The best ideas that I've incorporated into my very small apartment is 1. Go Big with the wall artwork and furniture, 2. strategically placed mirrors, 3. use lighter colors and 4. use light colored, flowy, but tall curtains to create the illusion of space and give the room flow and airiness. The go big with furniture and wall artwork really works. I am considering trying the vertical wallpaper. The kind that can be peeled off without damaging the walls.

All of these sound great except the big furniture thing in my opinion. I have a tiny ass studio & am using very small furniture but even with this furniture it takes up literally all the space & makes it incredibly difficult to walk

I guess it depends how big your small apartment is. There is no way I could fit a large sofa into my apartment (actually my bed is my sofa bcos that's all I have space for). I guess you have to think outside the box. My neighbour (ie living in same sized small studio as I do) has a lounge that she converts to a bed every night (no not a typical sofa bed and it's compact + reasonably comfortable, but she's tiny). I'm considering buying a sofa that's long enough (and comfortable enough) to sleep on. It's learning your options and figuring out what your prepared to live with (and what fits into your budget)

The plural form of 'decor' -- decors -- as used in this narration seems odd. Decor refers to a style or theme and presumably there wouldn't be more than one in a room. I'm guessing that the narrator is actually referring to decor (or design) elements or accessories.

#3: DIY 2x4 Console Table: A rough 2x4 DIY construction is ok as a place saver or for trial, but it's far better to use a couple of cubbie storage units like an Ikea Lack unit or a 3-cubbie x 3-cubbie unit side by side to provide that drink/lamp shelf behind the sofa and considerable longterm storage hidden below. Whether you also incorporate baskets or bins or just place items straight into the cubbies, it makes more efficient use of the space lost to a console surface/footprint. #5: 'Secret' Storage Spaces: Where possible, leave the secret storage empty standardly. If you get unexpected company or a sudden visit from building management, clutter can be swept into that space in mere minutes. If those spaces were already filled, where could you hide your mess? There's a clash of advice here: #17 directs us to use furniture with obvious legs, pieces that don't sit too low to the floor. Then in #24 we are told to use furniture that sits low to the ground. Both are supposed to improve a sense of spaciousness to a room. Which is it?

I feel mislead. You talk about installing shelves, overhead lights, even so far as to paint in different colors. The best one by far was the no curtains. I live in a small apartment. i have neighbors living incredibly close that I see way to much as it is. In addition, If I were to do any of the renovations you mentioned I would be in jeopardy of breaking my lease. It is standard practice to have a " no construction and/or altering" a rental unit of any kind in lease agreements. Although many of your ideas were good, your title needs changed..

Asking landlords doesn't hurt as sometimes they say yes to more than expected. Generally I think it's fine to paint, install shelves or art, or switch lights if you repaint, remove, fill any holes you left, and switch back to original lights. Or there are plenty of non-damaging ideas here like adding lamps or rugs. Some other renter-friendly wall options are removable wallpaper or removable murals (some kinds can even be painted, and even just one accent wall makes a big visual difference) or stick-on backsplashes. Stick-on flooring is available too. As for neighbors seeing in windows, can have curtains for night and/or try privacy window film.

I don't think this person realizes that small apartments are usually owned by landlords who, maybe, will allow you to put a hole in the wall to hang a picture, but if I did anything i.e. track or recessed lighting, I would get evicted. Many of these rooms look dated and uninteresting.

My first apartment rental was in pari slope Brooklyn. The landlords were 2 gay dudes that had no problem with my gf at the time being a stripper. I suppose they just wanted make sure rent was paid. The brownstone had 3 floors and each floor was a rental. Ours was called 1 bedroom. The bedroom being a closet that held a queen size mattress with 2feet of space leftover at the foot of bed near the door. My point of posting this is I had no idea I was supposed to ask permission before I did any kind of painting. And we went ahead and painted the entire apartment without telling the landlord. So when the lender came in first time and saw his face was absolutely priceless. He was shocked to say the least. Granted we had painted the kitchen a fairytale puke green with darker green accents at the window frames. Painted the bathroom a deep purple and painted the rest of the apartment ivory. And let’s not forget painted the metal ceilings a nice metallic silver. I do remember him saying wow this remind me of well this is very fairytale-ish

Not true about the ceiling. It can make a room feel smaller and it can make it dark which u do not want. Bigger furniture is wrong too. So many of these are wrong.

Interesting ideas but it did not impress me much. Some of it did not convince me too. Some of it I already knew.
