    The Ascent seems to have better visibility for the driver and front passenger. I was impressed with the views while driving, but especially at a stop sign or traffic light. We just bought a green one today onyx trim. I really like the Toyotas and the Honda Pilots too. This seemed to give you more for less money. The ride and steering are really impressive. We usually buy Hondas.

    Great review, much appreciated. But I wonder why you're against the Onyx Limited. You mentioned the only *real* features that are different between the Onyx and the Onyx Limited are the sound system, 2nd row heated seats, and 360 camera....but you're also adding in: - dual function X mode - overhead camera - memory seats - memory mirrors - passenger power seat - DriverFocus Distraction Mitigation System - 3rd row USB chargers - heated steering wheel - cabin connect - 2nd row sun shades. Now of course not all of these are worth the added price for the limited but I can make a serious argument that for an extra $4-5K you're really getting a great deal.

    Picking up our new 2024 premium 8 seater this week. I agree that its not the class leader in most categories. We really wanted the Toyota Grand Highlander or a Kia Telluride, but we would need to pay so much more, that we decided that we couldn't pass up the value of the Subaru. Its a solid car and I like the brand and the dealer we worked with was great, not taking customers for granted. Good luck to everyone making a decision on a new car, there are many good options now and prices on some are finally coming back to earth.

Some models in this 3 row midsize SUV segment from non-luxury brands offer adaptive suspension and even adaptive air suspension to make them ride like luxury cars. Those same models also seem to get remarks about being very quiet, and handling well.

    I am a bit taller (6'2") and sit up higher in the drivers seat.. I have been in a few late model SUV's/crossovers.. The two problems l have noticed.. Rooflines are getting lower and lower.. Making cabins cramped and less of the nice airy cabins - and hampering outward visibility. And another problem is the safety monitoring equipment above and around the rear view mirror (on the windshield).. This area is important visibility for mid-sized and taller drivers (see 6:40). I think that the driver's own outward visibility is much more important to safe driving than the safety monitoring devices that are now actually blocking the drivers own outward visibility.

  • @Erdie5

    One thing I've done with every car now, is usually there's an articulation arm on the rear view mirror. I'll basically flip the thing around so the rear view mirror is as high as possible. Some cars the way they come from the factory, the rear view mirror is nearly in the center of the windshield and it makes seeing to the right almost impossible. Not sure why they're doing this.

  • @howlingwolf125y

    @howlingwolf125y

    @@Erdie5 Thanks for the suggestion. I will check into what you mentioned. That whole center top part of the windshield is super important for visibility so you can drive safely- if you are semi-taller The rearview mirror gets in the way for me and now they are putting all that safety monitor equipment (and cameras) there too.. That safety equipment actually hurts some of the visibility out of the front windshield for the driver (and passengers). Hopefully the auto companies will find another place to put those safety devices.

    @@Natedoc808 It’s not about bragging, it’s about key features and benefits of the brand that makes them “almost unique”. People always talks about how reliable the Toyota brand is, (which is very true). I personally stop buying that brand because of their seat comfort. I had a 2016 & 2021 Camry hybrid and just couldn’t stand driving them for long distances. My best friend have a 2021 Toyota Venza hybrid and my son drives a 2022 RAV4, still the same happened when I got into one of those. I am on my 4th Subaru and and I can assure you that the Subaru seats comfort is much better. So there you go is not only about the Subaru AWD systems.

    Gonna be honest. I was looking at SUVs. Been checking all models from all companies, literally. Then my friend recommended to try Ascent. I instantly loved the look. I do drive a STI, and I would completely trust Subaru's AWD system and boxer. But all that hype was there until I heard "CVT". That is a game breaker for me. I am not going to consider CVT whatsoever. I was worried this may have CVT as Subaru is now slapping CVT on WRX now. Sad. Gonna go check out Mazda Cx90 again as Mazda offer true automatic trans. Subaru made a very wrong choice to go with their amazing AWD and its boxer.

    We just purchased the new 2024 Subaru Ascent Onyx Edition. Honestly for what comes with it, is actually a really good deal. Keep in mind this edition comes with all wheel drive, the top roof rails and a panoramic moonroof. I know that subaru comes standard with some of these features but it really does make a difference if you like to go and do outdoor activities. In order to get these features for the other SUVs you are looking at $50,000. Personally I do not need all the bells and whistles. I would rather pay $40,000 and save myself some money. If you have money to blow then yeah go with the other SUVs.

    @@double_baconCVT is a type of transmission; a transmission joins the engine to the wheels. Typical car use automatic transmissions which have gears that’s shift automatically. However a CVT is a belt driven transmission that changes the ratio of the input and output as it runs. CVT is smoother than automatic because CVT can slowly and constantly upshift, but it is known for the belt to slip and break. Gears are much stronger than belts, that’s why people don’t like CVTs. But CVTs get better gas mileage and are cheaper to make so manufacturers continue to use them.

    This is the only Subaru SUV car that is left behind compare its competitors….exterior design is outdated and boring…the interior is just ok…nothing to be amazed with….

    I generally agree. Outside is boring and inside is OK. I like the new Honda pilot and Kia Teluride more but I bought a 2023 Ascent because it was $6-7k cheaper. For me the Ascent is the better deal.
