I hope you enjoyed the Pajero and L200 story, and see where your contributions have gone!

renewal of lost imperial glory. plain old populist nationalism. a large majority of russians just want the glorious days back, where russia was a world power that dominated the east. If they loose 0.5% of the population as war casualties for that, thats a fair trade for them. Especcially as the fighting units are primarily comprised of non russian ethnicities and social outcasts, that are deemed "replaceable". Major casualties were taken by the non russian ethnicities from east of the ural and out of the caucasus region, but not the "ethnic imperial core" of russians.

For some reason, Russians seem to venerate despotic leaders (Stalin is practically worshipped in Russia; people still place flowers on his grave) while disliking or despising the more reformist ones. Tsar Alexander the Second tried to implement reforms. It was he who emancipated Russia's serfs, ending serfdom in Russia, and he also encouraged Finnish nationalism and autonomy (the Finns refer to him as "The Good Tsar". Even now, with everything that is happening, a statue of him still stands in Helsinki) The Russian people thanked him by murdering him. Gorbachev granted Glasnost and Perestroika to the people of the Soviet Union. And when the people of the other SSRs declared that they wanted to leave the USSR, he chose to let them go, instead of choosing to drown both Russia and Europe in blood by refusing and starting a war. And to this day, Russians sneer at him and call him weak; because he granted them freedoms and refused to throw away their lives. There was a poll a few years ago (I think 2020) in Russia, to determine who Russians see as their best leader. Stalin and Lenin made the Top 5. Catherine the Great - who in my opinion is the best leader that Russia has ever had - wasn't even included in the poll.

@@CMY187 Depolitisation of the population is the keyword. Russians society has an unspoken social contract: the government can do whatever it wants, aslong as it doesnt bother the "citizens" with it too much. Russians for the longest part of history, were just people that lived in a territory that was governed by a detached elite (Tsar, Dictator etc). They were actively depoliticised. Meaning, that political participation and integration was discouraged. This resulted in a population that does not really associate with politics, but with "historic identity". And here Putin comes into play, as he starts to repoliticise the population. But as fascists.

In previous combat operations, I (and many others) have questioned the courage or willingness to fight of the USA. The reason for this was rapid withdrawals when losses increased or were looming. Those are the tanks that matter, and they're useless if they can't get sufficient-quality optics (especially thermal/night-vision), targeting systems, comms, etc. And those are many of the very items that sanctions are making it impossible for Putin to acquire or manufacture. The stuff being brought-out of reserves is laughable. 50 years old, zero ERA or any other advancements, etc. A lot of it is just being used as civil-defense place-holders and/or terrible ad-hoc artillery, because that's all it's actually good for. And that's assuming it was actually properly stored and maintained in reserve, which we know wasn't even true for much of Putin's front-line forces. And that's without accounting for the fact that modern warfare requires highly-trained crews working in coordinated fashion. Russia's expert tankers are gone. Putin's conscripts get less and less training every day. Logistics continue to worsen. You can have all the tanks in the world, but without good crew, fuel, and ammo, they're just expensive paper-weights.

I'm sure that's true, but there doesn't seem to be much indication here of off-road munitions. These tanks, even the ones with mine-rollers, seem to be falling prey to mines beneath their own tracks, ie. exactly where the mine-roller should have eliminated them. So something seems to be going very wrong with Russian de-mining operations even without off-road mines.

In almost 2 years, Sucho hasn't gained any military strategy skills: Don't you see that the Russian Army has now totally encircled Novomykhailivka by strategically positioning its vehicles in advanced positions, hiding a huge amount of heavy weapons artillery and small arms in the mud, ready to be retrieved any day now, with a whole army of zombies ready to assemble their spread-out body parts and to rise from the Dead upon the call from their master? Typical Russian commanding officer strategy, sending wave after wave of soldiers on the same road that they perfectly know is being watched acutely by Ukrainian intelligence and artillery because each previous wave has been utterly annihilated. There are just a couple of excellent informative KZread channels reporting on the war in Ukraine, usually with a broader perspective, but I still think that @Suchomimus tops them off, even with a more limited but also more precise focus on field action, not trying to elaborate fancy hypotheses further away from what the facts tell us. The light caustic humor is also something we much need in this age of nonsensical violence.

Just a brief note: if vehicle group blue is headed north, as you say, then those moving, relative to the others in this group, 'to the left', are necessarily heading west, not east, as you said near the beginning (unless I heard that wrong). If facing north, west is always 90 deg to the left and east 90 deg to the right. In acronymic terms, 'w' and 'e' make for 'we'. Once embedded as a memory-trigger, you'll never get it wrong. Obviously the reverse is true, if facing south, but 'ew' is just too weirdly arb to remember. So, facing north, left arm held out horizontally at the shoulder, the same with the right, forms a line delineating west to the left and east to the right. Really helps when orienting in novel and broken terrain like mountains, or in dead flat large open spaces like deserts, or super-dense woods/undergrowth - or while orienting your subscribers on any given map. Thanks for the content and comment.

Ukraine should be provided with an airforce-quantity of fighter aircraft, such as F-16s and longer--range precision munitions, such as the ATACMS (more of them, and the longest-range variants should be provided), and the russian military facilities inside of russia should be considered legitimate targets. It is worth noting that support for military aid to Ukraine in America is over 80% and increasing. This is because Americans can see that not only is aiding Ukraine the ethical thing to do, it is the practical thing as well. America has spent only approximately 6% of our military budget so far to help Ukraine. However, over half of the russian army has been destroyed. This is a tremendous bargain by any measure! In addition to this, when russia is defeated in this war, their barbaric ideology of imperialism will also be defeated, making Europe a more peaceful, stable place for many generations - as well as preventing a new arms race in the region. That is why billions spent today saves trillions tomorrow. The vast majority of Americans understand this. Americans also want to see Ukrainian military and civilian casualties minimized. This is why Americans are correct to support giving military aid to Ukraine. Please write to your elected representatives to request this military aid. If you are a US citizen, please consider writing to President Biden and your other elected representatives, and demand Ukraine be given the above weapons - in war-winning quantities, and soon. The sooner we give Ukraine the weapons it needs to liberate all of its territory, the sooner this war will be over, and with fewer Ukrainian casualties. Letters can be submitted electronically via the Whitehouse website. One can also google for ones' elected representatives - many of which have similar websites. One may simply write and submit a letter electronically to make one''s desire known.

When you are defending what was a built-up settlement, there is no incentive to occupy the open ground over which the enemy has to advance. Whether Russia has actually now established itself permanently in the formerly Grey zone, or it if is still Grey but arguably, either slightly darker or lighter in colour is surely not a big deal? What matters surely is if Ukraine is driven out of any solid defensive position and whether what is then occupied by the Russians has enough structures still standing that it can constitute a strategically advantageous position for them to operate out of.
