    The price you pay for a truck like this makes it very valuable. 2-5 grand and its yours. Compared to a brand new truck or a foreign made brand. You can get a brand new engine for a grand. The trans can be overhauled and built stronger at a good price. The small things that go out on 88-98 gm trucks are easy and cheap fixes. BEST truck for the money you pay ever made

    I bought a 98 tahoe last year for $2,650.00. It was an ex fire department truck. Had 208,000 miles on it when i bought it.now has 211,000 miles. Rebuilt transmission, and they installed the updated fuel injectors and new intake manifold gasket. Runs like a dream. Love it! I also disabled the door chime on mine and added a keyless entry system/ alarm. Only thing what was a pain to change was the starter motor. It went out due to a weak spring inside of it. The gear came out but not enough to engage onto the fly wheel. And it was the factory oem starter.

    Had the 2001 Z71 Tahoe. It had a very bad problem like you were explaining when you give it a good amount of throttle, it would buck. Dealer read the codes kept coming up as either misfire and/or bad fuel injector(s). Even with all that changed out it still had the same problem, bucking. I sent it in again and wrote an explanation of how to drive to get it to buck. Of course they did not read it so when I picked it up it was still doing it. I forced the mechanic into taking a ride with me. As soon as I got it to buck he had me pull over he got out put his hand on both sides of the catalytic converter (intake and out) and said I know what it is I'll have fixed tomorrow. Boom, he replaced the catalytic converter and all was good.

    If you've replaced everything on the ignition side and it's still getting a misfire, I think it's about time to look into the fuel side. Might need a new spider injection unit, there's a conversion kit that lets you convert from CSFI (central sequential fuel injection) to MPFI (multi port fuel injection).

Oil changed ever 3k miles etc. Any issues the first one took it to a very reputable shop for work. They skimped on NOTHING. I was more then happy to pay $2,000.00 for the truck. I've had my 1998 Silverado 13yrs. The truck is still going with 230,000. I have a huge list of parts I've put on over the years. Had it towed a few times for fuel pump. Limped it home several times over brake lines & simulator brake issues. Many front end suspension parts. Replaced the intake gasket & all of the fuel injection system. I Replaced the A/C compressor, radiator, distributor, transfer case to transmission seal, rearend bearings, everything on the brakes several times. & I'm sure I'm forgetting a lot more. If I had to pay a mechanic to fix this truck, it would've been sold before it hit 180,000 miles. It's just had a lot of attention to get to this high mileage. I think I deserve a new truck after have this one for 13 yrs.

Let me know how that $5k truck works out for you with no idea what the previous batch of owners did to it. You're going to be spending another $2k as soon as you get it because the other guy hacked it up so that you don't notice any issues. If you don't get this, experience is the best teacher.

    Replace your idler and tensioner pulleys to fix the squeaks. For the misfire, you're gonna have to pull the upper intake cover and check the injection spider. Check the fuel rails and the pressure regulator. My rails were rusting from the inside out and it clogged the pressure regulator and it was dumping unmetered fuel into the engine. My truck still ran fine, except for an occasional misfire and a rich running code at 3/4 to full throttle. While your intake is open, might as well clean out all the carbon buildup in there. You'll be amazed how much is in there. Especially, since your mileage is up there. My truck has half the mileage of yours and I couldn't believe how much buildup was in there. Even the egr valve was caked in carbon.

    Same issue - I just replaced plugs, wires, cap, and rotor along with fuel filter with all AC Delco Premium parts to see if that would resolve the P0306 code (misfire on cylinder 6) I would get when going down the freeway long distances. Driving around town, the light will just go off. It didn't resolve the issue. On a rare occasion, I would get a P0430 which is probably due to richness of the misfire. I am definitely interested in resolving this.

    About the rear door only in the right side, I have an answer for you. Is all about saftey. Those kind of doors are called "suicide doors", and there is a good reason for that, and is because you open the door hoping no one is going to pass really near the truck, so the door doesent snap you if it hit it. At the right side is suposed to be the part of the road in which no car would be passing if you are park (for example in a highway side); so probabilities of accidents because of this doors decrease down. Hope my research help to answer your question. Good video!! and excellent truck!! (by the way, good advice the one of the breakes)

  • @eyellgeteven9928

    @eyellgeteven9928

    I always thought they called them suicides doors, because if you open them at freeway speed they'll rip you out of the vehicle. And your theory doesn't add up...pretty much all extended cab trucks from 15 yrs or so back, open on both sides suicide style...I don't think the risk you're talking about went away at any point. Plus, I had a 99 S10 ZR2 that only had one rear door and it opened on the drivers side. I remember reading somewhere about how using only one door was necessary due to keeping structural integrity of the cab in those earlier years .

    Fuel pumps last 100,000. If you start hearing a wierd noise in the rear that sound like a humm the pump is getting ready to go out. if the 4 wheel drive light go down at the actuator which is simple to change. Parts are cheap and you can keep them running for ever if the body isn't rutsed out. Try new brak drums on the back,they are cheap to replace.. The exhaust leak might be from the flange has rusted out that goed to the cast iron .I had a 1996 chevy truck with over 400,000 miles but it was rusting out a lot.

  • @jholzer1989
    @jholzer19896 жыл бұрын

    A common issue that causes misfiring and lean codes is the fuel injector module aka the spider injector. The poppet nozzles get brittle and crack causing leaking fuel in the intake manifold. GM has an upgraded unit for this engine as well as he 4.3 engine. Also check for vacuum leaks. The intake manifold gaskets are prone to failure causing vacuum leaks. The misfire can be due to a worn camshaft. On mine the cam shaft is unable to fully open the valve causing a misfire at 1500 rpm on heavy loads. Also a fuel injector can cause the same issue. It can lean at higher rpm

    solid old trucks, they have a few little issues, but they're usually just work trucks due to their age. The beauty isthat you can daily drive them and use them for work if you need to. I have a 98' like yours, has a lot of the same little issues yours has, mine's creeping up on 220k on the miles, still purrs like a kitten

    Water Leak Fix for you maybe!!!!!!!!!!!!! Have a 1996 Chevy Suburban 4x4 and was getting a ton of water on driver side and it was a easy fix when i found it. The lower screw on the cowl drain duck under the hood was louse and allowing water to flow right into the cab of the truck. This is hard to get to from the top but not impossible with a 7mm ratcheting wrench. It has one screw at top and one at bottom, I pulled the drain out sealed the lower hole with marine goop and just used the top screw to put back in with foam tap on the duct were it touches the cab to try and not have any rattle. So there is no confusion this is the hard plastic drain on the fire wall next to the fender. It gets the water from the cowl drain and feeds it into the fender.

I always get people asking about it. love this truck

    The brake issue is due to the master cylinder. Alot of GMT400 owners replace the master cylinder with one from a GMT800 (99-06 NBS Silverado) and they get a much better and firmer pedal. Aside that, everything else is great. Stereos can be changed, as well as speakers, and it has had a fair amount of work done to it. I imagine the cooler lines and such are needing to get done simply due to the moisture in the air. Rust is the biggest enemy to these trucks. My 98 has 219K and the only major thing I have had done is the transmission rebuild at 196K. I have replaced a couple batteries, an alternator, brakes, water pump, a power steering pressure line, and other than that, simple maintenance. Honestly, you cannot go wrong with a GMT400 (88-98 C/K) truck. I purchased my truck in 2011 with 186K on the odometer for $3000. Best truck I have ever owned, and the most reliable vehicle I have owned.

    TH3C001 the funny thing is, I always thought it was normal. Then I go in and have to drive my wife’s Elantra and I drive it like my truck, it is like you are slamming on the brakes every single time! Perhaps I’ll upgrade it someday, but I have gotten used to its nuances and know how to make it brake hard if I need to. That and the ABS doesn’t work on mine.

    I once had an 88 regular cab short step side, 350 with 700R4, owned it about 11 years total, 309K on it when I sold it to a friend. Compression was little down, #1 cylinder would foul a plug about every 20K miles but still ran pertty decent, I have regreted selling it ever since, I loved that lil truck. It was the 1st year of that body style..... Would love to have another one. Right now i have a 95 dodge short wide side with the 318, good truck, just ain't a chevy.....I like the early to mid 90's the most, maybe one day..... Hey, I can dream, right.......

    What is the air fuel ratio ? it's missfiring when supposed to run rich suddenly. (heavy acceleration,or towing = load on engine) Also, it's hesitating when you blip the throttle. I would say you have a fuel related issue,or a small vacuum leak.

    I would try replacing the fuel filter with the acceleration issue first yhen replace the fuel pump if that doesnt fix it. We had the same exact issue in my dad's 96 Silverado 5.7 after hours of work we checked the fuel pressure and the pressure seemed good at about 54 lbs. This motor must have 64 lbs of fuel pressure at all times to run properly. We replaced the fuel pump and it solved the issue.

Still runs great and looks good, even with some rust on the front fender bottoms and one quarter panel. But I found good used front fenders and a new patch panel with no problem. Also found a new grille & good used front bumper.
