That also goes to demonstrate the issue aluminum knuckles have as far as the tie rod taper seating into the aluminum. That is my understanding that its common for the taper stud to loosen up due to how soft aluminum is and that they should be rechecked once in a while to make sure they are torqued up. Eric probably has some feedback on the whole issue since some vehicles have gone to aluminum knuckles.

Your awesome. Drove by the shop earlier. I was passing by the area and always wanted to see it so I drove by and saw you parking a white car on the street. Me and the wife waved from a black minivan passing by lol. Kinda surreal seeing you and the shop in person. Didn’t want to stop and bother you so just passed by.

I just wanna say Eric, I'm sure most of your subscribers will agree, we don't necessarily watch your videos to learn how, we watch because your content is interesting. Do we learn? Yes. Kids love sesame Street, and don't think about what they are learning, the content is just interesting, and entertaining. Mine went at 14 years and I dumped it as I didn't think it was worth spending $2500 fixing and another $1500 for new tires. Parts for the 05-07 GC are impossible to get. Mercedes sent spares for scrap after 10 years. My alternator was 1 of 3 left on the planet. It came from the USA, 2 were in Germany and it cost $1300 for a new factory Mercedes part. The Jeep was the most expensive car I've owned.

It's a great video. Life is a pain when you do this over and over. You are the best. Thank you for the wisdom. I live in Florida, my little pickup is a 1985 Datsun Nissan. I've been driving this thing 22 years. I only paid 1k dollars for it.I like to brag because most people with new cars don't have them that long. No, I don't have a life. Everybody else in the neighborhood got a new car. Being old and close to death, it really doesn't matter. That is heaven, cars that don't rust.

Mr. O's commentary is what drew me to his channel and keeps me. ❤❤

Can't wait for the folks who have never worked on a car in their lives to have a conniption fit over the brake grease application. I can't count the amount of times I have seen service info say "NEVER GREASE THE SLIDE PINS" and they inevitably come in squealing like a pig, with one pad worn clean down to the metal and the other at 5mm, even outside of the rust belt. Another great video Mr. O!

If that happens there is another reason and greasing the pins won't fix it. The pins are stainless so makes no odds if "rustbelt" or not. Can be seizing piston, rust between the bracket and the guide bush squeezing the bush onto the pin, or the pins weren't cleaned in 5 years.

I really can't believe you're not at 1 million subs yet, I think your channel is one of the most informative channels for most vehicle repairs because for most of us that work on vehicles aren't as lucky as Ray where just looking at a part that you need to remove and it falls off, you show us how you remove parts in the worst case scenario.

Thanks for refreshing my memory for brake jobs. I haven’t done one in a short minute but I know it’s not gonna be long til one of my 5 vehicles needs brakes. Luckily, I don’t have to deal with rust/corrosion like you do….

Must have watched you do 100 of these..basically in your sleep. I think that in itself is testament to your warning about buying new cars in the north east salt belt. I don't know how mechanics make a living in the rest of the country. I just did the brakes for the first time on my 2013 Taco. The pads were almost gone but the rotors were just fine. At 115k miles. ....and you make sure kitty is safe in the office before you back out of the garage! Good job dude.

I like when you go to the pick a part, you didn't go this time but I like watching the times you do.

Wow, a late model Jeep that still has wheel mounting studs instead of those dopey bolts. Makes mounting the wheel so much easier when you don't have a stud to hang it on!

Now now, I did that method on my 07 vette, the toe was 1/16 off, all I wanted was to be able to drive it to the shop but it actually worked really well. Oh my Gawd! everyone knows you have to have the cotter pin sideways and wrap around the bolt and tie it in the back!

Gotta love the quiet surroundings there at SMA.

I saw a mechanic leave the piston pusher thingy dangling one day when he took lunch break. But he came back a few minutes later and grabbed his super biggie size drink off the toolbox and then went to lunch. So it was all good.

That was my exact thoughts, every possible detail covered to ensure it will work as long as its able to before its a pile of rust again and also that the rotor will come off with a minimal struggle next go around.

@@truracer20 Basic but done right and attention to detail, it seems when I do a brake job on some vehicles ( have salt and the killer calcium chloride in Alberta in the area where I am ) I end up putting on reman calipers as they end up being junk as well more often than not.

I believe that is due to the idea of using aluminum for a knuckle, there is a lot of stress at the tie rod end and from what I hear tie rods are far more prone to loosening up in an aluminum knuckle and if not caught in time it will wallow out the taper hole and then its junk and have to have the knuckle changed. All in the name of lightening up the vehicle a bit, there is a negative side.

probably a factory issue, wasn't torqued correctly to start or they have some bad metal doing something funky, could also explain the accelerated wearing out. something sure is fishy there! I wonder if any have eaten the knuckle or sheared off while driving, maybe a near future recall, wrecks and lawsuit on coming.

@@throttlebottle5906 I never saved the info I had come across as per those aluminum knuckle issues of loosening up because of the stress the tapered hole in the aluminum was not able to withstand over its steel or cast counterpart knuckle. Off road you see is where the stresses go up, adding larger tires puts more stress on all components. I have seen video of more than one instance of the aluminum knuckle sustaining a catastrophic failure but this again was off road and being beat on with stress typically not seen on road. Take the Wranglers for example, they use the aluminum knuckle up to the standard Rubicon but with the optional package that includes larger tires yet they then swap to a stronger axle housing and yup, cast knuckles for that setup.

Love when you listen, then talk to your cat. They always have something to say, but most people don't take the time to learn to speak CAT. One of my cats doesn't talk much at all, and will sit by the water bowl and stare at me. This means there is dust on top of the water. She lays on my hand while I sleep, and will talk if she wants out of my room.

Hey Eric, love your channel. GM WCT here. Just a heads up, regarding your comment that pushing the piston in cannot damage the EBCM. Please review PIT5953 dated 10-05-2022. Pushing the pistons in with the M/C more than 1/2 full and the cap on the M/C can indeed damage the pressure sensor in the EBCM which will then require replacement of the unit. This will typically occur when doing a rear brake job on a 2018-2023 Equinox or Terrain. What typically happens is that when the scan tool is used to retract the pistons they do not retract completely due to the fluid level in the M/C being too high, the tech then pushes the pistons in manually, creating an overpressure condition and damaging the sensor. You will then find that you cannot do a parking brake relearn and a C0561 43 set in the EBCM. Now you are buying an EBCM for your customer. So on these vehicles, ALWAYS take the cap off the M/C before you retract the pistons. BTW, did you get the corrective safety glasses I sent you? Your eyes are getting old just like mine (mine are older than yours,) I love these things. I wear the +1.5 almost all the time and use the +2.5 when I am doing very close work. what dummy isn't bright enough to check the MC resorvoir and remove some, before making a mess, blowing it out all over the place or wrecking something. must be the wet behind the ears fellas with their shiny new certs and almost zero hands on time. 🤔 also, who designed that trash that can not vent when that happens?

Yep! As a 16 yr olds kid working on my 68 New Yorker, They sure tightened that side down!

i tip i learned from a heins manual one time for tie rod end is to use a paint marker to mark the end of the tie rod where it sits before removing the end

Lol, with the oddball Chysler stuff. I had a 1996 Jeep Cherokee, I had to buy a set of Torx sockets to do that. Glad I have them now but there was definitely a long time that I never used them

My dodge lugs bolts swelled up too out here in Commiefornia. Ended up just replacing them all with lug bolts without the chrome caps.

Eric has finally solved a mystery that has plagued me for years. A friend had a 4 door Jeep Wrangler. If the Jeep sat for a week or more, the brakes would intermittently drag. He would send the Jeep to the dealer and they would replace all the calipers, pads and rotors. Not recommending the use of lube on the slide pins or any other contact points would surely cause this condition to happen. The dealer never could solve the "death wobble" issue either. I never was a fan of Chrysler products. After my friend passed away his wife sold the Jeep to get it out of the yard.

Helicoiled a lot of them too. We still have them on the road down here in the south. Thanks Eric!

I just replaced all four brakes and rotors on a friends 2015 accord, then rear brakes and rotors on another friend's Odyssey the following weekend, then my wife called me today and said back brakes were making a roaring sound. Sure enough, my 2009 Odyssey rear brakes bad, slider pins all rusted, stuck out and boots popped out of caliber brackets. Fixed them tonight. Safe to say, I've had my fill of DIY brake jobs over the last few weeks. But I still love watching you do them. :)

97 Jeep Grand Cherokee love my car counted the rotations on the tie rod and use that method because I figured I would want to get new tires anyway. But, it's working fine. No extra wear.

In regards to weird stuff.. I have a 3/8" drive 11point socket for peterbuilt disc brakes I have used once..

Just did my first one of these today to discover the lovely 11 mm allen. Leave it to Chrysler to decide to use an allen head that doesn't come in any set....

I was rootin thru my tap,die and helicoil drawer the other day, found 9 mmx1.25 kit. Couldn't imagine why I had it. I remember now😂

0:28 I live in El Paso, TX, and rust is a foreign concept to me. The humidity is rarely above 50% here so rust is essentially impossible. I still have half-sized lug nut sockets because even out here, you get swollen nuts. If you do not own a set of half sized lug nut sockets, you should buy a set today, and thank yourself for doing it.

Back when I started to do brake work you could get caliper rebuild kits which included a dust seal and the square cut o-ring. Every time I would remove the pistons and clean the calipers out and reseal them. Some of them were really dirty and if I would have pushed that back in the reservoir it would have locked them up and wore the pad out in 3 months. I understand why they don't want grease on the brake parts. I use to grease things because the customer wanted them greased and a while later they would come in with it locked up with fine grit. The grease would hold the moisture and dust grit in the grease and then it would lock up. If I used carb cleaner on the same spot it would keep it clean and not lock up. I often thought of using a dry graphite as it would grease it but it would stay dry so it would not collect any dust.

My truck is a 1983 Chevy S-10 parts wear out, they don't 'rust" down here in the south. Gave $500 dollars for it doesn't use any oil runs really good for it's age. I have had to replace the rear axle, old one simply wore out, replaced the front steering rods, again just worn out. Shocks worn out. I used to do all my own work on it since its so easy to work on , no electronics! The local shop that does the work for me now actually like working on it since it's "old school"

As much as I love my air tools, with the cordless trend I'm using mine less often, mainly for the air hammer. Then this summer I had to break some rock to lay foundations for a new deck, so I picked up an SDS+ drill to drill a series of granite holes to create a cleavage plane in the rock. To my surprise those things have an air hammer setting, and they work pretty well, without the expense of a long stroke air hammer. Even the bits are less expensive.
