    Galveston Travel Tip: Take the Bolivar Ferry and see the City from the water for free! Stay to the right if approaching by car and follow signs for walk-ons. You can bypass the traffic and walk on with no wait. Ride across to Bolivar and then stay on the same boat to return. Great views of the island, ship traffic and lot's of dolphins. We do it every time.

    I am only commenting this because this means a lot to me and this bit of history has pretty much been forgotten. The pleasure pier is not historic, the hotel "The Flagship" used to be there. that was for the longest time after its construction the only hotel in the world over the water. It tragically partially collapsed during hurricane IKE, and then was bought out by Tillman Fertita who built the pleasure pier. Thanks for coming to visit us in Galveston, I enjoyed this video.

    I’m a 77 year old BOI and remember the historic pleasure pier well. It was built in the 1940’s as a recreational pier for the military during WW2. It was the venue for Miss Mellen’s dance recitals for many years and also for the presentation of the Jr MardiGras after WW2, which I was part of in 1948. It underwent many changes after that and after Hurricane Carla destroyed much of the island and the pier in 1961, the pier structure was restored and the Flagship hotel was built on it. In fact, I had my wedding reception in that hotel ball room in June 1968. Hurricane Ike destroyed the Flagship and much of the pier and the vision of Tillman Fertitta and Landry’s brought back the Pleasure Pier to its original intended purpose. I love my island home, no longer live there but visit as often as can. Enjoy!

    @@diane1270 I stand corrected. I only ever knew of the flagship hotel on that pier. I had no idea thier was anything before the flagship. Thank you diane for your beautiful story and lesson I will not soon forget. In this case the historic pleasure pier is correct and I thought i knew difderently. Thank you diane.

    😂 Barbacoa is not pulled pork, nor is it brisket. Barbacoa is beef cheek meat (and it is delicious!). Galveston is a great place. It is our home-away-from-home. It's a shame you missed Moody Gardens. It is incredible! I hope you enjoyed your stay! Thanks for the video!

    @travelfuller that's quite possible, but they should just sell it as a brisket omelet. 😁 There are so many great places to eat in Galveston, we overeat every time we're there! If you ever go back, try Gaidos, Katy's, Number 13 Steakhouse, Black Pearl...oh there's just too many to mention. Thank you again for the video!

    Galveston and it's beaches are a nice place. People love to take a big dump on Galveston and it's beaches, i.e., they're nasty, dirty, don't compare to California, Hawaii, Florida, etc, etc...or obviously not as pretty and cool as South Padre Island, but it's not that bad. Galveston beaches are not top tier, but they are not as shitty as people make them out to be. Galveston is a beautiful historical town, and the beaches are OK, nice enough. The breeze makes it cool, even in the summer months, much cooler than the rest of Texas.

    Great video ! My only question is how did you manage to fly your drone in those areas since they are restricted and DJI won’t allow flying near moody gardens and west of the pleasure pier. FAA says zero altitude allowed when I try to fly in those areas.

  • @travelfuller

    @travelfuller

    10 ай бұрын

    Thanks! That's weird, I have a DJI drone as well and had no problems. I checked AirMap before flying and the area was not restricted at the time but now it looks like it is. I think the small airport there used to be Class G airspace but is now Class D and requires FAA authorization

    A Barbacoa omelet has Barbacoa it in, not pork. In the U.S., barbacoa is often prepared with parts from the heads of cattle, such as the cheeks. In northern Mexico, it is also sometimes made from beef head, but more often it is prepared from goat meat (cabrito). If you want followers to trust you, make sure your information is correct, or stick to what you know, NY.

    This was a mistake, hence why we added the asterisk here 3:58. We know barbacoa is not traditionally brisket either, but that's taken straight from their menu: thesunflowerbakeryandcafe.com/breakfast-brunch-menu/

    The Flagship was built in 62 - 63 after Hurricane Carla. Before that it was the Coca Cola Pleasure Pier, built in 1948. So it is historic.

    Did you get the see the growing homeless population on the island? Maybe not, people like this only see themselves and others of comparable social and economical standing. Unfortunately, there will come a time when there are soo many homeless people because of "The Rules Of Society", they will be impossible not to see...
