26 Fun Facts From The Fix (and Friends) | Mentopolis

Комедия

In Dimension 20: Mentopolis, The Fix (played by Hank Green) represents hyperfixation - the being in charge of removing distractions and intrusive thoughts. He often does so by focusing on scientific fun facts - although the "fun" part is often up for debate.

@@Xanderj89 The Fix is literally a cartoon embodiment of one specific trait of humanity, and in a way where it makes complete sense for him in-world (he "eliminates distraction", which is how hyperfixation works, and "distractions" are also cartoon embodiments of such, such as the big invasive thought guy). He's also shown to mostly only be "frightening" toward the 'targets' of his characteristic. He is in actuality shown as very soft and kind-hearted, sweet, and caring; such as how he cares incredibly deeply for and regularly visits the children of the orphanage of discarded interests to check in on them. I struggled my entire life with mental illnesses with sometimes very severe symptoms, including invasive thoughts, and hyperfixations to the point of forgetting to eat or sleep or do other things I have to. I didn't feel one hint of ableism or feel one hint of offense in either of these representations. I thought they were an interesting and funny portrayals of how embodiments of these specific characteristics that can present itself in me and some others, and sometimes in dysfunctional and "symptomatic" ways, interact with each other when personified and made manifest as these clever and unique 'characteristics as characters'. Plus you're commenting this on a scene where the cartoon embodiment of distilled hyperfixation meets other 'characteristics made characters' where they deeply connect over and are validated in it. I mean through the entire thing, even with the invasive thought, we are shown time and time again how the things which make up hyperfixation as a characteristic (or symptom depending how severe it is presenting itself) can in many cases be helpful and valuable and appreciated and can help solve problems or prevent new ones. Idk if you also struggle with mental illness yourself, but this feels like a reach where you're trying to be upset, when there is enough actual problematic and harmful media out there than this D20 setting which I feel is a very interesting, well-researched and well-thought-out, and compassionate portrayal of the inner workings of a man going through a very difficult time in their lives and how their "inside out" would feel and look. In ways that make me feel more seen if anything, not less.

An interesting fact about the brain (which feels rather appropriate given the setting of this season) is that its constantly undergoing a process called phagocytosis or sometimes pruning, where essentially it eats itself. The brain's cells will consume smaller cells and molecules to help preserve your grey matter and get rid of unneeded neurological connections.

Humans have “taste receptors” in their digestive tracts, urethra, and testicles as well as a few other places in the body. These are mainly connected to autonomic regulation functions for release of enzymes and other substances. They really are just a chemical binding site connected to the nervous system. So these receptors are not truly affiliated with taste, they just share a common mechanism for operating as reuse of common structures is biologically efficient.

Did you know that the axolotl-a species of salamander native to Mexico-has regenerative properties so powerful that it can regrow an entire limb in less than two months? And it can also regrow parts of its heart, eyes, and brain? And scientists, trying to study this ability, have grafted an axolotl's head onto another axolotl's body, and the creatures can survive for over a year like that?

"Just fun facts. They're not scary." This is true. Were I reading these facts in a little compendium by the toilet, I would probably think that book is named "Just Some Fun Facts For When You Ain't Leaving The Toilet For A Long Time And Need Something To Occupy Your Time And Mind". Or something to that effect. What I'm saying is, context and delivery are also incredibly important in determining exactly how fun something is, and almost every time Hank opens his mouth, it doesn't take long for these facts to become terrifying.

I really wish I could hear Hank say, in the Fix's voice, that the first time someone blew up a plane, the perpetrator was charged with specifically murder because nobody had thought to make the act of blowing up a plane a crime.

to update, this fact isn't actually consensus atm, it was one of a few theories on how woodpeckers protect their brains, but it was found that there actually isn't any sponging in or around their skulls at all; to put it simply we have no idea how woodpeckers do that shit

26 facts? I can get behind that. Also the Dining Car fact is fantastic because DID YOU KNOW that in Melbourne, Australia, we had a dining car tram that operated as a restaurant, and remained one of our longest in service city trams from the 1980s until the late 2018? Now the fleet has been decommissioned, the plan is to convert some of the fleet BACK into static diners, looping back to that very fact that Pasha mentioned and re-using as much of the chassis and seating. We also have a burger place called Easey's Beef & Burger which reused decommissioned trains for the same purpose.
