"21 Chump Street" - Performed by. Monticello High School Drama

"21 CHUMP STREET" is a story of love, decisions, mistakes and consequences.
This is a tale based on a true story as reported in WBEZ's series 'This American Life'. "21 CHUMP STREET" is an important recall of a high school honors student who falls in love with a beautiful transfer student from New York. Although he's never done this before, and has no idea what he's doing, he goes to great lengths to oblige her request for marijuana in hopes of winning her heart - only to find out that his crush is actually an undercover police officer working to catch drug dealers in schools.
Monticello High School Drama in Albemarle County, near Charlottesville, Virginia, performs this musical by Lin-
Manuel Miranda, and uses it as a teaching tool to inform teenage students whom can learn so much from this story.

_ExpoEdits_ Yes, but they don't get an excuse out of some good criticism just because they're high schoolers. They'll never improve if they refuse to be open to criticism. I've seen another high school remake of this, and it was better. There could've been a lot of improvement on this, but it wasn't terrible. I agree with the original commenter here.

Justin: 10/10 Vocals where fantastic! On point! If I only heard the voice, I would think it was Anthony. Great job! Lin: 8/10 pretty much the female version of Lin, vocals where a tiny bit off, but overall good job! Naomi: 7/10 I feel like she didn't entirely understand who she was playing, but the vocals where ok. The tunes where a off at certain parts. Background dancers: 8/10 Great! None of them tried to steal the spotlight (I've seen some school shows where that happens). Not entirely synchronized at all parts, but I don't blame you! Many Broadway shows even struggle with that. Overall: 8/10! (Kinda sad no one laughed too much, :0 ) this was amazing for a school performance! Get you actor for Justin on broadway, please!

as a person who does theatre, i think it's more the fault of whoever was helping her with understanding her character than her own. people can only embody a character they relate to, and i feel there was some sort of disconnect between her and the character she played. of course, people are going to comment on it. they could be kinder with their words, but they're still going to remark that maybe her performance has stuff to be gained. (lovely voice though.)

The guy playing Justin killed my favorite musical. It says most of his lyrics like a line, and the ensemble is taking Justin's lyrics, and his voice cracks.

i liked this, but i had a few key issues with it. -the ensemble was huge, and comprised of mostly women!! i get that it's hard to get teenage guys into theatre or whatever, societal expectations and all that jazz, but this is a high school; there have to be more than three guys who can carry a pitch and are willing to sing. the only reason i say this is because the part of the ensemble isn't made for such a huge group, and the part is low, because it's written for lower vocal ranges. a lot of the times, in the ensemble parts that were supposed to be powerful, (e.g. "justin, say goodbye to college, they got you") the ensemble was either speaking the line, or ghosting over the note, and that sorta created a sucker punch for the weight of the statement. -another thing about the ensemble: i get that it was big, and y'all probably just wanted everybody to get time to sing, but there is plenty of ensemble action up in these parts. best course of action would be to split the people into three main groups, soprano, alto/tenor, and baritone/bass, so that their vocal ranges could be accommodated for, and maybe the harmonies wouldn't have been messy at some parts. anyway, one of the biggest things that bothered me about this was when some ensemble members would sing along with justin during a part that was supposed to be single, like in the "who the heck i gotta be, for you to be with me?" of what the heck i gotta do, or the "love" bit of cousin. y'know? those parts are powerful specifically because justin is singing by himself, and it gives the actor a place to show off his vocals. when the ensemble would sing along in those parts, not only would it take away from the feel as a whole, but they didn't do much blending, and they all overpowered justin to the point where i barely heard him at all :/ -i adored this justin!! the only note i have here is that he probably sings a lot lower than anthony ramos and a lot of his higher notes sounded kinda strangled. nothing he can do there, and i feel that, y'know, it's hard to hit notes outside of your belt, in your belt. this man requires some HEADVOICE. tasty stuff. can be acquired via training. he's a talented guy, y'all should make it happen for him. -there were several things about the naomi that really got my goat. i mean, don't get me wrong, her pitch was on point, which is good for just about any character. she had good tone, and she was always in tune. what bothered me though was the way she embodied naomi's character. all her lines felt forced, like she was just reading a script. that's not what i look for; naomi's character has some *heavy* emotions going on here, and y'all gotta take care to emphasise it. even on the lines that should've invoked emotion, like the bits about her childhood with drugs, or the lines that should've been funny ("let's just say... i drink at the end of the day") felt like dry reading. i don't think she really got a chance to empathise and feel for that character the way all actors should for the parts they play. i don't think she's a bad actress, i just don't think she was able to embody that role. also, she had a lack of vibrato or any vocal inflexion that sorta grated while i was listening. vocal control, girl!!! it's crunchy. she is a talent, and must be given access to places where she can learn to control her voice better, because throwing in some tasty vibrato would make it very, very lovely. she has a really clear voice that i enjoyed hearing. the lack of vocal control just grated a lil. -a couple others also had the "dry reading" problem, on some of the funnier lines ("aw, little justin is crushing!") and that made it a little hard to enjoy some of the things that make this musical fundamentally good. i'm not, by any means, saying that y'all aren't a talented group! the ensemble harmonised well and some of the choreography (e.g. the end of the musical, where the ensemble all had their heads down, until the very end when they lifted them up) touched my heart very especially. there was some top tier shit. there are just specific parts that bugged me, and of course this is just my (relatively) untrained opinion that nobody has to listen to whatsoever. i enjoyed your guys' rendition of this musical, and wish you all luck in the future :)!!

I really like this, however there is to much backround voices and it's a little bit crowded plus Justin should dance when he's singing "what the hek I gotta do to be with you" but it's still amazing because I know these kids put a lot of effort and time into it!
