{284} RCD SNUBBER Circuit | What is Snubber Circuit in SMPS and How to Calculate

Ғылым және технология

in this video i explained What is RCD snubber circuit, why it is used in smps switch mode power supply circuit & how it works in high frequency transformer in switch mode power supply. circuit is explained in english language. Educational tutorials on power electronics RCD (resistor capacitor diode SNUBBER Circuit | What is Snubber Circuit and How to Calculate | Explained in Urdu. during switching the high frequency transformer the voltage stress on collector of the mosfet or transistor is double to the vdc and Leakage inductance spikes are also increase, these can be minimized by addition of a snubber circuit (a capacitor, resistor, and diode combination) connected to the transistor collector to positive supply line. it damps the oscillation effect in the off time period of the switching cycle. in this way the the reverse voltage generated in off time are diverted to this RCD snubber circuit so the voltage stress is minimized and the huge power loss in fall time is reduced to a negligible value.

Tf is the delay in fall time which is from datasheet and watch once again video to know how does the capacitor discharges during transistor ON time. But I still did not get answers for 1st question and 3rd question. Here I have added another question. 5. In the formula R1 = Ton_min / (3*C1), What is 3? Are 3.13, 6T and 3 assumption? If yes, what is the base for these assumptions? Only Haseeb can answer these questions

How did you consider 3.13 in the Ipeak calculation? 2. How did you consider 3 in the R1 calculation? 3. How did you consider 6 while calculating transistor power dissipation after adding snubber circuit? The explanation of the circuit and calculations are awesome

Reply about the 2, the voltage in capacitor is reduced almost to zero after three times time constant (3RC), because U*e^(-3) and the energy of capacitor in RCD is expected to release over during T_on.

Reply about the 1, 3.13 should be related to topology of the circuit, only if you can calculate the I_pk and take some margin into account in your applications, the reason about the value, 3.13, can be ignored.

Thanks for the explanation. In an atx power supply, I found the mosfet short and diode blown. I guess it's the diode from the snubber circuit. For replacing the diode is there a special requirement like fast recovery, amp rating otherwise they get shorted again? Why did the diode go short in the first place?

Can I ask your opinion, since I've seen simulations where when using 12 Vdc of power source voltage, they have measured up to 2500Vdc of spikes, can a such low power source produce such a High voltgae spikes in a coli? I'd appreciate your suggestions. Thank you.

best regards and special thanks yes if snubber circuit is not used, these spikes might reach at this amplitude due to winding ratio, reverse emf, switching topology, load, leakage, core permeability so the voltage stress spikes may reach at this level

Hello Sir, I am grateful for your explanations, Please can you do a video about the capacitor (ground decoupling capacitor). precisely, the purpose of that capacitor which links cold and hot grounds and how we can troubleshoot its failure

Asalam Aalaikum It has been so long, I was following you silently, be blessed for your initiative you made of teaching us, you are amazing teacher bcz most of every thing I know about flyback converter it is bcz of you, thx for this, but I want to ask you a favor of clarifying fall time (Tf) you said in this tutorial (284) RCD snubber circuit, you said that MOSFET used in that example has 0,3us of fall time(Tf) after I tried to read more than ten datasheet then I realized that there is no MOSFET with fall time of that range, I saw instead delay fall time(Tdf) may probably be in that range. So, I want to ask if you may give us again some other clarification if that 0,3us of that MOSFET was Td or Tdf? Be blessed, thx.

وعليكم السلام ورحمة الله وبركاته the tf (fall time) or tdf turn off delay or td or td(off) or time delay falling edge (tf) have the same the example in that tutorial was just to give the concept we must have to follow the datasheet for exact calculations

assalamalkm. bro will putting snubber resolve ringing issue I am facing in my smps.my uc 3843 destroyed and blew off zener protecting gate....also is putting snubber on output rectifier is it good? and since rectifier diode is heating wasting power is it acceptable to put some clamp to take care of reverse recovery

Thanks a Lot ! Hard to find such a nice explanation! I have assembled a full bridge excited by one TL594 IC at 12,5 kHZ .conected to two IR21844 IC for Mosfet drive . RCD is 2,2uf / 15 ohms and fast diode UF4007 .Mosfets are ok but resistors become extremely hot . What is wrong ? Can you help me ?

welcome and special thanks for appreciating my work in resistor heating up issue, did you selected the correct wattage. 15 Ohms looks very low value, please check it again
