As someone who has been a percussionist all their life but has struggled to put a name to several of these rhythms, this is extremely helpful.

Absolutely right. I am not a sight drummer, but I have played almost all of these rhythms (not the waltz! For what, I've never played any waltz music?)

Love this, thank you. As a non-drummer, I assume the top line is the hi-hat rhythm, and the bottom ones on the staff are the snare?
@SightReadDrums

Yes the 'x' on top is hi-hat, notes in the second space from top are the snare, notes in the bottom space are the kick

What do the dots next to the notes mean, like on the triplet feel
@SightReadDrums
10 ай бұрын
A dot extends the duration of the note by half. In this case we’re in 12/8 time so the dotted quarter notes last for 3 eighth note beats.
👍👍👍👍👍👍🥁🥁🥁
Why is the triplet feel one in 12/8? Can you play it in 4/4?
@maness2112

Depend on how you count it.
@Lovelystevie

In 12/8 it's usually a Slow Blues In 4/4 it's commonly a Shuffle...
@SightReadDrums

It can be written in 4/4 as well. The 8th notes would be written as triplets in that case.

10 is called a One Drop. 16 is more New Jack Swing than funk.
@SuperMickyChow
3 ай бұрын
It's not even a good One Drop because the hats are too bland. Almost all one drops I've ever heard in over 30 years of listening to reggae have far more intricate and interesting hats. I don't know of any self-respecting reggae drummer who would play a one drop like on this video
@TheColdHarshTruth
3 ай бұрын
@@SuperMickyChow - Clearly you’ve not listened to a lot of reggae and dub across the full spectrum of both of those genres! 🤣 There are countless reggae and dub tunes with this exact stripped down one drop. A one drop isn’t defined by what’s going on with the hats, it’s defined by there being no kick or snare on the 1 and with a unison kick and snare on the 3. Hence the name “one drop” because the 1 has been dropped counter to to most western contemporary music.
@SuperMickyChow
3 ай бұрын
@TheColdHarshTruth I know the definition. And my vinyl collection has over 250 reggae and dub recordings ranging from 1968 to the late 90s, so I've got plenty thanks, smug arse
