@@sirlepauthis year at the Paris Olympic, they allow every team to have ONE (1) “official alternate” players on the roster to come in only when a player is injured and can not continue. Official alternate player for TeamUSA for Paris Olympic is Kyle Ensing 6’7 opposite. He was on the Tokyo Olympic roster as well.

@@sirlepau The problem is assuming Matt isn't in his element for whatever reason, the only option is to put an outside hitter in the opposite position.

Where's the announcement? This video was made for people already familiar with these athletes. No captions or voice over to describe who we're seeing.

This was after the announcement. They didn't really show the announcement one by one maybe privately but they did show the final roster in other social media platforms.

@@wk-ys4gt More like 2 for sure, Anderson and Smith or Holt. The others are still in their late 20s, early 30s .

I don’t understand how they made a roster without going through a bit of the VNL first. This is the same core group and I would have loved to see someone else break through. I was hoping they’d do two opposites and Gabi could sneak in the mix. Hope the choice to settle so soon doesn’t hurt us in the long run.

I think Speraw and his team know what they are doing. It's NOT their first time around the block. They know the landscape, the limitations, the potential of their players. This is good--and the players will also be able to pace themselves well through the VNL, knowing they are assured of places at the Paris 2024 table.

@@mylesgarcia4625 All true, but my point was about the timing. I wish they would have waited. Like I said this is the same core group and I’m sure everyone could’ve predicted the exact same 12 players, but it would be more exciting to see a couple of the younger players sneak in. Sure they are unproven, but the VNL would have been that opportunity. I love this group, but they’ve had such mixed results. I didn’t want to wait until 2028 to see some variation.

@@D1R735 Well, there are 3 NEW players (+ Ensing as the alternate). And up against the other leading teams (Brazil, Poland, France, Italy, Argentina), I think you will find that it's about the same spread/mix of repeats, newcomers, yrs of experience, etc. (so long as they are healthy)--player for player. It is what it is.

I don't really understand what alternate means? Can you change your line up before a match? I thought it's 12 people max and you have to stick with those 12 for the whole competition.

@@Lucalaurin The Olympic rules for indoor volleyball loosened up a bit in that the teams can name and TAKE an "alternate" or a spare player who will be held in reserve should major injury happen to one of the original 12. The "spare/alternate" does NOT stay in the Olympic Village. S/he stays in the hotel with the other team officials. If s/he is called to duty, then the "alternate" may move into the OV, replacing the badly injured player in the line-up. Is that easy enough to understand? Just like in the Rhythmic Gymnastics and Artistic Swimming teams, those have an "alternate" athlete waiting in the wings should anything happen to the original line-up.

It looks like they thought it makes more sense to go with an extra MB/OH. Anderson is in quite good shape still and he said he will retire after Paris so I'm guessing he wants as much play time as possible.

@@Lucalaurin Plus, either Micah Ma'a (who was a setter and also OPP at UCLA) or TJ DeFalco could step in at OPP. TJ definitely hits with the kind of heat, and smarts, you need from an opposite.

Team USA has the same roster for about 3 consecutive Olympics now. I see the same guys all the time.
