73gr ELDM with 23.9 of TAC and 25.2 of AA2520 shot great in my 16 inch spr barrel. The AA2520 load shot a .39 inch 5 shot group and generally groups under .5. Lake city brass CCI 41 primers for each one. Love the channel.

So I have found this factory load to shoot a1/2" at 100 with my AR stoner 1-8 20" barrel so today because of your great videos I loaded my first 223 loads ever 22 grains of xbr to 2. 250 oal but I use CCI 450 primers and shot half inch group at a hundred yards 6 rounds extremely happy thanks for your great information!

This bullet with Varget gave me the best groups I’ve ever had from my 18” Lothar Walther upper. They also perform great with 23.5g of H4895. I picked up additional velocity and better SD compared to Varget and nearly just as accurate. With a better BC and much lower cost than the 77 SMK, they’re my new go-to bullet.

Hey Johnny, I had the same issue with the Hornady 73 and 75 grain ELD bullets. I have Hornady dies and by buying the ELD seater it worked great with the 73 gr. bullets but not the 75 gr. I had 500 of the 75 gr.eld and wanted to use in my LR AR magazines, because they shot great. I used the standard seater plug and carefully put JB weld in the seater, and very carefully took a 75 gr, coated with release agent and set it aligned parallel in the cavity. Once cured remove the 75 grainer and clean the seater, and it works great.

Disclaimer: This advice is probably more geared toward larger size magnum type powders. I have not tried it myself, but I hear putting a sonic type toothbrush (with a head you don't use anymore) against a powder filled case can help settle the powder down, so you can get a little less crunchiness when seating. Not sure how much it would help with the smaller sized grains of these types of powder though.

Great stuff JRB! I’ve seen that Hornady offers seating dies specifically for their ELD line so that is an option. As for a powder I’d like to see tested, how about Power Pro 2000-MR? That one was kicking ass in the cloning series. Maybe I should jump on the bandwagon and try toilet paper, haven’t really had a good enough reason to until now.

I revisited this video cause my very first loads are with this 73 gr projectile and IMR 8208XBR and I noticed you had the issue with the jacket being shaved. I am having the same issue, where as your shavings look almost like powder I am having it shave like its peeling it. I bought once fired already processed Lake City brass and even though it was processed I ran it through my RCBS small base die. I wonder if my issue is the same as you were having where the inside of the cases need to be chamfered better.

Trimming to min case length would give you a little more adjustibility before the crimp engages. Also the copper shavings may be because while the neck is being crimped the bullet is still moving downward into the case, shaving a little copper from the bullet.

I've watched a lot of your videos. I've been interested in your 300 Blackout and I'm now looking for information on Valkyrie 224. I personally really appreciate all the time and money you put into your videos. Ammo costs money, and you've got hours and hours of prep work along with the loading. Great job in my opinion. One of my thoughts has been, "After you've does such a great job of showing one round, or one specific load performs well, with the smallest group in your test, what happens if you load up another 5 or 10 of that same load, and see if it repeats the performance of the first test??" Are we sure, these groups don't just represent your varying skills on each group. You are a much better shot than me, so I'm just curious, does the test produce repeatable results for YOU! You also have proven to me.... an 8-inch barrel is amazingly accurate. I't like to see your comparison target with your best performing load for 16-inch barrel 300 blackout gun, and your best load for 8-inch barrel 300 AAC gun. You produce some amazingly small 100 yard groups with an 8 inch barrel. Good shooting for sure. Keep up the hard work.... I love it.

I'm not sure what the deal is with 8308xbr load data, but the go to load for a lot of competition shooters is 23.3 with the 75/77 grain rounds. I loaded LC brass up to 23.5 with the 73gn ELD and no issues in two different rifles but your mileage may vary. I wonder if there haven't been some hot batches so they keep the data low.

22.1gr of 8208 is a half-moa load in my AR with 73 ELDs. Unfortunately, it's pretty slow. You can go a lot faster, but it's barely sub-MOA. This is an 18" DD barrel. I'm also seeing some really good things with 8208 even with 80 ELDs. A bit over book though (more like what you're shooting in the Mk262 series) but at longer OALs than book.

Apparently they do wholesale distribution for brick and mortar stores in that region, and they don't do internet sales there so there's no competition with their wholesale customers. So, I guess your local gun stores might use Natchez as a supplier, and Natchez doesn't want to directly compete with them. Really sorry about that!

It's one from the MTM Universal Powder Funnel kit. It is a much better fit than a red Lee funnel, if that's what you're using now. They aren't exactly great funnels, but at least they're affordable. amzn.to/2zB65wm

Hey Johnny, just curious if you use a small base die or just a full length for your .223 work.

  • @JohnnysReloadingBench

I currently use a Redding small base die and bump the shoulder about 3 thousandths (measured with a Hornady case comparator). My small base setup works well, but I don't really see too many people complaining about AR function problems with standard size 223 dies.

Also, I've tested 400+ rounds of 73, 75, and 80 ELDs. ALL of them have shot best at longer jumps. I can't explain it. My rifle will allow all the way up to 2.52" OAL with 75s and 80s, and yet the best groups come at more like ~2.4 (1.85" CBTO)

@@Captain_Spaulding_01 yes, many times. Well, 600, but not over 600. A warm charge of powder and a bit longer throat in the gun and it'll perform surprisingly well. Shot my first "clean" at 600 with the 80 ELDm.

@@Captain_Spaulding_01 Depends on the rifle. In the AR I developed this load for, it was a Nato chamber and ended up about 65 thousands of jump. IN the bolt rifle with a custom long throat chamber, the OAL is longer, closer to 2.52" OAL.
