About Me
“The world needs more makers.” ~ RoyerX
Being from a family of creatives whose motto was to produce not to consume was etched into Kyle from a very early age and being educated at home gave him many opportunities to work hard at his own creative pursuits.
At eighteen, Kyle graduated high school and two weeks later received his Journeyman Smith Stamp and a rare double win of the George Peck Award and Bill Moran Award, “the 18-year-old prodigy”, “the blazing bladesmith” was what BLADE Magazine labeled him. Following that victory in November, 2009 BLADE Magazine ran a special five page spread “That Young and That Good”, the article went on to say “His ability to masterfully execute new designs, processes and artistic damascus patterns is remarkable. In spite of his young age, his fit/finish and attention to detail is representative of some of todays most known and sought after makers.” He was one of two to achieve Mastersmith by the age of twenty. His knives and his skills are highly sought after worldwide.
In the early years, if you weren’t at a knife show or a hammer-in, learning from the masters, information was hard to find, there was no online content and only a few books and videos, so it was a lot of trial and error in the knife shop. Kyle is passionate to teach makers his more than fourteen years of experience.
“The mediocre teacher tells. The good teacher explains. The superior teacher demonstrates. The great teacher inspires.” We hope we can inspire you on your maker’s journey.
Thanks for watching
Enjoy!

    In my woodcarving I get lots of “wows” and “I could never do that” comments. Well, you could if you are willing to devote hours upon hours of focused attention to tiny detail. Kyle has mastered the mundane, and revealed the marvelous there in.

    I'd be tempted to vacuum up all the sanding and gold dust then watch one of Cody's Lab videos on how to recover the gold. More for the fun of it than it being economical to do.

    I'd build a removable catch can around the vice, when done sanding, simply brush all the filings, steel and all, into the catch can, put it on a shelf until next time. Make a fun project for a rainy day in about 20yrs time 😂

    Jewellers who work with gold save everything. Every bit of sand paper and the carpet around them and all the rest. And then years later they'll take all that material, burn it all and then recover the gold from the ash. Depending on how much gold work they do that can add up to be a substantial amount of it.

    Great video! It's always satisfying seeing the gold _squished_ into the channel lol. That's a really cool design and layout for the engraving, and I love that little detail on the pommel nut. With regard to the excess gold not really being worth trying to collect, you might be able to sand the fittings over a bucket or a pan during the first grit where the majority of the excess gold comes off. Then after a year or two, you'll have accumulated a decent amount, which could then just be separated from the steel and sandpaper dust. If you didn't want to separate it yourself, you probably sell mixture as is, as I'm sure there are plenty of people would be willing to buy it and sort it themselves for the right price. Anyway, just an idea :) Btw, not sure if ya noticed, but just in case sorry I haven't been around here the last couple of vids, lately it's been a bit difficult to find the time, but I wanted to say that I watch every single one 👍. Hope all's been well for you guys. As always, thanks for freely sharing the great content. Take care. ~Paul

    maybe this is a dumb suggestion, but couldnt you acid etch a computer designed pattern for the purpose of uniformity and spacing then come back with the engraving tools to clean it up and undercut? I have seen acid etching used as an alternative to filework on some knives and I wonder if that might be a useful methodology for some of this type of work as opposed to laying out a pattern by hand?

  • @tommyw68

    @tommyw68

    4 жыл бұрын

    @Jadon Ingalls - I thought it might not be so smart only because A) although I may be absorbed with learning in such videos I have little if any practical experience in such engraving or acid etching, and B) I would assume (maybe I'm wrong) that acid etching does not leave as fine an edge line as engraving to begin with and the potential clean up work would obviate the potential time saved. One would think though that a very accurate, very detailed pattern could be laid out.

  • @tommyw68

    @tommyw68

    A second question. If one were to want to add inlay to a blade itself, (I was contemplating some silver work on raindrop damascus - gold is a bit of a pricey way to learn) I assume that the engraving itself must be done prior to heat treating and then scale carefully removed with a burr from the engraving channel after tempering, and prior to the silver or gold inlay? I would think that you want to do the inlay in the hardened steel after tempering in order to help avoid fracturing or chipping any tiny dovetail edges on the hardened steel. Is it necessary to remove the scale from the engraved channel or would it be so minimal that it wound't affect the mechanical bond with the silver or gold inlay?
