This is the dreaded journey from Vientiane (Laos) to Hanoi (Vietnam) on a sleeper bus. Many people say that this 25 hour journey is the worst travel experience you can have. We were lucky enough to have the double row bus meaning we were together the whole time, whereas others have the typical bus being single rows.
After travelling for what seemed like forever we, arrived at the border. However, this was a bitter sweet feeling as the border did not open for another 4 hours. The bus engine and the aircon was turned off at this time. All we could do was lay and WAIT!
Crossing the physical border was somewhat of a question mark. We had to walk ourselves from one border to the next with no one telling us where to go. Arriving at the Vietnam immigration point we were told we had to pay a $2 fee each to get our passports stamped, which we did not have. They refused us entry until fortunately a kind women behind us over heard and offered to pay. While waiting to get back on the bus all of the border guards were staring and making comments which made Amy (and all of the other women passengers) super uncomfortable.
Once back on the bus we thought the worst was behind us, little did we know that another gruelling 12 hour journey awaited us (which Amy slept the entirety of).
Our many prayers were finally answered and after all of that travel we had arrived in the hustle and bustle of HANOI!
The question is would we do this again?
HELL YES!!
