    Whenever different metals are placed in a conductive liquid, such as salt water, you create a battery. If you connect these pieces of metal together, current will flow. This current, trying to equalize the conductivity of the metals, will be removing metal from one of the metal pieces. This removal is called "electrolysis". If the piece being removed is the zinc in your flashlight battery that is good, but if one of the pieces is your propeller it is bad.

    Literally any dock has electrical outlets that could over time become broken. RIP dude.

  • @BuckIckes
    @BuckIckes10 ай бұрын

    This is something that should never happen. The National Electric Code requires that there be GFCI (Ground Fault Circuit Interrupter) protection of the circuit feeding power to a boat dock. The instructions for GFCI breakers etc. say they should be tested once a month. Proper grounding and bonding coupled with GFCI protection are required for life safety. If you are not a certified electrician don't try to wire things yourself. Also if you are using an extension cord anywhere outside, make sure it is plugged into a (good working) GFCI receptacle. There is a test button on the GFCI receptacle and breaker, if you press the button and the power does not shut off to the load then get a new one properly installed and test it again. GFCI receptacles have a rest button on them and GFCI breakers require the handle to be pushed fully to the off position and then pushed back to the on position. Test, Test, Test everyone do it now, every boat dock with power, swimming pools, fountains, house, commercial buildings, and industrial buildings should have at least one GFCI protected receptacle/circuit. (Kitchens, bathrooms, exterior receptacles and other locations as required by the National Electric Code and/or local code)

    First thing, I thought! I have our pool circuit on a dedicated gfi breaker, and the outlets (only two) are gfi also! The electrician, said the only downside, to my ,belt and suspenders aproach, was troubleshooting, in the event of a problem, but with only two outlets to isolate, not that big of a deal. Side note, last year, testing one of the outlets, the outlet was on, but it could not be tripped by the reset. Now, that's on my pool start up sheet.

    @@deprofundis3293 It could have been wired incorrectly, but the article said, it was installed by a licensed electrician, but more likely, the GFI circuit, was not working. If a GFI circuit is working, and the person, makes contact, with current, and ground, the circuit shuts off in mili seconds, if it not working, the person, becomes part of the circuit. The faulty GFI outlet, that I wrote about in my situation, was not working, and could have resulted in a shock, that's why I test, my outdoor GFI's on pool startup.

    Okay, appears to be a rare (tragic) event but begs many questions, such as, "If the electrocutions are the result of electrical system deficiencies at the dock, what is the "fatal zone" surrounding the dock where swimming should be avoided?" I doubt the entire lake was electrically charged to a degree where it was life-threatening to enter the water.

    It would ground directly beneath the point of contact between the cable and the water(path of least resistance.) I live on a lake, and have a dock with electricity from the house. If you have some kind of multi meter, you can put one probe on a metal post on the dock, and put the other in the water. It will tell you if there is any voltage in the water. Should be zero. I have noticed that Hydro Hoist has gone to a different standard boat lift pump that is mounted vertically on a metal dock post, instead of the floor of the dock. They have to put some kind of isolator behind the mount to separate the pump from the metal post. Like a piece of trex decking or a piece of wood. Attach the pump to the isolator on the metal post, and problem solved. Anyone who lives on the water should be aware of this danger. Sadly, money doesn't buy brains. But you can rent them from a pro...

    They warned us in a Power Squadron boating safety course that this can happen and not to let your kids or anyone swim around docks. When I see boat leave their slips I often see the electrical wire left on the dock. If that falls in, whoever is in the water nearby will be electrocuted. Make sure to disconnect the electrical wire at the source, not just from the boat.

    At marinas, it is common for stray electricity to enter the water. The most common fault is the boat itself which is the direct conduit for electricity to the water

    Ok then how do you avoid this?? It's not like one can never go in the water near their boat. Everyone does. So WHEN exactly is it dangerous?? Just when the boat is turned on? Or...?

    This guy isn’t the sharpest tool. Not for lawn chairs or swimming? Buddy, anything in or around that lake must be considered exactly that. “Codes” are for that very reason. Anything in use or not that electrifies the water and also doesn’t throw a breaker to cut power is a no go. Someone is gonna have some real bad legal days ahead.

    That type of hazard is also what you call a human honey trap. Usually when the first person gets electrocuted, another will jump in , then another and sometimes another. I'd recommend as a non professional that you should put your finger in the water before jumping in. Maybe docks should have some type of affordable open circuit warning system. If we self police the problem the government won't make it a law to have a device on a dock to notify of charged water. Maybe companies could market a dock that was made for swimming also ,not just boating. The duel use docks could have an electric current detector for water around it.

    Listen, we locals don't swim here. The chicken plants in gainesville dump waste in the lake. Whether you believe the curse or not, the lake is disgusting and filthy. Rest in peace to this poor man and everyone else that has lost their lives. If any one reading this has had an inkling to visit this lake when visiting Georgia, just don't. This lake is not worth it. Visit Lake Rabun or Lake Burton. I'd say Lake Seed, but I found a body in there when I was a child, so do what you will with that information.
