@@liannehickey4532 I had mine with Nutmeg as they offer a socially and environmentally responsible one, but as I'm moving to the US I can't 'hold' it with them so have to transfer it to someone new! But I'm not sure who i'll go with. Just a word on Nutmeg - their E&S options are great but their fees are higher than other places up to 100k, and then they go down. This makes a difference over the long run, so just something to think about x

I borrow my books and use a lot of my library's free digital resources. It has saved me so much money.

As you have mentioned Immy… a massive step forward towards saving $ is to “make your own”. We live in the remote wilderness of 🇨🇦 where there are no options for shopping, dining out, purchasing coffee or snacks, etc. We make, grow, preserve, cook, upcycle, repair, repurpose, and make do or do without. I called my car insurance company to see if I could get a lower premium since I drive so little these days. My agent reduced my yearly costs almost $200! And sent me back a check for a portion of the past 6 months!

Yes! Sotm has helped me learn sooooo much about money that I'd always put in the too hard basket, and I feel so empowered making finance decisions now!

My tip; look at your phone plan and assess if you actually need all that data. Now that I’m working from home I don’t need as much data as I did before. Saved me 5$ a month which adds up.

Cancel unused subscription is so important 👌. Especially for automatic renewal payments, you can as well opt for one time payment.

The amount of times I've been caught out by the automatic renewal ones in the past is... embarrassing!

Personal finance is such an important thing to learn! I work in education and looking to retire at 50 because I started learning what to do in my mid twenties. Highly recommend Minority Mindset on KZread as its entertaining and informative.

Ok, so it's not necessarily a budgeting app, buy there's this thing called splitwise, which is helpful when you go on trips with friends and somebody pays for something, and then the other person pays for something else, cause at the end it sums up who owes what and that way you're not getting all mixed up and accidentally paying for someone else :D

As someone in the states, I wish so badly we had better transport options! We don't have trains in my area and bus trips are incredibly long, I don't have time for them. My neighborhood is not set up for biking or walking and so I don't feel safe doing so. The only option I have is to drive, and although I offset my carbon emissions each month, I still hate having to do that! My car was so expensive, so is my insurance, and the whole system just feels so ineffective. :/ Thank you for your tips and tricks in this video, as a college student with very little money, I appreciate them!!

That must be so frustrating because it's nothing you can change. I have watched a couple of videos about car centric zoning regulations in the US and it seems the criticism is growing. I hope things will start to change for you guys over there.

Love this video !! I have been getting more interested in how to make my money work for me as my savings have been growing (making ethical investments, checking in with values that my bank aligns with). I woke up this morning and was like cool a 23min video to watch while I have my coffee, but it's taken me about an hour cause I keep pausing it with every tip and being like 'oh yeah I will check my phone plan, oh yeah I should see what financial assistance my gov provides'. ¡Great advices! I think I can manage my finances pretty ok (I achieve to save €200 from a €590 salary) but it´s always so cool to hear so nice content.

Immy, you probably know this, but just a heads up that when you move to the US you won't be able to put money in your LISA until you come back. There may be exceptions but I think that applies to most people.

I wish there would be an app for skill swapping! Somebody needs to come up with this!

One of my biggest downfalls with my money is food. I am a big eater, which costs me alot of money. Sometimes I am just bored or stressed, so I eat as something to do or make me feel better. My portion sizes are big too, so when I order takeaways I eat for about 2 or 3 people. It's quite embarrassing and even my family have started making comments about it to me, which doesn't make me feel great. And it becomes so costly, when you can spend £60+ a week on takeaways, just for yourself.

I've been repairing my clothes like if I get a hole in them. Believe me when I say I'm not the greatest sewer. Also drying my own herbs this time around. Having less food waste has been my New Years resolution. I work in retail and I notice one off the manager would redo a fixture to make it look new to sell better. I've done this with food. When the potatoes don't get eaten I'll make a Mexican potato filling for tortillas or make potato patties for burgers. Redo your fridge by placing food in different containers or different place in your fridge at eye level. Things I had in big containers, I put in smaller containers to pack for lunch or easy microwave meals during the day. How you cut up a vegetable or fruit to get the most out of them. Bell peppers I cut the top and bottom off first, remove the stem. Dice up the tops, bottom and middle. If I'm making a stew I cut up the seeds and white part because I think it's like a mushroom and will take on the favor of the stew. The stem is the only thing I put in the compost bin. Yes that helps a lot to avoid food waste. I was debating on what to do with mashed potatoes today and instead of throwing them away I fried it up with a tiny bit of flour and oil and it made for a great potato pancake. also made dried tomaotes to save the ones that were not nice anymore. Not sure about the energy waste though. I started with a hot oven from something I had made earlier but still it took 2 hours on a low setting to get them half-dried.

As a vegan that slips now and then you inspire me to stay on track. I’m also a minimalist but also low income senior so saving money is almost impossible.

Not sure about Deliveroo but Just Eat take one third of the price of your order. I work with food businesses and they all feel they have to join to get customers but would rather people ordered direct.

That's good to know. i sometimes feel like I'm bothering them when I call. they often seem distracted by things going on in the background - also there's often a language barrier and it takes a long time until they get my name and address down. But I will go back to calling directly because one third is just ridiculous! For what - setting up a website?

ESG is is really scary way of some people who deem what ESG is.. As someone who have read ethical philosophy I find it so scary. Because it is essentially a social credit score for companies. How long before it trickle down to other people. Who defines the terms is always my question.

Immy, I have a question! Your patreon offers annual payment instead of monthly, but I'm not sure won't it reduce the sum you will get?

I don't know much about economics but I do know that money or profit is never "free" even if it might be true or seem that way for the person investing :-)

I mean it is free money, the catch is that you can only use that money for retirement or house buying

Talking about your salary with your coworkers might be an issue as some companies write it in your contract that your salary is confidential and you cannot divulge it to anyone besides HR and your manager. So check your contract and your confidentiality agreement before talking or asking about it! Most companies don't really bother to take actions against employees who do talk about their salaries but it really depends on the company and manager, so I wouldn't give them a reason to fire me unnecesarily. Just a point to be aware of...

however you can still ask people on similar jobs in other companies and there are loads of sites out there where you can check what is an average salary for your job level.

I’ve checked every box to get paperless for my investments but I still get some. Very annoying and now I’m wondering if I pay for it 🧐

I can't imagine having much savings, much less having enough over the 3-months-income to invest. Life goals after 60?

I'd guess it would be Riester, although probably not as easy and lucrative. From what Immy said, LISA or ISA gives you more money from the state.

It hurts to hear that u have a 2% inflation rate, it must be much easier to plan you financial future with an inflation so low. I recently graduated and looking for a first job, I've saved studying but kept it in cash and I essentially lost 20% due to inflation

That's not quite how salary sacrifice works. Salary sacrifice means that you 'sacrifice' part of your salary, and your employer pays that amount into your pension instead. Because these conts are paid by your employer instead of you, on paper you are earning less money - so you pay less national insurance, but you're still getting the same amount paid into your pension. If your pension contributions are paid before tax, that's just a 'net pay' arrangement. You've also got 'relief at source', where you pay your contributions after tax, and the pension provider claims the tax back on your behalf. Great video though, love your content as always ❤

ISA interest rates are rubbish at the mo. there's no incentive to save. it's very frustrating. i'm too old to get a LISA. stocks and shares ones worry me because there's a chance you might not get your investment back.

I think the days of getting easy interest with low risk are over. But one should at least try to get the inflation rate from your investments. 2-3% return on quite safe ETFs should be relatively risk-free. But never invest money that you might need soon. I feel that the money I invest should be amounts that I can easily do without, in case I lose half of it or even all of it - although that is less likely.

Me, a noob: hears „female invest“, sees „LISA / ISA“ -> ah yes the female version of ISA 🤣🙈

I always get startled with first world countries government incentives. Not gonna lie, makes me pretty jealous hahahh Meanwhile here they're literally taking more than 27% of your money every single year, savings, salary, investments, doesn't matter, and I won't even go into taxes for anything you buy, like food for exemple, it's just too much... :/

Any goverment incentives make me very nervous given how many policices and human right that have been violated by our current governmet regarding other policies. pension age the goal post has been moved many have had a certainty they planned for changed without a say so, their are so many examples of how our goverment and any legisslation is meaningless they are a law unto themselves i don't trust them feel very uncertain. Sorry i don't mean to be a Debbie downer i hope it works out

How do women earn less? I thought it was illegal to pay women less because they’re women? women choose their jobs, don’t they?

Because there are ways in which women get paid less but it would be very difficult to prove in a court of law that it was happening. Especially if you work for a firm with a non disclosure agreement in your contract. They often do it through things like productivity bonuses. I have been a member of a team working on a project where, upon its completion, the men got productivity bonuses but the women didn't. I only found out about it years later. I could have done with that £1000 as I was a single parent of 2 kids (divorced)!

Like Immy said, women don't tend to negotiate for a higher salary as men tend to be more daring in that regard. Also - often it is still the women who care for the children and cut down on their work hours. And having children is often not great for your career, so women advance less often. On top of that, upper management is still mostly a man's world although it is slowly getting better. So it's not just that some women get paid less in the same position but also women on average in our society. All these things are slowly changing though. One can only hope that in a couple generations, there will be more equality.

It is irresponsible to make sweeping statements such as women earn less than men. Get your facts together. If that were the case and I could pay women less across the board then why don’t all business owners just hire women and pay them less…?

There is lots of research that overall women do make less, some industries are worse then others and women work in jobs generally that make less as well

I, as an example, agreed to a salary that was $200/week less than my male counterparts. I was stoked at the salary so I didn't even know I was being paid less until new management came in and equalized the salary for all positions in my department. My company also recently went to merit based raises rather than seniority. Both of these changes raised the opinion of my company by leaps and bounds.
