Speculatively, we might allow that theoretical physics (and/or MAYBE quantum physics?!) can ultimately lead to instant chat across whatever distance the family is from the ship. Since no such miracle-tech was established, though, the Captain was my prime suspect to be the monster. 🙂

Best guess on the Mars display riddle was, yea, to do with the miniature copy. Looks like a an egg-shaped chair, though. So it was a question of if it's normal for this fixture to echo displays. If it's merely (mirrorly) a reflective surface, further questions follow. If it's flat, why do we seem to be looking at it parallel to the big-screen? If it's the concave shape it appears to be, why isn't the reflection distorted? The latter theory neatly explains why the writing isn't mirrored. Play around enough with faceted reflectors and you CAN get writing to look like it's forward in them.

Lessons from Dr. Who and MiB play in on the final riddle. Granted those humanoids look formidable to engage in unarmed melee. There's no definite sign of hostile intent, though. All things equal, might be worth attempting communication before entering any tunnels.

Josh is the monster if his duty station is less important than the sounds of a major disturbance. Unnamed Captain is the monster since his attention was on video messaging, and that made him easy prey. What's more, while video messaging across any distance in space is plausible, lowering the necessary transmission time is far less so. It stands out that the entity claiming the captaincy would call it "chat" unless they have instant, miracle-level tech. Phill is the creature pending interrogation on what specific exercises he claimed to be doing. For back pains, are they something a physical therapist would prescribe or counsel against? On the intended solution: I confess I didn't spot the two left hands. That would have been a pretty clear clue. Nonetheless they're drawn simply and with gloves on. Hopefully the woman-at-arms, there, scrutinized to be sure the man doesn't just have one hand turned backward. 👋🤗👋
