24. Rigging an entire character

Фильм және анимация

In this series of 38 tutorials you will quickly learn all the basics of working with the software.
The tutorials are organized in seven sections and were designed to be easy to follow, clear and to the point.
Basic Interface
videos 1 to 4
In the first part, you will learn the overall interface, how the layer structures work, what is the logic of the timeline, how you can animate already created characters and how to export your animation.
Basic rigging with bitmaps
videos 5 to 12
In the second part, we will show you how to create a puppet from a Photoshop file. You will learn how to prepare the illustration, create a basic skeleton and even create distortion meshes and Smart Bones to animate expressions easily.
Basic Animation
videos 13 to 15
In the third part we will cover concepts about movement, how to use different keyframes types, why and how to use the graph and even create cycles of animation.
Vector Drawing
Videos 16 to 21
Once you know all the basics of working with images, we will move to the vector drawing tools coming with Moho. In this fourth section you will learn everything related to the drawing and filling tools, the basics of masking, the power of Liquid shapes and, finally, how to draw an entire character in Moho.
Rigging Vectors
videos 22 to 26
The fifth section will show you the difference between rigging vector and images, how to set up Smart bones for vector, rigging and entire character, creating Vitruvian bones and animating the vector character.
Animating Backgrounds
video 27
With all that done, in the sixth section we will move to set up our background. You will learn how to create parallax to give more depth to your scene, use the camera tools and even add automatic wind to your scene.
More tools in detail
videos 28 to 38
Finally, we will cover other tools that can be very useful for your characters and scenes, such as the different options of the timeline, controlled bones, the powerful particle system, frame-by-frame layers, automatic physics, scripts, actions, references, quad meshes, brushes and layer comps.

Never been this early to an upload, heck yee!! I'm so glad that y'all are putting together not just feature presentation videos but also character creation process videos for the *current* version.

Not to mention it was never described, why we have to seperate a character's hands from their arms and their legs from their body when designing a vector based character. It just appeared in this video, the character suddenly had those body parts seperated and thus your result looks different from mine and my rig keeps getting distorted

Don't get cute and try and give the actions an additional names. "right calf bend" will break the whole thing. Just go with the name it auto generates! However, if you did this you can still save the animation by just renaming the action to exactly match the bone name.

Yes! Smart actions are connected to the bones by their name. If you change the name of a bone, you will have to also change the name of the action (and vice-versa) to keep them connected.

Great tutorial! Can you please guide me on what should be the work flow if we want to have character urned 360 degree. Should we do it within the rig setup?

Great tutorial. THank you! I have a question why it's always frame 96 for smart actions?

The length of the action defines the "resolution" of the animation. The more frames you have, the more inbetweens the software will have to show while the smart bone is being used. There is no rigid rule for it, but 96 is a good number. It's a good amount of frames and the action is still fully visible on the timeline, so you avoid scrolling horizontally. If you create an action with, let's say, only 10 frames, the movement of the character will look cut, jumping from one frame to the other (You can do a quick test with a new action and will notice what we are talking about). Now, you can also take advantage of using less frames. For instance, for creating music equalizer bars that grow step by step without any inbetweens.

At min 15:00 It's evident that the feet are planted in the ground, but you will notice that if you move the hip bone upwards, the feet will no longer be planted on the ground. This video didn't show this important detail, but I was able to solve it even thought I didn't understand exactly why my method worked out. Feeling realy confused.

I think it should've been explained beforehand, how to make an actual simple rig for a character before getting into advanced things like this. I have seen the tutorial on rigging Copper, but it doesn't help when Copper's rig appaerantly isn't as advanced as Kusi. I'm getting no option to link her head to her head bone no matter what I do, not to mention, I don't understand why part 24 is centered around rigging and part 23 is centered around smart bones, when it obviously should be the other way around, since Kusi is completely rigged up in part 23, where as part 24 teaches you how to rig her up...

Can you make bones solid instead of just outlined? It`s hard to see them like this especially when they are upon background with the same color.

  • @mohoanimation

You can change the default color of the bones going to the Preferences -> Editor Colors -> Object. You can also assign specific colors to each bone by using the Select Bone tool and picking one of the available colors on the toolbar.
