2025 Land Cruiser First Look - The Legend is Back!

2025 Land Cruiser First Look - The Legend is Back!
Reviving iconic names in the auto industry isn't uncommon, and Toyota is wasting no time bringing back the Land Cruiser after its recent discontinuation in the U.S. However, the new Land Cruiser expected to hit American shores soon will likely be quite different from its predecessor.
While the global market may receive the 300-series Land Cruiser, U.S. consumers are likely to get a different version. The luxurious off-roader segment might still be dominated by the Lexus LX, which shares its platform with the 300-series Land Cruiser. Given that Toyota already has the bulky Sequoia SUV, introducing a similarly sized Land Cruiser wouldn't make much sense. Instead, attention is turning towards the 2024 Lexus GX as the potential base for the revived Land Cruiser in the U.S.
Downsizing the Land Cruiser could actually improve its off-road capabilities, with the GX serving as the foundation. This move would make the U.S. Land Cruiser slightly smaller than before. In the past, the Lexus GX was the upscale counterpart of the Toyota Land Cruiser Prado, a smaller variant not available in the U.S. It's speculated that Toyota might drop the Prado badge and market the vehicle simply as the Land Cruiser.
The new Land Cruiser is expected to have a lower starting price compared to the Lexus GX, possibly achieved through some equipment reduction. However, off-road features from the GX's Overtrail trim, like chunky tires and locking differentials, could make their way into a Land Cruiser TRD Pro trim level.
Powertrains for the Land Cruiser might mirror those of the GX, potentially featuring a twin-turbo 3.4-liter V-6 with around 349 horsepower and 479 pound-feet of torque, along with a hybrid variant in the future. The turbocharged 2.4-liter inline-four from the new Tacoma could be reserved for a future 4Runner replacement.
Repositioning the Land Cruiser could also impact the 4Runner, possibly leading to a smaller, more off-road-focused model to compete with the Ford Bronco and Jeep Wrangler. With the GX and the new Land Cruiser likely offering third-row seating, the next-generation 4Runner could also become more compact and drop its optional third row.
While the Land Cruiser Prado's makeover isn't expected until 2024, these potential changes could have ripple effects across Toyota's lineup, reshaping its SUV offerings for the U.S. market.
