2024 Toyota 4Runner: The Final Year of the 5th-Gen | MotorWeek Road Test

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

You know, a lot has changed over the four decades that the Toyota 4Runner has been backwoods exploring and pavement prowling. Most notably, the rise of car-based crossover utilities and the word “softroader” somehow becoming a thing. Well, the 4Runner is still all truck and definitely not soft, but you don’t have to be an off-road pro to enjoy it!
With a new 4Runner on the horizon, we put the final year of the 5th-gen to the test!

I picked up a 24 TRD Off Road Premium back in February. With what Toyota has done with the GX, Tacoma, Sequoia, and Tundra, I knew they were going to ruin the 4Runner too. Sure enough, I was right once they revealed the 6th gen in April. My 5th gen will easily reach 400k miles and last 20+ years, meanwhile all the other vehicles above will barely make it to 200k without a major turbo, hybrid battery, or engine replacement. RIP reliable, long lasting, dependable Toyotas.

I have a '23 Offroad Premium myself. I love it, it's the sweet spot in the trim lineup, many thousands cheaper than the too-pricy Pro. That said, I'm not inherently afraid of the upcoming model. I wouldn't buy one the first model year, but I doubt I'll be saying "those turbos are going to ruin your life!" in 2028.

I added the TRD Pro intake and exhaust. Sounds great. Old School for sure. I get about 17.5 MPG in all around driving. Not too bad as far as I am concerned. Super reliable. In response to a comment below, I am 5'11", I have plenty of headroom. Seats are comfortable. Tons of room for Gear in the back. Headed to NC in a few weeks to camp and section hike part of the AT. Super steep climbing out of the Nantahala Gorge no matter if going north or south.

I bought a 2024 4Runner off road. It’s my first ever Toyota and a decent vehicle. It’s decent off road. I have generally enjoyed the car and only have two complaints. First, the stock tires are terrible for off road use and need to be replaced almost immediately. Second, the brakes on this car are not good, they do not modulate well and it’s easy to get the car into a modestly uncontrolled skid.
