[2h] The Austell Wye Part 1/2, NS East End and Atlanta North Districts, 05/21/2016 ©mbmars01

Ойын-сауық

More than 30 trains in half a day passed the famous Austell wye during this visit. In Austell, GA, the East End District of the Norfolk Southern Alabama Division merges into the Atlanta North District of the NS Georgia Division. The East End brings traffic from and to Birmingham, AL, and the northern section of the Atlanta North District goes up to Chattanooga, TN. The Whitaker Intermodal Yard in Austell and the Inman Yard in Atlanta feed these main lines with many interesting trains. It's definitely one of the "railfanning Meccas" in Georgia. One particular special in this movie is the appearance of NS's heritage unit "Lackawanna" (NS # 1074) in the colors of the former Delaware, Lackawanna and Western. This engine appeared as the mid-DPU of southbound manifest NS 154. [© 2016 MBMARS Productions. Exclusive rights for KZread channel "mbmars01" only.]

You have caught two NS Conrail C40-8W units with P5 horns, NS 8319 and NS 8338. That's cool! They're my favorite in this video! NS 8323 is another Conrail C40-8W unit with a P5 horn, too.

I have located the spot you are filming from on Googlemaps. Your comments about the number of trains in half a day has really sparked my interest in that location. Since I live in SC, a trip to Austell is not out of the question. Maybe I'll see you there. I've been watching a lot of your videos, you do an excellent job!

Austell is certainly a nice spot to visit as a railfan and Birmingham and Chattanooga aren't far away either. The entire triangle is very busy with rail traffic. Thanks! I'm glad you liked watching the videos :)

Austell is busy and a good place to watch trains. However, for filming it's not optimal as spots are narrow and (car) traffic can be annoying. NS police is very active out there (because of the intermodal yard) and, strictly spoken, the wye itself is not accessible to railfans. I also have to say that there are often incidents with "railfans" who do all kinds of stupid things near the tracks.

I've been considering starting my own railfan experience. The BNSF runs through the farm, therefore I would be on my own property and up close and personal. A farm to market road splits the pastures so I can either film at the railroad crossing or I can go towards the back of one of the pastures and film.

SO I WENT TO THE IMMAN YARD GOT THEIR AT 5:30 PM AND TRAINS WERE GOING BOTH DIRECTIONS. HOPEFULLY NEXT TIME I GO I CAN GET AT LEAST 5 TRAINS AT THE AUSTELL WYE.

Well, since there were some lines closed in the east and south because of the hurricane, traffic may have been exceptionally slow in the last few days.

Great camera shots! I notice that you do a lot of fading in and out and overlapping shots. Is that a feature of your Panasonic camcorder? Or do you use special editing equipment to make that happen? I like those special effects.

Another place to go from Blue Ridge! Cool. What camera eqpt would you recc? I should have made videos of the double diamonds in Marion, OH when I lived in Ohio where north south routes were dominated by CSX and NS and the old east west Conrail line.

noticed FEDEX' new logo...at least first I've seen of it. still curious about the chicken coop; how often does it receive trains of grain and is it a year-round operation? I marvel at the rail traffic in GA....topped off with Folkston. We don't have anything close to that here. Now for the kicker: how much trouble would it be to insert a google map of the area you're railfanning each time? Thank you.

  • @mbmars01

Which chicken coop do you mean? The feed mill in Comer, GA? As far as I know they work at the mill continuously. I don't know how many train loads per week they receive, maybe one or two? But there is also this local train A749 that "feeds" them and that runs on an almost daily basis I guess. I'm not living very close, so I really have no clear overview about their operations. Your idea to include a map is good - I've already thought about it by myself - but it costs extra time and I'm already very short of time anyway. Since my notes always contain the location, you can easily look it up, though.

I love the KCS locomotive colors, they are so neat looking. If you don't mind, I assume you are using a camera phone, how much did it cost and what brand, as i am in the market of looking to get one, and don't have much experience with them?

+Larry R Wendell Jr It's not the camera of a phone that I use. It's the Panasonic camcorder HC-V550, which was about $350 when I bought it couple years ago.
