2024 Toyota 4Runner in Underground: Facing Extinction, or in its Prime?

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

The 5th gen 4Runner has now been out for 14 years and has mostly remained unchanged. Is this legend ready to go extinct and replaced with new technology?

    I am probably buying a 2024 4Runner precisely because of its old school nature and reliability. I hope to keep it for 20+ years. The only other new option I’m considering is the Honda Passport (Pilot is too big for me) which is still sporting a naturally aspirated V6. The 4Runner is the leading option for me despite my owning 6 different Honda products over the years. Why? I believe the 4Runner will have more long term reliability, it looks better than the Passport and it is still built in Japan at one of the best production plants in the world.

    @@mikelaughlin270 I'm looking at TRD Off Road Premium. TRD Pro is way overkill for what I'll be doing and goes for ridiculous dealer markups around here (Southern California). Realistically I could live with an SR5 RWD but I really prefer having 4WD in my pocket plus I want KDSS. Against that the price difference at the moment between SR5 RWD and TRD Off Road is like $12,000 because dealers want to move their 2023 SR5's. Since I plan to keep it for a long, long time $12,000 isn't that much over 20 years to get what I'd prefer. And my wife wants the heated seats of the Premium trims....

    @@erickisel8668 If Honda still had a V6 Accord with an 8 or 9 speed automatic I'd probably have bought that. Or since I'm dreaming an Accord V6 wagon that didn't look like the Crosstour. But those days are gone and if I want a Japanese non-turbo V6 it is 4Runner, Passport or Pilot. I'll still have a Honda though because I have a 2001 CR-V with just a bit over 100,000 miles as my beater.

    I bought a '23 Limited back in September for all of the reasons so many others here have said. I plan to keep this truck until I can no longer drive ( I will turn 60 in February) and I know it will make it till then no doubt. I had heard that the next gen of 4Runner was going to have way to much modern vehicle tech which I don't want. My wife had a '12 BMW X5 that after it turned 65k miles became a maintenance nightmare so we bought a 4Runner to get back to basics.

    As the original owner of a 2008 SR5 RWD 4Runner I can say that it has been the best vehicle I have ever owned. After over 15 years it has been flawless, with no problems at all (oil changes and tires the only things I changed). I hope the next version of the 4Runner continues this level of reliability and simple design.

    I bought a brand new ‘23 TRD Off-Road Premium November 30. This vehicle is perfect and why I chose it over every other vehicle on the planet. Didn’t want to wait and get stuck with a turbo or redesigned body for 2025.

  • @T18skyguy

    @T18skyguy

    So true. All a turbo does is make a smaller engine work harder and wears it out sooner. I've replaced tons of turbo's in aircraft cause they run extremely hot and are very expensive to replace. Then you have the mess of all the up pipes and intercooler pipes that can develop leaks. A leak in an intercooler pipe can over speed the turbo and ruin it. I'll take more displacement over a turbo any day.

Good luck with your decision. I’m lucky and purchasing a new vehicle works for me at this stage of my life. This will be the last new vehicle I will ever own. So with an upgrade to a 2024 4Runner, I get more tech than I have ever had with an engine I know will last me more than a two decades, which is how long I intend to have it. The cost of the 4Runner could definitely land me in a high-end Palisade or Telluride, but with the amount of tech they have, theres not as much option to DIY and things can and will break. 4Runner represents a very small market and considered it a very last priority by Japan. Its so small that they were going to actually pull out of the north American market just like they did with the FJ. Somehow, Toyota North America convinced its main HQ in Japan to keep the 4Runner in production. They were going to redesign the 4Runner back in 2017 but pushed it back to 2020, 2022, 2024 because they were prioritizing other models sold worldwide like the Hilux, Land Cruiser, Prado, Hiace etc. In a way, I kinda like it because it's simple, reliable and solid. We have two 5.7 V8 Tundras and two 4Runners. Now my brother is in the market for a 4Runner. We love our Toyotas. Designed to last at least 250k mi compared to other domestic manufacturers of only 150k mi. No fuss, no drama.

    Have a source on that first bit of info? That's interesting. I knew that they didn't need to prioritize any updates for the 4runner and figured it was always going to be the last on the list as 4runner buyers just keep coming back for em.

    Bryan, Quality never goes out of style. Let's not write off the 4.0 V6 4Runner just yet as 'reports of its demise have been exaggerated' for several years. I know you don't want your Comment Section to be plagued with conspiracy theories but for some time I have been suspicious that rumors of a new 4Runner were started by Toyota themselves to encourage panic buying and hoarding of V6 models. 😉😉🤣😂 On a serious note, Toyota USA has hinted that the next 4Runner will be going back to its roots. Does that mean a 2 door, 4 cylinder, manual 4Runner like we first saw in 1984 is on its way back? 🤔 Speakings of rumors and hints, what about the affordable mini Land Cruiser FJ Toyota has in the works? That one is predicted to be a body-on-frame 4X4 roughly the size of a Corolla Cross akin to Suzuki Sidekicks and Chevy Trackers of the 1990s. The next year will be very exciting for fans of Toyota 4x4s. 🤞🤞

    We have a 2014 4Runner Trail. We could park it right next to this 2024 and it would look virtually the same. I get the apple car play radar cruise and some minor safety upgrades are new but like you said the drivetrain hasn't changed much. We have lifted ours, have larger tires, 150K miles but the 14-15 MPG stinks. It is great off road and super reliable, but it is sorely in need of an upgrade. Was hoping the 23 0r 24 would be the 6th gen. Seems like finally it will be the 25 model year. The new Land Cruiser does look like a good option as well. Need to wait at least until the second year of production to get the teething problems fixed. We aren't in a huge hurry, but want to get the 6th gen. We already have a 2023 Rav4 hybrid Limited and it is great. It's our 3rd hybrid and we are sold. I know the "old" one is reliable. Toyota has been doing hybrids and turbo's for decades and know how to make them live. Guess we will see...

    Toyota is making a big mistake only selling turbos! I will never buy a car/truck with a turbo evereyone knows they don't last as long as a naturally aspirated engine and will need to be replaced at some point. I keep my cars so getting 300,000+ miles trouble free out of them matters to me these new turbos will never see that many miles without repairs. I bought a 2023 4 runner early this year because of it also bought a v8 Tundra last year. Whats more funny is the new turbo engines are no better on gas than the previous models besides you don't buy a suv/truck for MPG. Talk with your wallets don't buy them! The V6 camary is going away to the corolla does not have a turbo yet, i plan to buy a corolla as a daily driver soon. Also still rocking my 1997 Tacoma! zero reapir bills on it besides regular maintenance, these will last me another 20 years hopefully by then there are better options.

  • @gib3ll1n

    These are so sweet but the math just doesn’t math. The only way people are justifying this price is by citing reliability. No doubt this is a tried and true tank. In no way is it actually worth say 52k for a TRD Pro. Add in loan interest and the atrocious fuel economy and you easily come out ahead on the maintenance cost on even a used BMW over 20 years. I still want this over a german luxury car, just realize reliability only equals saving $$ to a certain point and 4runner msrp blows right past that point.
