I mean I love gaming, overall, and not just classics, and I really love some of the modern experiences, but I'd be hard pressed to point out a year after 2000 that had so many great releases. @@TheMedievalNerdInnovation died a death in 2006/7, with the huge corporate buyout of the video game industry. It's all about rinse, repeat, reskin, casualize for biggest profits now, except we still have the indie / kickstarter scene, so every now and then innovation does come through. 1992-1999 was simply insane in terms of cutting edge pioneering creativity. Back when creative people were in charge, and risks were taken producing some the greatest games EVER (Morrowind, Dungeon Keeper, System Shock 2 etc) despite many of them not being commericaly sucessful. RIP the golden era of video games. Now please excuse me, I have to install COD 27, Tomb Raider 14 and Battlefield 69...

Well done for including Darklands. The best cRPG of 1990-1995! Also, back in the day, there was quite a discussion on whether Arkania was an RPG or a Sim, because it was so detailed in the camping, having to eat and drink, and general other real life requirements! I have all these games sitting on my game shelves, except for the arcade and platform games. I like the "brain" genres: Adventures, strategy, wargames, RPGs and SIMs!

Wizardry 7 is right up there with Ultima 7 as one of my favorite games of all time. I have played it so many times i’ve lost count. For years i used the Wizardry Gold random encounter sound as my ringtone. Wiz7 also introduced npc groups seeking the same macguffins you were, so you could get through a dungeon only to find someone beat you to the map you were seeking. NPC groups could be killed. This leads to each play through being slightly different as you may encounter different groups of npcs each play through. And you can import your final save into Wizardry 8, including the bad end, which is a hilarious level of detail.

I didn't see / play Underworld until late '94, after I'd played Doom, but it still blew me away. System Shock was also very ambitious and developed concurrently (albeit delayed) with Doom. Then theres Future Shock by Bethesda, before Bethesda turned into the complete mess it became after releasing Morrowind... Very exciting times, 1991-1999, for PC gaming and video gaming in general!

Im oldschool finish ever game on the hardest setting. It's never a brain thing for me, I played all the old infinity engine games etc. BUT now Im old, I gotta admit, playing Ori + The Blind Forest (amazing game) with my 6 year old daughter a few years back, I got stuck! And had to use KZread 3-4 times. Not cos of puzzles per se, but cos my old fat hands couldn't do the jumps and tricks required for the hardest most dramatic parts of the game. @@TheVanillatech I try not to use any walkthroughs if possible. I try. But I admit, that if I get stuck somewhere long enough, given how much time I have for gaming (and it's sooooo little), I tend to from time to time look up a particular section, so that I could carry on further on my own. I would never start with cheats though. It defeats the purpose of gaming. Gaming with cheats for me is like playing poker with no money involved. Sure, you can do it, but there's nothing stopping you from going all in all the time, and it's just not fun. Same with games. No challenge = no fun. I am not as agile as I used to be in those more demanding games either. And it's not even the reflexes. I just lost the skill from playing mainly slower games over the last couple of decades. xD

Star Trek 25th Anniversary, which I played as a part of the Interplay 10th Anniversary Anthology that came with one of my family’s first decent computers in like 1995, has has a lasting influence on me as a person who works in the interactivity field and is an aspiring developer. One of the aspects of the game that was weird to me that it wasn’t done more often in subsequent adventure games was the specialized team assembly aspect. I always thought there was a lot of potential there for all different kinds of experience, but I never really saw much of it after that other than the sequel. I didn’t care about Star Trek at all, but I was completely enamored with the art, tone, puzzle structure, and flow of that game. It remains in my personal top ten or fifteen.

I know it sounds hyperbolic but Fate of Atlantis really is a better story than the last 2… 3 Indiana Jones movies. No really, I’m not being cute, I would recommend playing it over watching Crystal Skull & Dial of Destiny & probably over the 3rd movie too. Ultima Underworld really was something special in it’s day, even if it seems a bit primitive in this day & age. Wages of War was a good addition to the series & a good game generally, if you’re in to them. I’d recommend it personally. Kings Quest VI (I refuse to say the subtitle, that kind of pun should be a crime 😄) is excellent if you’re OK with that kind of humour & moon logic. I am but not everyone is. You introduced me to Moonstone & it is great. Unfortunately not had a chance to play multi-player, I really must get on that. Lost Files of Sherlock Holmes… (did you say “your mama” there?! 😄)… anyway it’s a bit of an obscure one now but it is great, especially if you’re a Holmes fan & I highly recommend it to anyone who is. Nothing needs to be said for Bomber Man. It’s absolutely one to play if you’re at all interested in the history of video games. Funnily enough I played it most back in the day 2 player on the original DMG, black & whit… shades of baby poo green Game Boy using a link cable with my best mate & it was (you know I’m just forced to say it) a blast! Pun almost maliciously intended. 😂 I go back & forth on Star Control II but I do think it’s a good game, just perhaps trying to do too much & be all things (as the idiom goes) to all men. Idioms like that were written in a “different time” because that makes sexism OK apparently? Anyway it’s one people really should try out for themselves & make up their own minds. Alone in the Dark was amazing in it’s day but hasn’t aged as well as some people seem to think it has. It also spawned 1 good sequel, a surprisingly fun Christmas side game & some less than stellar sequels. That being said if you have any interest in the history of games at all you absolutely must play it. You introduced me to Push-Over & I’m glad you did, thanks. It’s a great puzzle game & is still super fun to this day! Wolfenstein 3D absolutely had to be on this list because it’s such a fat chunk of the history of gaming & if you haven’t played it you really need to, right now! Formula 1 GP was really impressive for it’s day but more sim than arcade racer, so not really for me but absolutely worth playing if you do like racing sims. I’m not a fan of RTS’s but even I can appreciate Dune II’s place in gaming history. Kind of a shame really that I get bored before I get too far. F-15 really is impressive for it’s time & fore me anyway still fun today. I’ve never played The Patrician & I’m not big on business sims but it looks & sounds from what you’ve said like I should give it a go? I’d forgotten about Dark Lands. I remember the fuss about the 1st release being so buggy it could “kill Windows” & I’ve never plaid it because, to be completely honest, I didn’t even know there was a fixed version. Star Trek: 25th Anniversary is just great! If you’re a fan of TOS you absolutely must play it, if you’re not you should play it anyway because it actually is a great game, even if you don’t know the source material. Legend of Kyrandia is excellent & still very playable now. I don’t know if it ever got a remake but it really should. Frederik Pohl’s Gateway sounds interesting when described but the interface is overly complicated & most of all, I’m dyslexic & while my reading level’s good enough now back in the day text adventures made me feel excluded. Wow! What a mixed bag of games. Aside from the one that could force a Windows reinstall & even though not all are for me that is a list of absolute bangers & the foundation of modern gaming. What a fascinating list, thanks!

I've not seen the latest movie yet, but you're like the third person telling me not have my hopes up. So yeah, I think this Indy game is the best Indy "movie" we're getting. Ever. On the upside, it's interactive, so even better. Yeah, moon logic is only my thing when the game's really good, and frankly KQ is, so it's fine with me too. If you ever get a chance to play Moonstone in multiplayer, either make sure that all of you are of similar skill level, or just agree not to kill the weakest of players straight away, and you'll all have a lot of fun. :) You just gotta love exploding puns, don't you? ;) You know, I never completed Star Control II. I loved it, sure, I attempted like a dozen of times at least over the few decades, but never managed to carry on playing long enough to complete it actually. If you played Push-Over I take you also played One Step Beyond? They're like an unofficial duo-logy of games, aren't they? Oh, Darklands is fantastic! If you ever get a chance or time to check it out, it's worth it. But it's one of those hundred-of-hours-kind-of-a-game, so keep that in mind. xD Yeah, I can't disagree. Whichever control method you go for in Gateway, it's rather a lot. And will take a while to get used to and work out, but the story's really good. I'll try to have that Obscure DOS Games video ready for tomorrow, and I've a really fun list of games for it. I know, you'll like it!

In honesty you'd have to patch the game before you can complete it....or at least in any original logical sense. I'd have to say that these were the games that changed (at least for gaming) my focus into a more intense virtualistic view that separated the characters as players, from those that weren't inrelation to them in "honest"/"BAD" behaviour and deliberately misconducted behaviour making the game all the more difficult avoiding the "Avatar"/good elements.
