2D1N MOUNT KINABALU Climb (March 2023) ⛰️- FIRST TIME Journey, Experiences + Hiking Package & Tips!

Did not expect this level of pain and self-doubt when attempting to conquer this highest peak in S.E.A. Who knew that climbing a mountain could bring about personal reflection and growth?? 😆 Nonetheless, I'm glad I did this with these 3 other fellows on 25 & 26 March - at least the pain was peppered with laughter and fun. :)
Stay tuned for PART TWO!

    Hello there! Thanks for watching the video & joining @oheyjelly KZread fam! 😊 Great job on making the climb to Panalaban base! It's definitely not a basic climb for most, and we trained really hard/intense in the two weeks leading up to our trip. I did stairs, squats, inclined walks/runs on the treadmill & a few hikes at Bukit Timah hill. Not to mention with our full backpack load to get accustomed to the weight - since no porter. 🫠 I'd say the focus is on breath regulation & listening to your body too. Give the climb another shot after you feel more prepared? The view at the top is amazinggg. 💪🏻

    With the benefit of hindsight, what are the items that you could have included/excluded in your packing list? What type of physical training that you have done before the climb KK and what more you wished you could have done better in order to enjoy the climb better?

  • @oheyjelly

    @oheyjelly

    7 ай бұрын

    Hello there! Good questions which we also reflected upon & shared a bit on in part 2 of the Kinabalu vlog 🤗. Items i would have included: 1) Insulator layer e.g. fleece jacket or thin down jacket. I left it out thinking that it'll take up space in my backpack & that it wouldn't be so cold. 2) Extra change of clothes for base camp - because staying in sweaty clothes make you ultra cold 🥶. 3) Heat packs for the freezing hands Items i would have excluded: 'Cooling' wet wipes that lower your skin temperature - i use this in tropical countries...but normal wet wipes will do! Physical training: Stairs climbing, squats, lunges, step-ups/downs, running long distance for stamina building, hiking at Bukit Timah Hill. I would recommend more endurance training and also strengthening of upper body because carrying your backpack (and water weight) is really quite tiring. 😐😐 Oh yes, perhaps two hiking sticks instead of one? It helps with weight distribution as you descend.

  • @oheyjelly

    @oheyjelly

    Жыл бұрын

    Hello! I would say that first 3km or so is like Bukit Timah's terrain during our training. However, as you go up the 4 - 6km, and then summit to 8.5km....the terrain gets more challenging and some parts require upper body strength i.e. climbing and pulling on ropes. Other factors such as weight you're carrying, weather elements, altitude etc, changes how you feel as you climb. Keep in mind that we didn't film much for the parts we had to use both hands & legs, or when it was super dark out. 🤣🤣 Overall, i'd say...training is definitely needed before the actual climb. At Kinabalu, listen to your body and take breaks, drink water, inform your guide if you feel sick etc. Altitude sickness is real and every one reacts differently to it. We've noticed climbers who reacted adversely along the way. 😮‍💨

    Hello there! @tL-bw2bl Thanks for dropping by & watching our vlogs! I wouldn't say Mt Kinabalu was crowded, but you can definitely expect some queueing & waiting at the summit sign because everyone wants a picture with it. 🤭 Our backpacks were about 8kg per person, which includes about 3.5kg of water. • @tzew

    @tzew

    @lilianchan9609 Hello there, I'd say the terrain feels similar but the scale is very different. On hindsight, we felt that our pre-training at Bukit Timah Summit Steps, Rengas Path, Cave Path and main upwards concrete slope path to summit are all useful loops. We did 3 such loops every time, but the actual KK ascend/ descent can easily be a minimal 10-15 loops one shot, which can be tough especially if you are carrying your own gear. Thank you for watching our vlog, hope you found it useful and do share with us your post-climb experience!
