even be a comparison. The accord would have all the thrills with none of the drawbacks.

@@KiwiCarLife actually stock mr2 spyders are very soft and so quiet you can barely hear them. Mine has progressive lowering springs that were too soft for me so I cut mine to lower the car more for my fender flares. Now it rides more like a modern sports car with the soft part of the spring absorbing bumps and the stiff part for 0 lean. My lotus type exhaust has the perfect sound ratio with virtually no drone and it’s loud enough when you want it to be with a quality exhaust note. Ps my spyder has been my daily for 6 years. I don't know why Toyota didn't release a factory 2zz 6sp manual version of the MR2. Everything was there and in my opinion it was a failed opportunity. I use to work for Toyota just as the last gen MR2 was being discontinued yet thankful got a chance to drive it. I was so very impressed the the steering and handeling yet disappointed with the shitty single clutch automated manual that would take a weekend to shift and wouldn't allow a launch. As for the one you'r reviewing it seems like the shif time are really hurting the acceleration, in addition to rebuilding the syncros, I think a lighter flywheel will help shifts, seems like the problem is fast shifts aren't possible or smooth cause the revs don't drop quick enough to match when going into the next gear causing extra wear on the syncos also.

For all of the conversation about making the Accord a better sports car, you spend very little time on the sort of twisty roads where a sports car would actually shine. After watching a few of your videos now, I've noticed that aside from comfort, straight-line performance seems to be your primary consideration as to how the cars stack up. Not that there is anything wrong with this, but you might consider reframing some of your talking points to match your focus.

The reason I just do pulls up and down onramps is because I try keep my videos under about 10 minutes, which means I really only have about 2 and a half minutes of driving to cram in all my points. And I've come to the conclusion that the most interesting content is just hearing the engine being taken to redline through multiple gears frankly. Corners are fun, but most of the roads around here you can't fully unleash the engine between corners as they're too narrow and windy which I've found doesn't make for terribly interesting content. That said I do appreciate that you've taken the time to give constructive feedback rather than just abusing me hahah

Trying to compare a 20+ year old car in not so good shape to your much newer Honda is dumb. Of course the Celica is going to make rattles and not be a cozy as the newer car. And you beat the snot out of the Celica on the test drive and baby your own car.

  • @KiwiCarLife

And your comments sound very Toyota fan boy! ;) I just really value cars that are well rounded. As you've admitted, Toyotas are rattly and impractical, so while they might have great engines and be good fun to drive on a twisty road, cars like the celica and mr-s really are single purpose vehicles. Hondas naturally tend to be more practical and better built, and equally fun to drive which is why I prefer them (and so does most of the car community hence why they tend to be more expensive these days). But find me a toyota with a great engine and transmission, beautiful interior and comfortable but sporty ride and I'll think it's the best car ever! I just haven't driven one yet. Putting price aside, the integra IS better than the celica, the accord IS better than the camry, the S2000 IS better than the MR-S and so on... I think my thoughts are justified. Now ofc when you bring price into it that changes things, but with these comparisons we're only looking at the cars.

@@KiwiCarLife What about the Toyota ARISTO twinTurbo ? Order Toyota chaser 1jz? Those are proper turbo charge 4 doors that your Accord could not dream of bearing ? Caldina GT4 ? The MR2 turbo is definitely better than the S2000. Toyota has a much larger pro folio than Honda and make better cars than Honda. Celica GT4 turbo ? What honda is better then that ? You’re really over selling your family sedan last time I checked sports cars or about driving not comfort. How about you test your record against the Lexus ISF V8 ?

This MR2 with its mid engine set up is a much better handling and track car then your a accord this is basically a small NSX it’s supposed to be about driving fell not comfort how can it be a knock against the car that’s not designed for a specific thing in the first place ? The 08 TSX in the US only revved to 7,600 rpm’s though. Still had the classic I-Vtec lift which was nice, but it only lasted for 1,600 rpm’s which was kinda dumb.
