2D Animations in Augmented Reality Using After Effects and Adobe Aero

In this tutorial, I will show you how to incorporate 2D animations into an AR scene using After Effects and Adobe Aero.
STEPS :
1. Create animation in After Effects (with a transparent background.)
2. Export the comp as a PNG Sequence (or animated GIF)
3. Compress the PNG sequence into a ZIP file
4. Export the audio (optional)
5.Transfer the files to the mobile device.
6. Create a new scene in Adobe Aero
7. Import the PNG sequence ZIP file
8. Add a TAP behavior to the PNG sequence
9. Add a PLAY IMAGES actions to the behavior
10. Add a PLAY AUDIO to the behavior and select the audio file.
11. Press Preview to see the animation.
TIP :
In order to avoid playback lag, optimize your files as much as possible. Keep the dimensions of your animation as small as possible (while maintaining fidelity) and keep the FPS as low as possible.

Thanks for sharing! When I bring my assets into Aero the colour is so off...Have you experienced this before? Or do you know what’s causing this/ how to fix it?

I have seen that happen. Normally, it's related to the roughness of the material. If you import an image (JPG, PNG, or PSD) directly into Aero, it has a roughness of 50%, which means that it's a little bit shiny. Aero includes an overhead light in its scenes, so that reflects off the slightly shiny surfaces and lesses the saturation. The way around this, it to adjust the roughness to 0% in a 3D application like Adobe Dimension or Blender. Then, export the object as a GLB and bring it into Aero. Hope that helps.

Thanks for the demo. Can you export animated scenes to USDZ?

Yes. Under the share icon there is an option to export as USDZ or .Real file.

I love your AR and your tutorial. If I can ask Heather have you had any issues with frame rate/audio syncing? Im working with Adobe Character Animator and After Effects as well as Aero. For some reason I keep getting frame drops when exporting where the audio doesn't sync quite right when I import into Aero. If you've had this issue Id love to know how you navigated around it. Thank you!

Thank you so much. I haven't done a ton of synchronized (animation/audio) pieces. But, I have noticed that any sort of drift can intensify with time and file size. So, keeping audio and animation clips short and sweet, typically works better. Also, if Aero is trying to process a ton of stuff at the same time, that can cause performance issues which will create latency problems. Best of luck with everything!

@@DunawaySmith Thank you so much Heather, I am grateful you took the time to write but I also appreciate your knowledge and experience. I took your advice and it actually helped a great deal. I wasnt able to solve all of the problems but keeping the clips short and the files small did help. Thank you!

If I make something and want others to access the AR, how do I do that? Is there a way to geographically pin an AR so that anyone with phone app can see it?

There is a share button in Aero. You can either send a URL or a QR code. You can read more here: helpx.adobe.com/aero/using/share-ar-creations.html#:~:text=You%20can%20share%20your%20AR,Share%20a%20link%20%3E%20Create%20link. There is not a way to drop a geo-pin in Aero, as of right now. Perhaps, in the future.
