27 Treasures that Changed in Pikmin 2 (Switch)
Ойындар
In Pikmin 2 for Nintendo GameCube, there were many brands and product placements in forms of treasures. However, due to expired licenses, many of these treasures were changed in the Switch port of Pikmin 2. This video showcases the differences between all 27 treasures that were changed between the GameCube and Switch versions. This video does not include the Wii version.

Ironically enough if i hadn't seen this video and had purchased the pikmin 2 switch version i think 90% of these changes would have gone over my head, though Duracell would have been a huge red flag cause for some reason the big D battery in the first level is engrained into my memory of the game, and the bottle caps would have sparked some curiosity because i would have vague memories of product placement but no solid examples aside from the batteries. Everyone keeps saying that Nintendo lost the licensing agreement for these brands, but I don't think that is the main reason for the de-branding of Pikmin 2. This was never an issue for the Wii or Wii U re-releases. I think it's more likely that the generic treasures had to be made for the new Korean and Chinese localizations, then the decision was made to use them for all regions since that is easier / cheaper than re-acquiring the licenses.

Thank God the replacements actually look good. Same weekend keep the product placement but I totally understand why and this helps the game have more longevity if for whatever reason it re-releases again
I was initially pretty upset about the product placement being removed, but i'd say at least half of the new ones are either just as good or in some cases better than previous. Also, it's only about 10% of the total treasure hoard, so it won't be too noticeable overall. My only complaint is that the change from carmex -> aloe vera cream changes the color of the item from yellow to green. In my opinion, the yellow carmex texture served a gameplay purpose, clueing in the player that this item can only be obtained with yellow pikmin, and is the first item in the game the player encounters that is locked behind yellows. This creates a subtle mental association with the color yellow and high places very early on in the game. I wish they had kept the yellow coloration when they changed the branding, but I suppose green is better than any of the other existing pikmin colors.

These are literally the embodiment of that ‘mom can we get X?’ ‘We have X at home’ meme. It’s a shame to see the actual logos go since that added to the game’s charm, but its hardly game breaking and I fully understand why. At least now they have a version they can port over way easier to future consoles if needed. My only nitpick with the new designs is some of them have fictional brands while most don’t, leaving a lot of them looking more generic than others.
The removal of the Dr. Pepper cap, and the Ragu lid (while, for good reason) hurts my childhood soul... Playing Pikmin 2 while I was little, Ragu-made Pasta in one hand and Dr. Pepper in the other. Finding those treasures, made for a truly unforgettable experience. R.I.P 2004 Nintendo brand deals.

Oh, they changed a LOT of treasures for the Japanese release. Some ones I know off the top of my head are that the Ancient Ad Series is completely gone, as is the Survival Series; the latter is exclusive to the American version. Interestingly, the Alien Billboard is still in the Japanese version, but it’s in the Odd Logo Series instead. There’s now an entire series dedicated to the little paper covers of Japanese milk cartons, called the Mystical Disc Series, which has I think 12 entries, each one a different brand. I also know that the Duracell batteries are completely gone, instead replaced by a different company in Japan. There’s actually six batteries in the Japanese version, not four. Those are just the changes I know off the top of my head. There’s WAY more where that came from.
I love how detailed the replacement textures are. That and they're keeping with the era the game released. Pretty rad.
That Duracell was only good till March 2010 as seen on the label. Old batteries are dangerous to keep around, so they swapped it with a newer one. Nintendo looking out for us.
I adore that the last treasure you find before the final boss (hypnotic platter) was changed to say 19th anniversary, since pikmin 2 is 19 years old. Also flavor gate from gherkin gate was a nice name change
Nothing can beat seeing those familiar products in this charming game but I understand the change and it gives the same vibe.
Back when Nintendo and radio shack had a partnership and you could basically only find game cube stuff there Best Buy and few other game stores
we lost every major, food, drink, battery, and non consumable object in pikmin 2. RIP funny brand references. (on a side note. Alot of the new designs reminded me of store brand stuff, so solid job on their part)
Thank you for making this.
I understand why the changes were made. This isn't like keeping the Kawasaki brand in Wave Race 64, that's just one company. To get all the contracts and approvals from all the multiple companies could take forever.

Never underestimate just how effective this kind of product placement can be. I was 11 when WipEout 2097 was released in 1996; it was one of my all-time favourite games and featured heavy product placement by Red Bull. Even to this day, nearly 30 years later, I am still brand loyal to RB because it featured so prominently in a cherished childhood game. I wonder how many people in their mid-to-late 20’s now feel similarly about the brands featured in this game?
It's interesting that all of the original branded treasures depict slightly vintage looking logos, and it's nice they continued that feel with many of the redesigns!
I was initially a bit sad they had to change these, but whoever did the new textures in the Switch version did a great job making them believable, and not sticking out like a sore thumb
I want to think the Duracell company are happy that there products are in Pikmin 2. Or at least they we're until the re-upload of 1 and 2
I love that you displayed the Wilson logo upside down. Sort of a testament to how niche or forgotten some of these brands are nowadays
I played Pikmin 2 for the first time in 2017 shortly after my dad's passing to get my mind off of things, but when I saw the Kiwi shoe polish and the Chap Stick (Items that my dad used back in his day), I chose to put the game down. It got a little uncomfortable that the game was reminding me of my late dad.😅 Just a weird coincidence I guess.
I miss product placement in my video games.
The curious thing about this, is how the new treasures look more like modern products rather than designs similar to products around the time Pikmin 2 originally released. Like that apple juice can, that looks like a present day product. This is actually really neat because if PNF-404 is post-apocalypse Earth, then of COURSE the items left behind that survived would be as modern as time got on Pikmin-Earth.

Funny that it’s still not a product placement even though they went from (I’m assuming mostly) American brands to somewhat resembling Japanese brands or just generic stuff.

2:53 Gherkin Gate is the only one they changed the name of, to Flavor Gate. But why? They could have just made a generic pickle lid instead of switching it to an orange jam lid.

I'd guess it's because the word "gherkin" isn't used for a pickled cucumber in parts of the English speaking world, so they wanted to make it more universal.

@@xsmallmusic2174 Yep, it's a pickle! I know Australians and English speaking countries in Europe use "gherkin", and I think it was sometimes used by older generations in North America.

I thought something was different about the treasures this time around...I couldn't put my finger on it until I watched this video, kudos to the developer in charge of this, it had me looking up the items to see if they exist,😅 Though I do understand why the real world brands were replaced.
It’s crazy how Nintendo was able to get ALL of those old licenses in the first place
idk if it's that the license "expired", i think it'd be more like "if we want to rerelease this game again, we have to work out another licensing agreement" and they either couldn't work it out or didn't care to
You can tell they work because when i saw a brand I didn’t know I had to look at the top right to figure out if it was original or not.
Outrageous! Where is my product placement?
To be fair, as an European myself, most of these brands are unknown to me, safe for Duracell, Haribo and a selected few.

Yep, I agree. Same for us here in Singapore where we received North American NTSC Nintendo stuff as part of what would merge to become the 'Middle East and Southeast Asia' system region during the Wii U and 3DS era.
It's cool to see how treasure products change and the evolution with Pikmin 2 from the GameCube to being ported to the Switch. I'm actually okay with this since I have the Wii version of the game. Glad the game still has the treasure names, even if it's silly at times lol
On one hand the fact that there’s a Nintendo game where you collect product placement is amazing. On the other these are less immersion breaking and now Nintendo can release Pikmin 2 without getting the rights to everything again.
1:15 I’m pretty sure the Alien Billboard is in Dream Den on Wii. I never played GameCube, so I was surprised to see it in White Flower Garden
Nintendo went from name brands to dollar store generic brands. 😂

Ah sweet brand licenses, will you never not be inconvenient?
I remember being surprised they actually used real brands when I first played the Gamecube edition. So I’m not surprised they changed them.
I find it really funny how Duracells still look exactly the same as they did in the 2000s.
Alas, there was little that can be done, the licenses were expired.

I miss the OG designs, they really helped to sell the idea of this being earth
I honestly think a lot of the new designs are better
4:17 Yeah, no... yeah... no... yeah...
I get why they couldn’t do the original treasures because of licensing, but I feel like it kind of defeats the point of what made the treasures special. It was to show that you’re really exploring earth with real life objects.
I love that they kept "Durable Energy Cell" as a treasure name.
