He called Dodge City, Kansas his home. As law keeper of the wild west town, he dealt with some of the major problems that frontier life had to offer - namely, gunfights, outlaws, drunken brawls, cattle herding, and land disputes. To tackle these perils in stride, the job required him to have sound judgment and a whole lot of gusto.
There are so many factors that made Gunsmoke one of the premier western shows of its time. This video is going to take you behind-the-scenes to see just what made the show so great in the first place. You'll probably learn a whole bunch of previously unknown facts about the series and by the end of this video, we're guessing that you're going to have a whole new appreciation for the program.
Gunsmoke started off as a radio program called Gun Law - a series that on its own spanned nearly a decade - bu the television program it inspired would go on to wow audiences for 20 seasons. In fact, Gunsmoke was a very big reason for the popularization of western TV shows. By the end of the 1950s, there were more than 40 westerns on the air in primetime slots.
But, that shouldn't surprise you to learn. After all, Gunsmoke had an incredible cast, groundbreaking writing, and left behind a legacy worth talking about. 5 Emmy awards were awarded to the cast and crew of the series for their contributions, and for a while, Gunsmoke was the longest-running primetime TV series in history - can you guess who beat that record in 2018?

There IS no other show or Western than Gunsmoke. Matt, James Arness was the delight of the show. I loved every character. That's why Gunsmoke was such a success; it was personality-centered, not story-centered. Even if you put all of the Gunsmoke actors together in a spaceship going to the moon, it would still be great because Doc and Chester would be bantering back and forth over a knob on the control panel. Festus would be telling Doc and Chester what happened to a man he knows who messed with a zipper on his trousers, and off Festus would go telling how this man's friends had to literally burn the pants to get them off. Don't touch that knob! We don't want our pants burned off! Of course, in his wonderful accent-🤠 Matt and Kitty would be sitting down and having a beer together, quietly laughing at everyone else. Clint would be admiring the equipment used to replace any of the engines if he needed to reshoe them. There wouldn’t be any bad guys come in until they landed. You could write a hundred different stories, it wouldn’t matter what because Gunsmoke and all of the actors, are GUNSMOKE! ❤️

@@FactsVerse Thank you for your sentiment! I’m not sure that he ever picked a favorite episode; however, I do know that we both really liked the action (fighting) scenes especially when Matt clobbered the bad guy(s) and then told Chester to get a couple of guys to help him take the body away (or to the Doc’s office) as he walked away. That was so cool! We also liked the obvious fact that Ms. Kitty was so infatuated with her friend, Matt; however, he was so devoted to his work and responsibility that he just couldn’t permit himself the pleasure of responding to her as a typical man (despite having similar feelings towards her). That was so awesome!

For a while I was obsessed with Gunsmoke. There is one episode that I have never been able to watch. It is the episode that had his real life daughter Jennifer in. I'm wondering if it was taken off the air because of her suicide. Also not mentioned was the fact that you never see " Marshall Dillion " do a lot of walking or walking any distance. That's because when Mr. Arness was fighting for our country in the war he lost some toes. And sometimes it was painful. Also they say that in the beginning "Chester " would forget which leg he had to limp on sometimes. Another bit of information, it was said that when Glenn Strange was in the Frankenstein monsters make up he looked better then Borris Karloff and in one newspaper article about Karloffs death they used Glenn's image while in the monsters make up because it looked better.

Actually, Gunsmoke started as a radio drama before going on to a 30 minutes tv series which was broadcasted along with the radio. In other words both the radio and tv show were in production concurrently, but the radio drama came first. You left out the fact that James Arness suffered a permanent leg injury from wounds he received in WW2. He was hit multiple times by a German machinegun and this is why you rarely see him getting on or off a horse and even the rare scenes that you do it was usually a double filmed from a distance.

A truly enjoyable review, thanks! I loved both Bonanza and Gunsmoke. Also, I greatly enjoyed Gunsmoke on radio. As an Army Brat I listened to an episode every night on AFN radio (along with episodes of Our Miss Brooks, X minus one, Suspense, and many others). I still enjoy old time radio broadcasts.

When you watch those great old episodes you'll see quite a few actors and actresses who later became very well known, and in some cases became huge stars. Charles Bronson, Vic Morrow, Mike Connors, Dennis Hopper, the list is almost endless.

Loved the episode The Guitar. Shocked to instantly recognize Aaron Spelling. It was an early one. Years later, Bette Davis was in an episode...think Tom Skerritt was one of her sons in it.

While it is true that James Arness was in every episode of the series, during the final years Arness encouraged the writers to tailor the scripts more around Festus, Newly and Thad. As a result there are numerous episodes that feature Dillon only for about 2 minutes at the start of an episode and for about 2 minutes for the finale, leaving the supporting cast to carry the rest of the story. Arness was an avid flyer and took every opportunity to leave the set early and go have fun in his Cessna.

No love for Chester? I finally saw an episode in which Festus and Chester appeared together! I had no idea Festus was a relatively more serious character in his earliest appearances!

I totally agree. I loved Festus as a little girl watching this. He was a kind soul. There was one episode I still remember. He came across a kitten or a puppy, not sure which, but he said out loud, what are you doing here little fella? in his voice. I remember that to this day and always loved his kindness, such a loving soul.

@@moonwalker091000 Such tenderness. I love that. I doubt we’ll ever see a program of this caliber again. I love the cowboy theme, the strong sense of right and wrong, how they show a man can be strong and yet still tender at the same time, the sense of humor and sense of community, being fair to folks. There’s a reason this is the longest running show. 😊

I loved Bonanza but Gunsmoke was still the best Western ever made. Arness was the greatest Marshall ever played. I was young at the time of Gunsmoke and came to have a love for redheads because of the gorgeous Miss Kitty and Festus was the perfect sidekick. Gunsmoke and Mash were the 2 best tv shows ever created as far as I'm concerned.

I still watch Gunsmoke. I was a kid when I first seen it but now since I am an adult I understand the characters much better. I also listened to the radio program. Gunsmoke is my choice and Bonanza was number 2 against the other cowboy series.
