It's such a nice feeling when a repair is completed. It seems that a possible overvoltage took out the tantalum capacitor (and the 8 volt receive regulator and the 8 volt transmit voltage) which shorted out that 14-volt line, which caused the coil to burn out. Glad you prevailed in that fight. Have a good weekend.

Hi Peter, Another interesting video. You notice that the faults are all to do with 14 volt supply which would suggest to me that the 14 Volt rail has spiked at some stage causing the tant, voltage regulator and various regulating circuits to fail. ICOM mains PSU’s are notoriously problematic. I would check the condition of the surge arrest circuits in the front end of the PSU along with the capacitors and the usual stuff as it may just do it again. Best Regards John
@TRXLab

Thanks John, very good hint. I did not remember that this particular PSU was so problematic, but you are the ICOM specialist!
@M0XFXUK
Жыл бұрын
@@TRXLab Hi Peter thanks for getting back to me. To be honest at this vintage I don't think switched mode PSU's age that well generally. It’s an interesting failure, it may have been that the tant shorted and the PSU over shot the target voltage when the short condition cleared. Great video as always BTW I love all the fault diagnosis you really are a master at it. Hope all is well, very best regards John M0XFX

Tear drop Tantalum capacitor's, I don't know how many I have seen over the years that they short and burn like that. Some will emit so much smoke that you'll think something really bad has happened. I know designers use them for there low ESR rating but if it's in a not so critical circuit I've just replaced them with an equivalent electrolytic type.

@TRXLab
Жыл бұрын
don't think so
@jpmiller8098 Жыл бұрын
5 problems but presumably it was working before it smoked. One common denominator is the 14 volt supply. Is it possible that either an operator error or a momentary power glitch could have caused all of these to fail at once? A momentary high voltage on 14 is one possibility. The 16 V cap failed taking the inductor. The regulator failed also which could have been overvoltage transient. Hardest to explain is the driver transistor for the TX switch. W5PZT
@stargazer7644
Жыл бұрын
The momentary glitch was the Tant shorting out. They are well known for this. I think that event might have caused a transient on the 13.8V supply regulation that contributed to the other failures.

I remember when i bought the IC-765 back 20+ years ago. It was a great RTX. Nice repair job.
Excellent video again, Peter!
Great job Peter. I heard the frustration in your voice a couple of times with another problem popped up. You had me glued to the edge of my seat watching it on the big screen TV.

Well done Peter, it is never fun when a radio has multiple faults that do not seem to be related.
Hi Peter. You certainly earned your money for this radio repair. Well done as usual, interesting video. Wishing you a very Happy Christmas and a Peaceful New Year to you and your family, hope to see many more videos in 2023! 73, Brian EI8EJB

Well done! And thanks for doing this video. I tried to sum up how all those components got broken at the same time, but didn't quite manage. Voltage spikes can do weird things for sure. Tantalum caps are too prone to failures, I don't use them anymore if possible. I must thank you to save all these nice old radios and give them more life. I like them a lot. I have a IC-761, these radios are beasts!

Hi Peter, It does take some work locating and repairing multiple problems. Glad you were able to find them all and have the radio working again. I like how you describe the process to determine what is at fault and the steps to make the repair. Stay safe. 73 WJ3U

Wow Peter that was an awesome feat of fault finding. I thought you were all done when the tantalum was changed but it wasn’t to be. Great job tracking multiple faults down. The owner will be pleased. Regards Graham

Great troubleshooting TRX Lab! I enjoyed watching you fix 5 problems in a Radio! I also thought it was funny you called TX8 in German: "Acht" at 59:32. One typo I found: at 22:06 you said MicroFarad which obviously should be MicroHenry. It even says it on the Tag. Well done!!

The one radio I would love to see fixed is the Kenwood TS-440S. This radio suffers from the Sony Bond unlock problem I would love to see someone who knows what they are doing address this on this old but very nice radio.
Thanks again , surprised to see how a cascade failure went through --- what seems to me so many seperate areas ?

The spark while component failing did it
Oh $#^&!... 😒 don't you just hate instant cascades of seemingly unrelated problems like that - all caused by a simple failure of one 20c component! VERY nice job, Peter!
Nice fix Peter.

Thanks John, very good hint. I did not remember that this particular PSU was so problematic, but you are the ICOM specialist!

You can see why radios such as this are becoming unrepairable. Not that they can be repaired if the parts are available but the cost of bench time rapidly becomes more than the radio is worth.

Wow, tag tantalum explosion madness.

A question: between this one, or yeasu ft 990 or yeasu ft 1000. Wich one should I choose and why?
I find it stranges that so many faults was related to supply voltages. Does this radio suffer from a voltage spike?
@TRXLab
Жыл бұрын
don't think so
5 problems but presumably it was working before it smoked. W5PZT
@stargazer7644
Жыл бұрын
The momentary glitch was the Tant shorting out. They are well known for this. I think that event might have caused a transient on the 13.8V supply regulation that contributed to the other failures.
How many hours did you spend altogether on this? I hope you received a fair compensation.
I have the same radiostation icom 765 and its not working,i cant to start the station,when i pres start butom nothing hapends, can yuo tel me ehat to do,what to check?
