    Every 4 or 5 years I dive back into the sherlock holmes stories, in their entirety and read or listen to them all completely. It's just long enough that I forget exactly how holmes comes to many of the conclusions. But the one thing I never forget, is how holmes snuck back into Watson's life, in typical holmes fashion haha!

    Extraordinary narration. The accent is so different to other performances done in both radio and tv, all plummy RADA approved Received Pronunciation, and what a unique and refreshing twist to stories already so familiar and beloved by us all. The voice, pace and delivery are also admirable. Thank you to all who enabled me to pass so many pleasant hours listening to these!

    Mine is "There is nothing in which deduction is so necessary as in religion. It can be built up as an exact science by the reasoner. Our highest assurance of the goodness of Providence seems to me to rest in the flowers. All other things, our powers, our desires, our food, are all really necessary for our existence in the first instance. But this rose is an extra. Its smell and its color are an embellishment of life, not a condition of it. It is only goodness which gives extras, and so I say again that we have much to hope from flowers."

    Sir Arthur certainly knew how to revive a character. J.K Rowling's revival of Harry in the Deathly Hallows was well written, but obvious. J.R.R. Tolkien's revival of Gandalf was surprising and great, but also somewhat predictable (like really, who would think Gandalf could be killed that easily?). Well done, Sir. Rest in peace.

    Mostly because he wanted finish the series with the death of Sherlock Holmes. The Final Problem was supposed to be the final story. After it was published, people protested his death. Some even insulted the author. I don't know if it's true but in the internet people claim that the Queen asked the author to ressurect Sherlock Holmes. That's why it's unparalleled with the other, intended resurrections.

  • @cha5

    @cha5

    2 жыл бұрын

    There had been examples of people being impacted by the death of a fictional character prior to the Holmes stories such as Charles Dickens death of his child character Neill in ‘The Old Curiosity Shop’ in which supposedly people from across the ocean were hoping and praying that she wouldn’t die at the end of the story, But not even her death came close to the impact of Holmes’s death in which thousands of people canceled their subscriptions to the Strand Magazine and men would wear black armbands in mourning and people would constantly be asking Doyle to bring Holmes back in-spite of statements from him such as “Holmes is dead and damned.” & “If I hadn’t killed him, He would have killed me.” When ‘The Hound of The Baskervilles’ came out in 1901-1902 it was really was considered more of a question as to “when” Holmes would be resurrected, not “if” he would be.

    It may be said that Sir Arthur Conan Doyle may never had intended to create The Empty House in the first place. You may notice the year this was written in. It had been a long time before the author had written again. Although, it is a slightly symbolic thing that Watson took so much time to write again in-universe before the dramatic return of the world's greatest detective.

    If Holmes plan was to play dead then wasn't that plan shot when the rock thrower saw he'd not went over falls? Just here trying to follow that but it bugs me when the story doesn't make sense lol. I get he disappeared and bad guys didn't know when he'd reappear but they did know he was alive. So why mess with Watson and those who thought he'd died for years? His plans could have played out just the same knowing as not knowing.

    Wonderful story & reading. Thank you! NB: Can you believe that Jeremy Brett pronounces Lestrade Le- straid? It jars my ear. But cf: “They always gave the name the Cockney pronunciation 'Lest-raid' rather than 'Le-strahd' as people educated in French tend to read it. Joolz wrote: The "Lestrade" pronunciation is widely debated, as are other pronunciations in Holmes, such as "Irene" in Irene Adler.” Speaking only for myself, I prefer your pronunciation.

    Le Strade is the English pronunciation Many French names were in England after people from the Low Countries moved to England after William and Mary were monarchs. Therefore Jeremy Brett was right especially in London.

    One thing that bugs me: Sherlock faked his death to hide from his enemies... But Moran, of the very crime ring he is hiding from, knew all along he was not dead. He had no reason to keep that a secret from his compatriots. Does not that make the entire charade pointless. If the only people who know Holmes is still alive are the very people he is hiding from?

  • @johnmcdonough955

    Initially the secret was from absent compatriots . When an equally murderous compatriot showed himself and the secret was broken; Holmes may have decided that any action by Moriarty's seconds in disclosing Holmes' being alive would be counter productive in firstly drawing attention to their claim by police and second in so much as one can not be convicted of murdering someone already dead.
